Actual video footage is good - soundtrack sucks ass......so many video's are ruined with a crappy soundtrack when all we really want to hear is the vehicle itself....Vince.
@MissLadyDoolittle It wasn't my car, so I'm not sure. The tread looks kind of like a Hakkapelliita. If you go to tirerack.com and look at their winter tire selection, that's a good place to start. You don't have to buy from them, but their site is a good reference. In AK, I think your biggest issue would be low ground clearance, since the snow can pile up pretty quick at times. Stay out of the drifts and your Miata should be fine - and fun!
@earlyapexprod Thanks! I read the reviews, and picked the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4. Thanks for the tip, and for posting this video. I probably would have sold the car if I hadn't seen it, and I really didn't want to do that. I thought about the clearance thing, too, but only a truck would really be totally safe from that (maybe), and I am just not a truck babe. Not as my only ride, anyway... Watched some of your other videos, too...looks like you are having fun!
@MissLadyDoolittle Excellent choice! Hakkas are great. I sold a Miata once, and missed it ever since - all the way until I got another one. :) It is fun. I should get one of those t-shirts that says "still plays with cars." Glad I could help!

Funny how often I keep coming back to this video. I totally want to run my '00 LS in winterX, but Chicago-SCCA has nothing. From what I understand, I have to go pretty far north into Wisconsin to find events like these. :/ Mr. Scruff soundtrack is win, BTW. :)
Thanks! Before making the trip, make sure whoever you run with allows convertibles. Rules vary from "sure, whatever" to "absolutely not." Still, if you can find an event, go for it. The qualities that make a Miata handle so well also work on snow and ice, as long as you have decent tires.
Yes, sooner or later you need to replace it. You can make it last longer by treating it well, using a hardtop or not driving the car in winter, and not leaving the car out in a hailstorm. :)
It wasn't my car, so I'm not sure. The tread looks kind of like a Hakkapelliita. I ended up selling my Saturn and getting an AWD Civic wagon for the steep driveway where I used to live.
Ooo, that was a friend's car two years ago, so I don't know for sure. They were 15" Saturn wheels, so probably 195/60/15 or something like that. Currently we have 185/60/14s waiting for our 91 Miata (stock size).
It's all in the tires. And a clue of driving skill, but tires count for a lot and will forgive a lot of mistakes if you have the traction to recover from them. :D
z3m roadster on ice. mmm.

Okay, tire specifics, please? I recently moved to Alaska, and every time I think about trading in my Miata for something else, I remember this video.

Are the studded tires only on the back, or all around?
dtmbcorp 2 years ago
All 4 tires. My dad used to run snow tires on the back of his V8 RWD boats, but having them on the front lets you brake and turn as well as go.
earlyapexprod 2 years ago
Ah. Yes, being able to brake and turn is important... :D

just wondering, does a miata feel cold in the winter with a soft top?
rtsoccerplayer 2 years ago
Believe it or not, no. The car has excellent heat, and it's so small there isn't a lot of interior space to heat up.
earlyapexprod 2 years ago
oh that's cool
rtsoccerplayer 2 years ago
oh yea, how long does the soft top last? is it true that you have to replace it eventually?
