Remember, these guys were great at what they did, and I think there is still a great deal of kayfabe with the old timers, even though they've come out and showed us how they made the magic happen. I've seen interviews where Piper talks about cracking a non-gimmic coconut and that he was afraid Jimmy would get up and kill him. He thought he killed Jimmy with the coconut, etc. I think there's still some kayfabe going on.
Gotta hand it to McMahn here because this segment is marketing genius. Piper was the perfect bad guy. After this aired in 1985, every kid (and adult) on my block was talking about it... for weeks and weeks. IMO this is one of the most defining moments in tv wrestling history. This elevated Piper to a higher level and made average people pay more attention to pro wrestling and the WWF.

If you watch closely, Piper's holding the coconut very gently in his hand and then hits Snuka in the face with it and it flew apart. So it was either a fake coconut or they did something to a real coconut to make it all soft and mushy.
Yep,sometimes I'm a dumbass. I just found the page and it's a store-bought coconut. No other setup to it. He knew it was going to hurt Snuka a lot, but that it'd look cool. Piper says in the book, "The instant it hit I heard Jimmy give a moan...and he started falling back...I'm not positive, but I am pretty sure he was unconscious upon impact." Then later he says that Snuka just stared at the floor of his dressing room for a long time after that, not moving. Might still feel the repercussions.

Piper was the best heel, he just generated heat like you wouldn't believe!! His promos were the shit,and they were coming off the top of his head. Too bad everything is scripted now. If they just let the superstars and divas cut their own promos the way it used to be WWE would be much better.

the wrestlers today can't cut a promo today. everything is written down. you can see them looking at the teleprompterwhen they are talking!!! this was all off the top of his head. piper was one of the greatest promo men of all time. with ric flair and dusty rhodes.

@TheDoomSquid Yep. In fact, he even wore a T-shirt saying I am a Mexcan, Chicano, Hispanic and all those words were crossed out with the word WETBACK in bold capitol letters. Piper definitely was a heat magnet.

I've heard a lot of interviews with Piper and he always says this skit is his biggest regret because it gave Snuka permanent damage and pretty much ended his career. That's a terrible legacy, Snuka was a big public figure but he really was one of the very few idols for Asian kids in America.

@valdrich319 I met Piper at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2003. I asked him about this segment. He said the whole thing was staged and the coconut was pre-cracked to lessen the damage. The coconut was market so Piper knew which one to crack over Jimmy's head.
I agree that Piper was awesome and very believable in this segment... don't forget, pro wrestling is fake.

There is no way you could hit someone in the head with that kind of force and not hurt them. Even though it was planned, Jimmy still got injured. All Piper's pit segments were pre-planned, just like everything else in wrestling. This is my last reply to you.

I have seen interview with Piper bout this he was scared to death of Snuka because the Coconut was real and hit Snuka square in the head and Snuka was pissed and really knocked senseless that why you see Piper walking away heading for the door because he knows when he gets up he gonna get his ass kicked that was real was going to kill his ass just like his girlfriend in Germany

lol, this is like jr. hs all over again! i used to hate/love roddy piper so much (even though i was more into NWA). piper's pit always used to make me so mad!!! i think i actually cried when this one was shown...supafly snuka was so awesome and roddy was just whipping him!...and then he escapes like a dog out the backdoor!...criminal!
he did the piledriver too, which was the most awesome finishing move.
