  • I had a Susie Homemaker oven and vacuum cleaner and LOVED them. I really wanted a blender and juicer, but mom let me use the real ones instead. I think that my love of cooking came from those toys.

  • ohhhh, the 70s.

  • I got the stove and iron when I was 4 in 1967. By the time I reached 8, I had them all, except for the taffy maker. I think they were the coolest toys ever made, with the exception of Barbie. They were not "dangerous" I was never injured by any of these toys. They kept me away, from the real appliances. I wanted to be like my mother, I admired her. Because of Womens' Lib, I couldn't live like her. Men now expect, it all, from women. Men now have, more freedom, to do as they choose. Women don't.

  • Anybody know if there are any websites that sell these things? they. look. awesome.

  • why cant they use the original stove???

  • I vaguely remember getting a toy iron that plugged into the wall and got warm. Maybe it was that one.

  • Women were conned into the workplace so prices could go up - that is the only reason - it had nothing to do with rights or equality - now women are FORCED to work and leave their children with strangers - some choice

  • There are some great pictures of the Suzy Homemaker appliances in the old Christmas catalogs. For example, the 1968 JC Penney Christmas Catalog has an awesome full-color page ad. Topper Toys was truly an awesome company. Sadly, after a two year battle they were forced into bankruptcy by the US District Court in 1973. In addition to Suzy Homemaker, they also made the hugely successful Dawn Doll line, Johnny Lightning, and many other terrific toys.

  • I had all of the Suzie Homemaker toys and Miss Smartypants as well.

  • Not a thing Tranurse. I think a person should have the right to choose the way they want to live their lives. If raising kids and taking care of your home is your choice, all the power to you.

  • Why didn't they make a SuHe Homemaker?

    Imbeciles.

And I just realized something: dolls are actually meant to teach girls how to raise children.

  • Omigosh!!! I had these toys...I remember those were hot items when I was in the 3rd grade. And it seemed like it was never ending.

  • Cool, Susy Homemaker 3rd degree burn oven or the grind o flesh ice cream maker.

Not so sure these toys would fare so well today.

What they were missing was Juliette Prowse dancing on her Mannington floors with her bra on fire! LOL.

Sorry, these commercials are so archaic, and to me anyways, tell little girls they're destined to one thing. While some little girls made fantastic and very happy homemakers, I'm glad that we've evolved a little since then.

You've come a long way baby!

  • @broot4u I'm sick as a dog over here, but your comment made me laugh from a deep hearty place. LMAO at 3rd degree oven and Grind O Flesh icecream maker. I couldn't agree more though. I'm glad we've evolved since then.

  • @apachette07 Hope you're feeling better. Maybe a snow cone with some bloody finger topping might make you feel better? LOL. Perhaps a bowl of popcorn with melted Barbie shoes for topping?

    LOLOLOL.

I can almost hear the sirens now....

  • @broot4u Lmao you are a riot!!! I'm feeling a lot better, thanks. An occassional cough. Here and there. Must've gotten a Barbie shoe lodged in my trachea. LMAO.

  • @apachette07 evolved? I think we have done quite the opposite. Look at how the country has gone straight to hell. No one knows how to act because everyone has other people taking care of their children.

  • @broot4u Archaic yes,but as I mentioned in an earlier post, society not to mention the economy has changed dramatically!! When these commercials were made, the husband was the "Breadwinner",because he didn't have to worry about job security, aside from a temporary job layoff. No one's job is safe anymore!! More women today have college degrees, than when these commercials were filmed. There are however women running or helping to run "Home Based Bussinesses",so they are earing income, even at home.

  • what's wrong with being a wife and mother, if that is what YOU want to be? i thought feminism was about women having choices. i don't like the idea of a woman feeling guilty for deciding what she wants to do with her life.

  • @tranurse One has to bear in mind, this commercial was made in a different time before "Inflation",and general "ECONOMIC STAGFLATION"!! Nowadays women have to work, not only to pay for "Basic Nessesities",but also if she has student loans from college, that need to be paid for!! Also,no one's job is safe and immune from layoffs anymore,so the wife has to have job skills to survive in today's economy!! If the husband gets hurt or sick and cannot work, the wife should have employment skills!!

  • @turbinexman i work. my kids like to eat. i just don't like the idea that i HAVE to do anything. at least not to make anyone happy.

  • @tranurse The point that I was trying to make is that it's a different world nowadays, from when those commercials were filmed. A wife's income is a deciding factor,in whether or not a couple gets approved for a mortgage loan. This is what a real estate agent had told me,especially in states that have "Higher Than Average" default rates,ie. Florida and Nevada, particularlly the Las Vegas area. The reality is the economy "SUCKS" right now,and that it takes two incomes to "Stave Off" creditors.

  • @turbinexman i agree with you on the economy. it's harder and harder, to make things add up at the end of the month.

  • @tranurse Its b/c of inflation. The dollar has lost about 97% of its worth since 1913, and most of it has deminished since the 70s when they took gold backing completely off the dollar.

  • @tranurse I agree. I used to be "one of those" women who looked down on those who chose to be at home and not work. Well, now I've made the choice because I have the choice. It's the best thing I've ever done in my life. If a woman (or man) has to work to make ends meet, well then that's what they have to do, but I definitely agree with your point about having the choice. It's now "chic" to work and be busy, have two nannies, a cook, cleaning crew, etc. Sad really.

  • I had the washer and the popcorn popper. I'd forgotten about the popper until I saw this video. I recently saw some Fisher Price activity kits. The doctor and tool kit had boys on the label. The kitchen and nursery set had girls. Not that much different.

  • girs, you can cook for everyone now- now don't you feel liberated? [coooo]....

  • What many people forget was even though womens lib started in the 60's, in the 70's most girls were still be trained to be mothers. I am 38 and I remember getting toys like a blender for Christmas or my birthday. Sexist toys? You bet, but that's how it was then. However if I ever have a daughter, I will let her make the choices with toys.

  • 6motion6 - my god ,can't you enjoy something from the past w`out the bull !!! you sound like the "poor ole black folk" , your a probably a dyke

  • So you are markmustb1. One of what? A

I"m neither of what you say, but your racist, anti-gay comments show how smart you are.

  • Women's lib was started before '71, but I guess there was still a market for toys to train women to be homemakers.

  • Oh man! I remember my green apple stove. You're right it was waaay better than the easy bake oven!!! Didn't have the Smarty Pants doll. Actually I don't even remember it.

  • i member smarty pants my mom has 1 i asked it "do u smell like crap" and it said "yes"

  • I was a pround owener of an apple green stove and washer. The stove far exceeded any easy bake oven. The washer DID wash, but you had to manually empty it out. Ahhhh, childhood memories....
