Sonik heres some advice for avoiding Metal Sonic's attacks:

Sonic: Use his dash move to break the diamonds.

Tails: Use him to destroy the missles Metal Sonic aims at you.

Knuckles: Use him to destroy the giant Egg Fleet Ship Metal Sonic throws at you.

well the tactics for this fight is if using Sonic use his spin dash or tornado to destroy the diamonds, use the light attack when you need it although it sucks up rings Tails for the missiles his thunder shoot is abit better as they attack multiple targets and knuckles fires the balls of fire and use them to destroy the ships like anouther person said Sonic can use the light attack in normal levels to do this use a team blast and as the meter go's down, jumb and press B  near enemies :)

Your doing the whole fight wrong :( You use sonic to break the diamonds. Use tails to knock out the needles and use knuckles to smash the ships that fly at you. An added trick when he freezes time make sure he catches you in a homing attack you will see why.

The light attack can be used by Sonic in the main story after you use team blast. It's used the same way. Also, if sonic is thrown by Tails when he uses thunder shoot, he will use Light attack, but only after the use of team blast.

I was also suprised he didnt expect no rings to show up eventually. That's usually how it is in these. They give you time to collect a lot of rings early on and then make it a race against the clock. Because it would be pointless if you had an infinite supply of rings since super sonic cant die...
