I got into album-wise with-of all things; the much-dissed 'Street Angel' album which I found rather fine. This CD came next & this album was more of a grower, but this song stood out from the start. PopCulture20 surprises me-'Can't Wait' is a great single, 'Has Anyone' is nice but not special single-wise. But 'Rock A little Lily' wasn't a single! For a popular US singer, it's weird Stevie only gets 3 off an album, 2 if the album's deemed a flop like 'SAngel'. But 4 from overrated 'Bella Donna'.
@TheMjblades "Street Angel" is a great starting point for Stevie. I can't understand why that album doesn't get the respect it deserves. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with it at first, but now it's right up there in the top tier of Stevie releases. "Kick It" is superb.
But I'll always gravitate back to "Rock a Little" as a Stevie album that strikes a perfect chord with me, song after song.
@RecordWarped I think it's always in to diss one release from a respected & usually acclaimed artist so they choose this one. Yet while 'TOSOTMirror' is my all round fave, it was her most removed from earth to land of fairies CD-'Street Angel' returned to earth but was still very much her. Intriguingly enough, a dozen or so tracks from it were actually first conceived from your fave's era-'Rock A Little'-All her CDs were cool until the latest. 'SA' though is such an endurer.
I love her powerful vocals as well (can anyone say Edge of Seventeen?), but a song like this is SO eighties, and just balances her musical selection so perfectly...
I agree because ''I Can't Wait'' & ''Talk To Me'' were HORRIBLE CHOICES for singles but ''Rock A Little'' & ''Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You'' were good choices despite failing to chart higher
@PopCulture20 - I liked both of those singles. Although the one time she did "I Can't Wait" on stage, it was a complete and utter disaster. "Talk to Me," though not written by Stevie, is a great song. I really like what she did with it.
@nwlman I prefer Bella Donna but The Wild Heart and Rock A Little are great too. And so are The Other Side Of The Mirror and Trouble in Shangri-La. Street Angel is only very good since I don't like the song Jane, the only song of these six albums I don't like.
Brilliant!! What Stevie Nicks song isn't she's a true legend. I love you Stevie you are a true inspiration.Loving the new album in 10yrs your a trooper xx
@SirTrews34 I never understood why radio DJ's aren't allowed to play any track from an album because it looks to me like if they were allowed to that, it would increase the sales of an album by an artist.
I clearly recall hearing this track for the first time at uni...suffice to say I went out and bought the CD immediately after class and played it repeatedly for months on end. I STILL play this disc which is such a rarity for me these days given how the advent of electronic MP3 formats have all but undermined the value of listening to an entire album, as the artist intended.
Indeed, this IS POP PERFECTION...lyrically, musically, vocally...a rotten shame this wasn't a single.
Ok, hearing this song has made up my mind to go and buy the CD! Thanks so much for sharing. Stevie is a true classic and one of the most talented singers/song writers of ALL TIME.
i'm now almost 40 and regret that i'm a bit too young to have fully appreciated stevie nicks at her height. i discovered this album when i was finding myself and my taste in music in the 80s. a total classic. unique vocals and fantastic lyrics.
@Cicilo1983 Hello, Cicilo! This song has "hit single" written all over it! I'm surprised it wasn't released as one. Such a great song with real beauty and catchy hooks.
MY FAVOURITES ARE: Bella Donna, Wild Heart, Rock A Little, Other Side Of The Mirror, Street Angel, Trouble In Shangri-La, Timespace, Crystal Visions, Enchanted Box-Set, The Soundstage Sessions + all her demos and unreleased tracks =D
I love this song and I am in total agreement with my fellow Stevie fans, "Rock A Little" is her best album!!! Especially this song, "Talk To Me", "I Can't Wait" and "Sister Honey"!!!!
I totaly agree with you...one of her best albums...a lot of up tempo. total hot rock 80's rock. i just didn't agree with the sequence of the album. on another utube page i listed the way i listen to the cd...you should try it, it just flows better i can't wait sister honey if i were you talk to me rock a little imperial hotel the nightmare some become strangers no spoken word i sing for the things has anyone written a song for you
thanks man, i appreciate u taking the time to do that. everytime i listen to the cd i listen in that order :-) so cool to me other stevie fans on here! feel like we're all part of some magic kingdom or something..lol!
That arrangement is awesome! It flows SO much better than the original...THANKS! I tried it in my itunes and burned a disc of it, except I added "Battle Of The Dragon" to it...my arrangement goes like this: I Can't Wait Sister Honey If I Were You Talk To Me Rock A Little Imperial Hotel The Nightmare Some Become Strangers No Spoken Word Battle Of The Dragon I Sing For The Things Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You
OMG!! Im so excited that you tried the order and liked it. thanks very much. im gonna have to check out "Battle Of The Dragon" never heard that before. I wish she would record "City Of Hope"..that is such a beautiful song. thanks againg for tryin the sequence...that really makes me feel good.
This was the point in Stevie's career where she should have put her boot down and told all her 'handlers' that her fans love her for Her songs..I was disappointed with 'Rock a little'.
ok..im listening to these songs from rock a little..i love it! i was afraid to get the cd because i knew she was kinda heavy on drugs during this time. i have all her cd's except this one and street angel.
This was written for Stevie during a time she could not write pop songs. Rock A Little is the only Stevie album where most songs were written by someone else. Very sad!
No, Stevie only wrote 3 songs for Rock A Little. Has Anyone Ever Written Anyone For You, Rock A Little, and No Spoken Word. All other songs were written by someone else or heavily co-written by someone else. Many Stevie demos that were recorded for this album were thrown away when ace producer Jimmy Iovine walked out during the middle of recording of this album.
This song was co-written with Rick Nowles. Wild1995 is correct, only three sole Nicks compositions are on Rock A Little. All others are co-written pieces except for Talk To Me (Chris Sandford) and Some Become Strangers.
@ipostrandomthings She wrote it with Rick Nowels, I'm sure she did all the lyrics and probably came up with the melody and some of the chords then he arranged it as Lindsey Buckingham had done for her in earlier. She is my favorite singer songwriter in the whole world, but i would have loved to see how some of her music might be litte more advanced if she had some musical training (like in piano). Anyway, shes amazing.
@leafjlr333 I don't know - some of these lyrics are very un-Stevie - "Every boy must learn to be a man," etc.... They're very straightforward and poppy. The melody, too, is much poppier than Stevie usually writes. I think she probably did some "additional lyrics" as with "Seven Wonders." The bridge lyrics sound a little more like Mama Nicks - "I believe that love is a living thing... born into our destinies" - that could definitely be her!
@shiningautumn You're right. The story I heard is that the song was primarily written by Rick Nowels, but that he encouraged Stevie to add her own spin to it and that she did indeed write the bridge lyrics.
Some of the songs were co-written. With some of the songs, she got sent the music and then she wrote the words to fit around the music that had already been wrote. I Can't Wait happened like that.
I never knew why this song did not go straight to #1 nor receive any airplay. Payola rhymes with Crayola, and someone (not Stevie) apparently colored it black.
I got Rock A Little (completing my solo stevie collection) on December 31, 2007, and within the first few minutes discovered this song. I later grew to love it! It is currently my most successful video.
