@tornadoguy100 looks to be a 3 man crew.... umpire in mid-infield goes out to watch for catch umpire at first goes in towards 2nd while Homeplate ump goes toward 3rd. If ump at first anticipates a play at 3rd for the homeplate ump he then would go towards home to cover any potential play at the plate.
He is going to third in case there was a play at third. The lead runner is his and the trail runner is the first base umps in a 2 man system like this after the third ump went out. But, he should have read the play better and realized there was no play at third for him to call. That is why he went to third in the first place. In this case, he really didn't need to but did anyway. And, on his way to third, he was too close to fair territory since the ball was not close to the line.
He should have been in foul territory more in the first place since he didn't have to make a fair/foul call. Do not get in the middle of the infield if there is no need. Here, there was no need to be near fair territory. He would have a better angle to see a play at third in foul territory from in fron of the play than in fair territory. Which is exactly why the PU gets third baseline extended to make a tag call at the plate. To see everything.
There are enough manuals written. Most of it comes from experience that just can't be written. Such as hustling, no one writes it but it is understood the ump needs to do everything he can to be in position. Positioning, however, is in the manuals. Get one and read it.
I've read a few in my day...but positioning is more than just what is in the manuals. Instinct can't be tought. I can think of quite a few tag plays at the plate where I didn't want to be 3rd base extended. I was just making fun of how in depth you went on umpiring for just a simple comment. I'm sure your like a minor league or major league ump or something.
If the ump would have hustled back to the plate instead of walking backwards. As soon as he saw the lead runner touch third, he should have been jogging back to the plate. He assumed there would be no play at the plate since the runner was being held. He got caught assuming instead of just doing as he is supposed to and be prepared. He would have been in position if he had hustled and planned for a play at the plate.
Why be such an a%%? I just mentioned the college thing, as reference that I have some idea of what Im talking about. Not trying to big league anyone. I do JC , DIII and HS varsity here in So Cal, just another guy trying to move up. Anyways...yes, only if he has a play at 3rd. But your missing my point, he ended up inside cause he tripped. THEN, he had the presence of mind to adjust. I think thats what makes a good official. Had something go wrong, but he adjusted, and got to a good spot.
On watching again..PU had no play at 3rd. If he didnt trip, he would retreat to home, to take the play. All Im saying is, he made a great recovery to get into position to make a call. So, out of position? Yeah, if your going by CCA. But CLEARLY out of position? No. Great recovery
Well, basewick..since I umpire baseball, college, I think I know. And I could be wrong, but heres what I see. Ball hit to left, PU comes up to 3rd, as he should, since it appears there is a runner on first. He reads U3 going out, now revert to 2 man. As he comes up, he trips, which takes him into fair territory. Which looks like he should be anyways as R1 is coming to 3rd. Now, R1 tries for home..arnt we taught if there is a play at home..to come down inside, in fair territory?
I thought he did well. He was moving up the line and fell, has happened to most of us probably at some point..I thought he made a good adjustment to make the call. He looked like he was in great position for the play at the plate.

It is his call IF the ball has the left fielder going towards the foul line. Base umpire only has fly balls in the "V"
