I saw a documentary and one veteran said it was common for soldiers to wear Chinese copies of American sneakers since they were more comfortable then the cheap boots they were issued. Since the army is so vast, the boots were more functional then quality.
He noted, if you look at many portraits and photos of soldiers during this campaign, most of the images display soldiers waist up, so censor the image of soldiers wearing sneakers instead of boots.
