Question: I need to move to NYC for a job. Is Astoria is good area . It is somewhat safe. How is the neighborhoods like. If anyone can educate me i would apperciate the info. Thank you NY.
i actually grew up in Astoria. yeah, i'd say astoria is a good place. if you're from miami, you might like some of the latin aspects of astoria, but astoria has no glitz like miami. it's always been mainly greek, italian, irish, peppered with latins, polish, germans, armenians, and jewish. today, they're all still there, but--depending on what parts of astoria--you may be near quiet tree-lined streets or near hustle and bustle. Astoria's close to the City, good food & ppl.
...also, Astoria's gotten more expensive, though, cause of all the outta towners who've moved in from all over the hinterlands of the country, especially from the midwest. If you're used to palm trees, glitz, beachy scenes, and a flip-flop sand and skin set, you may not like Astoria--in fact, you may not like NY at all, cause it's not like that here. It's more old world, euro/latin/middle-eastern in Astoria these days, with older but nicely-preserved homes, good shops, & tough ppl.
@NYer79 Hey thanks for the info that’s awesome info and yes, unfortunately my City is fake as hell. Its almost annoying! Thankfully, i never played along with the X Medium shirts and steroid personas. It seems like NY (Astoria) and the "Old World" would be my type of town. By the way cool term! Hey, if i ever run into you, two beers on me my friend! Salute and thanks again.
Wow, a Starbucks at 31st and Ditmars????unheard of... I lived in that location from 1985 until about 1999 and yes, you could tell it was changing even then, I used to love the cannolies at La Guli Bakery and the pizza place at the corner.... is that pizzeria still there? they closed up the eating area and made it a restaurant separate from the pizzeria... booohooo.... and Genovese on the other corner....
..yeah, anytime a Starbucks opens someplace..it'll get yuppied-up in no time. Astoria (and NY) has its own coffee houses and shops. Starbucks-not-needed here..
