  • Emotional dispensation by Prof Sacchs doesnt work, is like dead aid indeed! Please review the book and articulate the issues. Dr Moyo just caught off-guard the proponents of more aid to African continent without end and obviously absurd. The dishonesty of the pro-Aid economists failing to propound alternative aid models and yet know what works and what does not. .

  • Jeffrey Sachs is such a sanctimonious fool, yes she may not have a child in an African village but then neither does he but then I see no reason why that should matter. This moron is not being objective at all- a trend that I have noticed in other videos of him.

  • White men talking absolute shit! Africa is play groud for white men, they rob and pillage with their multi-national corporations. they give dictors weapons and sign bogus contracts to exploit the mineral resources. they supply both sides of the conflict, all this maintains the status quo of exploitation. Food grown in by white farms in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia is exported to Europe

  • Since when did Europeans start having love and compassion for Africans? Africans are one of the groups they despise the most and that is why I'm not buying into this rhetoric about how Aid delivered to African will lift it away from its predicament..

Aid is used as a front to financially and militarily support despotic regimes in Africa that serve western multinational interest to the detriment of the African working class.

  • your all wong

  • The message is clear. The western powers do not want Africa to get out of its predicament. Aid has not worked. Cut of the aid pipeline and let Africans devise their own plan to solve their problems.

I am an African and I don't see how aid has helped me or my country. Can the MP explain why aid continues to flow to Africa and yet poverty is getting worse. Aid is part of the problem not solution. Like she said aid makes African leaders to take the back seat not making any effort on their own.

  • By the beginning of the 19th Century the entire New World was free of colonial rule. Why was it that only the US and Canada grew to become prosperous? Why has the rest of the New World ended up in poverty?

  • Many reasons. The first of which is the nature of the colonial empires. In south/central America the colonial powers were rapists. They were there to drain resources, spread religion and otherwise destabilize the region.

English and French colonialism in the North America was focused on developing new territory. They built major cities and established infrastructure.

When the colonial powers were kicked out North America was in a radically better position than South/Central America.

  • Exactly.

Development was a priority for the English and French colonialists in the Americas whereas the Spanish and Portuguese approached colonialism as a solely predatory and evangelical tool.

Although I don't necessarily agree that the SA, CA and Mexico became dependent on the USA for development, the US certainly did play a major role in the post-colonial development of the region. (A role that was not often positive)

  • bono and sachs do not need africa.they made it very big on their own.

the big corporations do not like them because they keep them accountable for their bad actions.

its so easy to say here is the solution.moyo go to zambia to implemente your solution or shup up.

  • dambisa became somebody only by attacking people like dr sachs and bono who did more for africa than anyone.read her book and go to her myspace to know the fraud she is.the same corporations who are creating all the trouble in africa to better exploit its raw richess used her to badmouth bono and dr sachs.look how easy is for her to be on all the western big media..

  • that stupide woman does not know what she talking about.instead of spending her time on tv rooms talking, she could go to her country and implemente her so called solution.if it work , we will copie it everywhere in africa.she should be ashamed self-promoting using something this important.the life of billion people.

  • What Africa needs more than anything is expanded transportation. Without more roads and railroads on the continent development will remain stagnant. The continent can't fully benefit from trade without good transportation.

  • Give to them baby tell it like it is.... Dr Moyo

  • Did Dambisa not say the aid she is talkin about is NOT humanitarian aid. So what on earth is he harping on about? - Dr Sachs that is.

  • Did Dambisa not say the aid she is talkin about is NOT humanitarian aid. So what on earth is he harping on about?

  • riz khan is awesome

  • Sachs sucks.... This guy misses the point, he certainly has selective hearing hence his uninsightfull selective comments... Why did he have the last word??

  • Calm down and look at the facts that aid has a role to play in promoting real wellbeing for LEDCs. Dambisa's arguments are shallow and narrow. Look at the Hardtalk programme where an aid expert counters much of what her book says. Yes- aid does not always work, but it is part of a wider package to address more structural problems. Also, read the review at zambian economist blogspot, dated March 2009 for a thorough breaking-down of the flaws of Dambisa's book.

  • experts? hasnt africa been in their hands for the past 50 years? and to what end..

  • Just because someone is an expert, doesn't make them bad... and NO, Africa has not been 'in the hands of expertrs for the past 50 years' - it has been in the hands of a multitude of varying factors as well as experts. Plus, its not the same 'experts' - the new experts are trained differently, learning the lessons from the past, and see the poor themselves as experts in their own conditions.

  • just because someone is an expert doesn't make them even slightly capable of fixing anything. most 'experts' have nothing but a supposed right to appear on tv and make childish non-arguments that stunt progress.

"the new experts are changed differently, learning the lessons from the past, and see the poor themselves as experts in their own conditions"

what does that even mean? it sounds like a substandard example of a vague and cliche political duck out.

  • Actually, yes, an expert could be anyone - in this case it happens to be someone who is widely read and familiar with real world cases of development and its various discourses. However, 'childish non-arguments that stunt progress' - why do you say that? To my second point: learning lessons, evidence shows the poor better represented (not always, but more than before) in Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs). Aid is also being restructured in a number of positive ways. It was no duck out.

  • Wow. A little aggressive... why so? I know they are websites, they just seem to be a mix of both leftist and rightist arguments. I do counter what her book says, for instance, where will developing economies get a hold of foreign direct investment in 5 years? where? u tell me. Also, even if it does come, the neo-patrimonial structure will be there to distribute it unevenly. Finally, check out the review of the book at Zambian economist blog - then come and talk. As it goes, I am not a Marxist. x

  • i totally agree one hundred percent. and whenever you say things people say your being negative or hating. i am glad you can express this view so clearly

  • An inspiration to Africans. She is an example of the new generation, who have watched with embarressment their father's generation make a mess of the huge potential they were handed after independance. All strength to her - it will be native Africans like her, and not white Africans or foreigners that change the mindset.

  • They need democratic socialism not the U.S. economic model. If this guy represents the WB. The US and Britain tried to do a coup on a little country on the continent. The poor are getting poorer becuase look NOW WITH THE FUCKING IMF WTO so called "NATION BUILDING" GOD DAMN! The policies of the U.S. has forced the world developing countries back into poverty! You construct a better nations with SOCIALISM! She forgot Latin America Cuba fought in Angola when THE US WANTED IT OIL!

  • Who wants to establish a military centcom, southcom africom in africa? WHO? The U.S its not to help Africa to prosper its to grasp over its resources and extend into the region to fight of China! Military wars is funded by the biggest arms dealer? WHO? WHO GOT THE BIG GUNS?

  • As Africans sit on the negotiation tables for loans and 'aid', they need to have in the back of their minds what you have just outlined. I made this same argument eleven years ago and wolves decended on me like a ton of bricks.

One person I don't really well once said, he who refuses to think has no advantage over he who can't think.

  • Moyo is very smart but she needs to think and focus more on how to distribute the "aid to africa" with high accountability. the thieves get punished which is so far not the case. cutting aid to Africa is not the solution here. a lot of the leaders in africa are corrupt and thats what needs to be addressed.

p.s---re Eritrea vs. W.Africa, please dont get into such arguments cuz its exactly what we call "retrogressive thinking". Africa should unite instead of the borders you're creating

  • Why in the world did J. Sacks get the last word???

  • Jeffrey Sacks doesn't get it..

  • ok the sacks guys is talking crap as long as theres aid there is no trade or equal trade its not working at all it need to be removed and something new tried. the aid is the reason the western countries can swope in and get resource at by far cheaper prices

  • Somaliland is Africa's Best-Kept Secret. This sister is very smart.

  • By logic, the Nation of Eritrea should not exist. The secessionist province's independence fighters ought never to have defeated Ethiopia in their 30-year-long struggle. They were outmanned, outgunned, abandoned or betrayed by every ally; their cause was hopeless. They won by force of character, a unity and determination so steely not all the modern armaments, super power support or economic superiority of Ethiopia could withstand it.

    TIME

STICK YOUR AID,,, ERITREA FLYS WITH IT'S OWN WINGS.

  • Sachs should just keep his mouth shut there. Mad man. After making me hawk cheese in my village, he is talking rubbish. Its a good thing that he is supporting aid in Africa. I just wonder who the worse demon is: Jefferey Sachs or Dambisa Moyo.

  • The solution is family planning. Help African despotic regimes to apply strict family planning. The donor community should help Africa with controlling the explosion population, then focus on agriculture base economy.

  • Mr. Collier is an old thinker and his kind of idea has died with the rise of Obama, thank God. He never mentions how Europeans and other Asian countries as well as African countries do well without ports. His thinking may be a reflection of the old European thinking not for today's Africa. Africa cannot support itself yet, he is talking about export, while Africa is inundated with import. Think about it. Africa's major problem is donation, more donation mean more babies and more mouth to feed.

  • LA TIMES: On Eritrea.

"We need this country [Eritrea] to stand on its two feet. Fifty years and billions of dollars in post-colonial international aid have done little to lift Africa from poverty"said President Issias Afewerki. "These are crippled societies," Afewerki said of neighbors who he charged rely heavily on donors. "You can't keep these people living on handouts because that doesn't change their lives."

He noted "Self-Reliance is preparing yourself for partnership -- equal partnership"

  • Lets see Eritrea in one year before we start applauding this decision.

  • We have seen this for more than one year, now compare Eritrea to other african countries!

    We are doing just fine!

  • Eritrea is far from fine...its still at the bottom of the UN's indicators list .

Poverty is rampant, especially because of the severity of the war, compounded by the effects of drought. Asmara is the only functional city. There are few medical facilities and there is a huge illiteracy problem. The state's leadership is so delusional it still supports the carnage in sudan.

  • I dnt noe wot "fine" means by you but this is far from fine to me especially if you are looking at the facts.

By the way, the EU is about to send you critical aid despite your objections. I'll love to see you reject it

  • Eritrea doesn't take foreign aid, that is a known fact!

  • Send the Un indicator list

What you say isnt true, Eritrea is a prime example of what all African nations should be!

  • What are you kenyan? West African? Compare Eritrea to your nation, your people are begging to be as successful as us!

  • The Los Angeles Times noted that Eritrea, one of the world's poorest nations, "walked away from more than $200 million in aid in the last year alone, including food from the United Nations, development loans from the World Bank and grants from international charities to build roads and deliver healthcare." President Issias Afewerki of Eritrea vows he will not lead another "spoon-fed" African country "enslaved" by international donors. "These are crippled societies," he said of his neighbors

  • "We cannot expect any party to impose aid on us when we have not asked for it. So how can one possibly make this an issue of controversy with the Eritrean government & the people of this country? When we are not in need of aid, when we are convinced that we can live on our toil & feed ourselves, & we would like to learn how to feed ourselves & how to work to relieve ourselves from aid, why would someone come & say you need aid & we will give you aid? (President Issias Afewerki of Eritrea)

  • QUOTE: " We must build a society that is free from exploitation of man by man, and independent of foreign aid. If we do not rely on our own energies and resources to solve our problems, economic and otherwise, we will find ourselves depending politically on someone. (The Visionary leader - President Issias Afewerki of Eritrea, in 1974)

Post independence Eritrea in 1991, the nation implemented a brilliant and unique self-reliance program and put a halt to foreign aid.

  • Europe is responsible for what Africa is now

  • jeffrey Sachs sounds like a drug pusher

just listin to all those ( pornishess , lead to deaths , wrong-headed , dangeras , people will die ) catch words !

  • if africans made revolutions that were for the people, then the distrubution of wealth would be just fine.and muslim west african nations(mali, senegal, mauritania, etc.should have islamic revolutions.if usa didnt help already rich israel than those good old tax dollars could go to people who need it.but the west would invade africa.kind of like sudan.were was usa then 8 yrs ago?but now china has its control over africa so its '''human rights issue''' in darfur now huh??wake up folks.

  • You could not have said it better. The whole international criminal court warrant of arrest for Omar Al Bashir is all political and a plane hypocrisy. The rules are imposed on others but do not apply to those who created them and are the biggest perpetrators.
