I've watched maybe 8 videos previewing Gnome Shell and I still don't get what the fuss is about. It looks like another workspace switcher with a file navigation bar on the left and fancier compiz/beryl-like effects. I love Gnome but I have say, if this is the big new thing for 3.0, I'm not impressed.
New arrangements of GUI controls is not especially new, nor is it particularly efficient (if that ever was a workspace concern).
You want desktop efficiency, customize some keyboard shortcuts.
o yeah i agree, i do see it's value for an extremest multi-tasker, but for most users 2 desktops are more than enough and when you only have 2, it's easier to just hit a keystroke or move your cursor to a corner of your screen to switch desktops/enter expo. also, this is just a guess here, but from how it looks with this extra layer integrating on your desktops, it may kill performance in fullscreen 3d apps.
probably... quite chaotic? :S It seems interesting but i really don't know if i'd rather this GNOME Shell or the current one... time will show us how will be in the future, in Lucid Lynx (yep?) 10.04.
