  • In my opinion one of the best but most underrated songs on the whole album.

  • I swear I have heard a similar piano melody before on another song. Does anybody happen to know what that song is?

  • Awesome song.

  • probably my favorite clash track

  • May I recommend the book 'An Essential Guide To Music In The 1970s' by Johnny Zero. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • London Calling=One of the most innovative albums EVER!!

  • It's amazing how musically mature the Clash were.

  • There's been a mere handful of really great songwriters over the decades, and

Strummer\Jones are among them. The muse sat on their shoulders for 6-7 years.

You cannot compare The Ramones or The Sex Pistols to The Clash.

  • "And if the keeper of time moves slowly / He won't be alive for long". If the hairs on the back of your neck aren't standing up when you listen to this song, you're clinically dead.

  • Really good record one of there best EPIC RIP Joe-listen to strummerville

  • Any fan of modern music should own this album.

  • The best song from the greatest album of all time. Thus, the greatest song of all time.

  • love it

  • brilliant simply brilliant

  • So there u punk maniacs.

One of the greatest albums ever made. and it's made by a punk band. and it's not punk.

so stfu about REAL punk and FAKE punk.

  • @pfl95 Yeah and the Clash even made reggae songs

  • @pfl95 what is all this talk about The Clash's style being punk and other stuff. punk is a mind set, a philosophy not how the music sounds. it's about intentions and meaning. the clash could've rapped this and it still would've been punk. hell they could've made it an opera and it still would be.

  • @MadManSnake0 But, you know, the lyrics aren't really punk. They were leftists, not anarchists or nihilists.

  • @Daniraldo01 wtf is this bull shit? Punk was and is NOT defined by anarchism or nihilsm! Punk is a sound and the passion behind the message, not all nihilistic bull shit. Are the Ramones not punk because some of them were rightists?

  • @GBVrallyCI I think you misundertood me, but it was my fault, since I didn't express myself properly. For me, The Clash is punk, but is not as radical as some bands, because their lyrics are more leftists than anarchists. I'm not saying they're inferior to other bands or that's a bad thing, on the contrary, that's why I like The Clash. And, if some of the members of Ramones were rightists, they certainly didn't demonstrate this in their lyrics (again, I'm not saying that's bad).

  • @Daniraldo01 what? The Clash were contemporaries to The Sex Pistols who introduced the idea of anarchy and nihilism into punk. thus punk lyrics need not but anarchistic nor nihilistic. even anarchist punks still lean left.

  • @MadManSnake0

You mean lean right (which would make no sense) because anarchism is considered as far right as you can get on the political spectrum. And the farthest right is considered dictatorship, so I ask you, which one is worse? Anarchy, or fascism?

  • @aijunk2 punks are crazy about where they stand in politics. they are anarchists yet hold a lot of the same idea of liberal democrats (minus the whole expanding of the federal government) (leftists being more communal and equality driven with rightists being more elitist (in the modern politcal standings of parties)). I am an anarcho-syndicalist.

hah! that doesn't surprise me and validates my point.

  • @MadManSnake0

My bad, I messed up. Anarchism is the farthest LEFT you go. Liberals are democrats. Anarchist are part of the left wing spectrum. This is the left wing of the spectrum: It goes, moderate, liberal, radical, anarchist. A DEMOCRAT would follow under the left side, so I don't understand what you're trying to say here.

  • @aijunk2 Anarchism isn't far left, anarchism is off of the "left wing-right wing" scale. Farthest left is a Marxist state.

  • @aijunk2 Cause your scale is one dimensional. For instance, there are liberal conservatives, and conservative liberals. The spectrum has a y, and an x axis. The terms are not interchangeable, but have been used that way since we have two parties(in America).

  • @TheHooliganEyes

That's why it's called being a moderate. A liberal conservative is moderate (in the middle of left and right, but a bit more on the left side) and and vice versa for conservative liberal (being in the middle, but a bit more to the right)

  • @aijunk2 i'm not so sure about that. the right tends to be restrictive about what a federal government can do thus wouldn't the furthest right you go end with anarchy? and wouldn't expanding the power of federal government allow unlimited power ie dictatorship? either way i see anarchy as actually neither left nor right but rather just some point above the line with some values corresponding sometimes to a left or right. or maybe just some sort of quantum particle in superposition.

  • @MadManSnake0

Anarchy means no rules at all. It is the survival of the fittest. So yeah, depending on how you view it; anarchy can be farthest right or left.

  • @aijunk2 @xcheesyxbaconx @TheHooliganEyes @MadManSnake0 so u guys are a bit confused about anarchism. anarchism means no state, not no rules. the rules are just voluntary and based on voluntary association. there are anarcho-capitalists and socio-anarchists. hitler was a Right wing statist, mao and stalin were Left wing statists. mother teresa n ghandi were "left-wing" but very much against state sponsored coersion, check mises(dot)org, freedomain radio, m rothbard, watch?v=Oc30eeXZTlg

  • @aijunk2 @xcheesyxbaconx cheesybacon is right.

  • @MadManSnake0

Funny thing is, they did make an opera, or a broad way show out of it . . . ironic, eh?

  • Anthemic stuff- 7 people need a good kicking

  • @seantbuckley88 Yo man why would you kicka nigga wit parkinsons? They were shaking so much they missed 'like'.

  • Er singt, wie Elvis Costello auch gern gesungen hätte

  • Excellent!

  • one of the best

    songs ever

  • Awesome song -you can actually Tango to it. Now THAT would be awesome on Dancing with the Stars!

  • This song gives me goosebumps: definitely my favourite Clash song

  • a primeira vez que escutei este disco eu tinha 9 anos de idade 1979 dai pouco tempo FUMEI O PRIMEIRO BAZEADO foi MASSA sou do BRASIL

  • This is definitely my favourite Clash song. I really like the message and Mick Jones' voice is awesome! I like how The Clash didn't only stick to the punk style but also ventured into different types of music. The melody and piano is really nice in this one.

  • tHI IA HE GREAT ES BAND EVER

  • so fucking good

  • Fuck you chillindork! this sucks ass! Go home and muff your mama!

  • Fuck you chillindork! this sucks ass! Go home and muff your mama!

  • Is this song a cover of something?

It just seems a very familiar melody. I would appreciate the help.

  • Pure Quality

  • "From The Hundred Years War to the Crimea with the lance and the musket and the Roman spear, to all of those men who have stood with no fear in the service of the King."

    goosebump-raising lyrics.

  • @Grendel53

These are the lyrics of a student of history. They are compelling I agree!

  • @Grendel53 Favorite line.

  • @Grendel53 True

  • both my kids listen to The clash and they are 16 an 12 i taught them well lol

  • i can listen to this album over and over again and it stay awesome and new

  • @waldomatic I think it's their best album.

  • This is one of the very few songs that can make me feel unsuppresable urges to dance/sing-along or both. Needless to say, this weapon is fatal in the wrong hands!

  • honestly there is not one bad song on this album, none of the songs get old dfsdkojgdfgjfd so good

  • Whats this bullshit about the Clash being such a "Brit" band that they would never have let "yanks" influence them...this song might as well be a love letter to Phil Spector...not to mention that w/o Elvis,Little Richard,Chuck Berry,etc...there wouldn't be any goddamn Brit scene...ever...These limey delusions are pretty damn amusing.

  • one ov the best albums ever played it 2 death

  • wot took ya so long Fried!!!

  • Who cares about The Clash being a punk band today ? In a decade or two they'll become sounding better than The Beatles, and I really apreciate The Beatles as I think they made the world a little better too.

  • @FeedTheTrollPlz you're off your nut. lets be frank. the beatles are half responsible for all the music that followed them, including everything today. i like the clash better, but they only had 2 amazing albums, and one very good one. the beatles created masterpieces and benchmarks for music for decades. you can't compare the too...

  • @paulvroc yes you can. The clash played music for the angry, rebellious youth, whereas the beatles played for the vicar.

  • @paulvroc with the exception of CTC, I'd say every Clash album was a masterpiece. The Beatles are overrated.

  • @FeedTheTrollPlz the clash arn't around anymore

  • This song is the best song off the best album of ALL TIME!!! It is timeless..sounds like it could have been released last week...RIP JOE...we will always be listening down here....

  • この人 死んだっけ?

  • ...great song from a great album!!!! The Clash yyyeeeaaahhh!!!!!

  • london calling is the best album ever made and this is the best song from it

  • Does anyone know who played the piano on this song?

  • The Card Cheat", the band recorded everything twice to create a "sound as big as possible.

Mickey Gallagher – played the piano

  • @AStrummerNamedJoe it WAS mick not mickey.

  • favorite clash song... next to guns of brixton :)

  • America the Leech

  • fantastic band, but RUINED once the yanks got hold of them. Finished em off to be honest. Americans leech on any British sub culture in attempt to persuade themselves that their nation actually HAS a culture itself. When it's clearly an empty hollow shell of commercial greediness devoid of any proper music. Cheers America.

  • @georgeisalive So your blaming America for Breaking up The Clash because they got big in America? .. Lol too funny.

  • @georgeisalive trust me thats not y the clash broke up lol they are a british band - heart and soul and would not let the yanks influence them... u think the yanks could do that to strummer?! noway lol

  • pure brilliance, still makes the hairs on my arms stand....GBTC (god bless the clash)

  • Man I wish I could have been a teenager during the 80's. I would have really enjoyed being a punk rocker.

  • @Wardenclyffeforever punk was the 70s not the 80s.

  • @cpj93070 I don't even care

  • @Wardenclyffeforever well you should care you FAKER your not and won't ever be a punk.

  • @cpj93070 No I mean I don't care about your opinion. I kind of just wanted to say that I liked the music, no need to be a complete dick for no reason. Get a life.

  • @Wardenclyffeforever stupid bitch, you get a life you fucking vermin, oh and grow a pair of balls while your there as well.

  • @cpj93070 Great comeback mate. You have done far more to prove my point than I ever could have.

  • the only song i dont really care for on the album is london calling, *shruggs

  • this song makes me so fucking happy

  • to all of the men who have stood with no fear, in the service of the king.

  • It sucks to be a 16 year old nowadays... music is a piece of shit, except for some good bands. By the way, why do u ALWAYS HAVE TO talk about Green Day on EVERY video of The Clash...? I dont really get it. Why do u think they suck? Their songs are meaningful, and those 3 guys are really down to earth.

JOE SAID HE LIKED GREEN DAY. Stop talking about them, this is not the right place...

Rest in peace, the one and only punk rock warlord... :(

  • @GreenDayFanGirl01 I love Green Day and the Clash too.

Green Day are a great band, they're as important this day and age as the Clash were back in the 70's. At least to America anyway. America needs a gigantic kick up its arse, just like England did in the 70's and 80's. the Clash did it for England and the world. Green Day are doing it for America and the world.

But now England needs a kick up it's arse once again... but there's no one for us anymore...

  • Words can't describe how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Clash! London Calling is one of the most fantastic albums EVER, and I really love this song... I don't know why, but it always makes me happy :")

  • Surely this is the best song EVER written?

  • I only ever knew a few of their hits, but my kid's getting me interested in The Clash, which is pretty cool...loving this one especially

  • John Peel was once quoted as saying there was nothing that could be added to or subtracted from Teenage Kicks which would improve it in any way. Thats exactly how i feel about this song. The Clash recorded literally dozens of wonderful songs but this tops the lot for me. The big fat sound used in production coupled with the piano and those emotive lyrics bring a lump to my throat. I mean, this is The Clash for fucks sake, how did they manage that?! Truly spellbinding

  • I'm a bit tired of people saying the clash sold out. In order to be a sell out you have to change your message and beliefs to fit what people want to hear. While they signed to become more mainstream, they sold the same quality music. The same can not be said about Green Day in the last few years...

  • @Eval999

People weren't upset that The Clash signed to a major label. I mean, Sex Pistols were on EMI for christ's sake. People back then were pissed off that London Calling was so radically different from their previous albums, the 1977 debut in particular--which were aggressive and "punk". London Calling isn't really a punk album, and some people back then didn't like that.

  • @hightimesbruce maybe so, but it is one of the definitive albums of the era.

  • @tjfoxx

Oh, definitely, it's one of the greatest albums of all time; it's just that the whole "sellout" thing was due to sound, not their label.

  • The Clash is my favorite vice... Has been for over 33 years, from the debut album thru London Calling... wish they'd never recorded the final album, it was an insult to the body of work... There isn't an iffy track on the entire album... The only band that matters... well at least the only band that matter to me...

For all the haters of Green Day... they are the logical evolution of the Clash, I'm pretty sure Joe would have been a fan... peace out

  • geat production by guy stevens he once said `there are only two phil spectors and i am one of them.

  • intersting song good one. Hey anyone know the name of the song thatw a s ghost track on an 80s album by the clash it was on the album but not listed it's palyed On KQDS in Duluth Mn a lot, thought if anyone knew thye could tell me.

  • @davidgmetoo train in vain?it wasnt listed on my lp of london calling the only radio hit before rock the casbah as far as i know.

  • @musicgardner that's why they didn't list it according to urban legend at the time of release

  • To the opium den and the barroom gin In the Belmont chair playing violins The gambler's face cracks into a grin As he lays down the king of spades But the dealer just stares There's something wrong here, he thinks The gambler is seized and forced to his knees And shot dead He only wanted more time Away from the darkest door But his luck it gave in As the dawn light crept in And he lay on the floor
  • Somebody bought me a Yes album for xmas in 1977 I think it was 'Going for the one' needless to say I immediately jumped the bus into town and swapped it for the 1st clash album, I hadnt heard of them but I thought anything must of been better than Yes. 33 years later my opinion hasnt changed. In my opinion the greatest band ever and LC one of, if not the best album ever recorded.

  • @esseaindanaotinha LC is the best album ever!

  • I don't know why, but this just seems such a powerful song to me. As if the Clash single-handedly put world history together and then sung it. Man, the line 'he only wanted more time away from the darkest door' gives me serious chills.

  • nice to a hear piano on a clash song mick never stopped entertaining

  • Hi. You like Card Cheat. That's good. I have a challenge. Pick up a guitar/piano/banjo/spoon & play. Record yourself playing a song that you have never played before. A new composition. Play back the recording & sing along straight away. Don't write anything down just make up the melody & words as you go along. Then take one hour to edit/make video/cry. Then upload your song & link to my page. I have started you off. If I can do it anybody can. I used 3 chords& my broken old voice.Let's create.X

  • from the hundred years war to the crimea

  • "he only wanted more time away from the darkest door" - speaks to the traps we get ourselves caught in. gotta love mick's emotion and lyrics on this song. love the spector-esque "wall of sound" double-tracking. there's ALOT going on with this track. it would be tough to play live, but i imagine it will happen. we know the components of great music, although it is very difficult to achieve. look at us admiring every minute of this wonderful album. damn, i love everything about the clash.

  • yeah man this song brings a tear to my eye and will keep on doing so. i imagine gettin their sound is tough work, but im happy enuff playing an acoustic version, even with my out of key voice itsstill wonderful

  • is there such thing as a live version?

  • What a gorgeous song; absolutely engaging from start to finish. Quite possibly my favourite song by

    The Clash.

  • this is my favorite song from this album believe it or not .....and im from London

  • Didn't see the comment, but I;m guessing he was talking about the album and not this song particularly. Ragga and ska were never far away from what they were up to. Plus, it was Joe who introduced me to Lee Perry, and Scratch is as deep as the roots run.

  • The only band that matters. From the greatest album ever made. Bless you boys.

  • the clash é o melhor

  • the best thing about London Calling, and the thing that makes it so great, is the fact that its mainly the more obscure songs on the album that steal the show. yes London Calling and Train in Vain are awesome, but the other obscure songs on the album keep you satisfied considering the near 65 minute gap between Calling and Train :)

  • I love how this song is so grand and sincere! Every single song on the album is great!

  • 0:36

  • this is one example of a sleeper, by way of not being a hit but loved by true Clash fans.....

probably some of the best 3:52 ever recorded

  • im a hip hop n rap fan n i love this track since my mate played it to me

  • Comment removed

  • didnt some london kid sample that bass line in a song about jam hot in the big bad city, or something along those lines, possibly early 90s

  • @Ruckerjd01283 in fact many rappers are inspirated by the clash

  • to the guy who who said classic ska/reggae hahahahahaha dude listen to a raggae album cause this is far from it

  • Mick's finest moment. Such emotion delivered in this song.

Awesome. My favourite track from London Calling.

  • i would have said train in vain was his finest moment(live) i fuckin love mick jones man

  • I fuckin love all of em!

  • one of my favorite songs off London Calling.

  • i think the clash made the world alittle better

  • @thechillindude1 I know they made my life A LOT better! I told Mick Jones when I saw him at a Carbon/Silicon gig that he changed my life. He said, "I hope for the better, otherwise you'd be stalking me!" Pretty quick by old Mick.

  • @thechillindude1 A LOT better. ;)

  • @thechillindude1 agree!!!

  • @thechillindude1 a lil better man.... jesus there mygod hehe

  • @thechillindude1 you mean a lot better

  • @thechillindude1 but since joe pasted away, the world became insane......

  • classic ska/reggae

thanks for sharing i love this song

  • nah this is supposed to be like a phil spector "wall of sound" song, not reggae or ska. still a great song though

  • my era Strummer .thanks DIFFERENT

  • I love the fact that (and I'm willing to admit) when I first heard this song I was not into it at all, but now that I've actually given it a chance it's one of my favourites..it really grew on me,as with alot of the songs on London Calling. This song and I'm Not Down really grew on me, and now I just love em.

  • @FrequentlyFried Yeah, it's pretty much the same with me. I just could not understand what was so great about The Clash when I first heard these songs, but now I do without a shadow of a doubt. One of my favorites off London Calling.

  • @FrequentlyFried almost same thing happened with me seems that with my age my taste in music is alot more open still not into lady gaga though lol

  • Thanks Joe Classic

  • Definately my favorite song. Best song by the Clash, in my opinion.

  • I like 'The Clampdown', that's a great song.

  • Same here. They truly are one of the greatest bands to have existed.

  • Check out AsGoodAs90's aka "Ms. Mohawk" channel!

  • But the dealer just stares

Theres something wrong here, he thinks

The gambler is seized and forced to his knees

    And shot dead

Toppers drums are brilliant in this....great song from the best band.

  • AaaaaaaaHhh this brings bk memories, Love the music not so sure about the mixed messages on this page why don't y'alll stop arguing ? peace

  • Masterpiece!

  • Best record ever. Period.

  • R.I.P. Joe Strummers!

  • It's STRUMMER not STRUMMERS..what a dick you must be to post a comment like RIP and not even know the deceased's name.

  • WTF?

Stop being a jerk, they guy made a mistake, so what?

  • To say RIP implies that you knew or cared about the person who died. How much could he care if he doesn't know the deceased's name?

He was a) famous b) his name is spelled correctly in various videos c) it obviously was not a typo...the twat thinks Joe's name was Strummers. Nobody accidentally hits "s" at the end of a name if you know it.

  • Calm down fur fuk sake eh!!

Strummer/Strummers wasn,t even his name!!! It was Mellor.

  • Man, his name wasn't Joe and his last name wasn't strummer. It was 'John Graham Mellor'

    look on the wikipedia.

Stop being so angry with people. I would recomend you to do some yoga or something. \o\

But seriously, I was really sad when he died ._.

such a great person and musician. I was also sad when Joey Ramone died.

  • Thanks for the help. I thought that it was in incredible coincidence that he played guitar and had the name Strummer.

Why should I lighten up? The Clash have enough real fans without having fuckwads jump on the bandwagon and direspect them. The fact is that if this dumbass really were a fan he would know how to spell the man's name..real name or not.

Next this jamtart will be calling Bono "Bomo" and the Edge "The Fudge" or something.

  • Does that mean that Johnny wasn't really "Rotten" and Sid wasn't "Vicious"?. I thought those were their real names too.

  • WTF?!

Of course thats not their names! O.O

Sid's name isnt even sid, its john something.

  • I was being sarcastic. I don't think that Siouxsie Sioux is her real name either.

  • @mapache11 its susan dalion

  • @unclemort1960 ...I know what her real name is, thanks. I was making a point that Joe's real last name was not Strummer. Somebody who pretends to be a fan called him 'Strummers' , and I blasted them for their dumbassedness.

  • Just relax. What's important is that he likes the music, not the artist.

I hate when people say "I love his hair" on the comments of a band. Because their not models, they're musicians. Arctic Monkeys: It doesnt matter if girls think alex is hot, his awesome lyrics skills is what matters. Fuck his looks.

  • lucas...so the artists don't matter, just the music. I'm sure that musicians all over the world would appreciate to hear that. What kind of fucked up idea is that??

  • No, I think I didn't make myself clear. We should care about them because we love their songs and stuff. I was REALLY sad when Joe Strummer died.

But we shouldn't be so obcessed by their looks, or their names or lives. What really matters are their songs.

It doesnt matter if she/he is gay or if she/he uses drugs or who is she/he dating.

If someone likes good music, they don't need to know every detail of the artist's life to be a real fan. That's what I meant /o/

    Peace.
