Short story, it was originally a military internetwork of computers, which spread to unitversity computers shortly thereafter. The communications protocol and hardware infrastructure was meant to function properly even if a nuclear war took out most communications nodes. DARPA funded the original "Internet" project. It was designed and first implemented over twenty-five years ago.

Well off site back ups are a great thing to have... It is especially good for businesses to keep extra back ups off site... One of my best freinds owns a small data center here in florida and we offer mostly high end servers but we never know what is on your computer we also offer a KVM for servers so you can even install your own OS and so we never see it... So if you do get a server off site I would recommend one of the small companies so your not as likely to have prying eyes.

I worked for a data center called Sago Networks in tampa for a while and the FBI would come in and monitor traffic on peoples servers... oh they had warrants and all and usually it was people from oversees and stuff like that but I still see it as an invasion of privacy... You could be right about them coming for us but if they do i will anonymously let people know about it on the forums... I hate big government and you know why, because they hated us first... I use Ubuntu and i love it, it just works great! ;D

Haven't looked back since i started using it, and i run games fine on linux with or without Wine and similar prog's also.

And with the repositories it's easier to install software on Ubuntu then Windows!!!!

And the Ubuntu forum community are so helpfull.

Kubuntu is the same it just uses KDE instead of Gnome desktop.

Yes, for all practical purposes, you are right. After purchasing a PC, (or a Mac), a person has to go through LOTS of work installing and learning to maintain a safe and free, (as in free speech), OS, (such as one of the many versions of LINUX). Most people won't make the time necessary to do "free computing"; it requires a lot of effort, and more intelligence than most "Amerikans" have.
