Cigarette companies don't put those little warnings on cigarette packs cause they're nice guys. They have to. Because when smokers with no health insurance and no money go to hospitals, the government has subsidizes that cost. And the government doesn't like to do that when they don't have to. So they made tobacco companies counter-advertise as much as possible. Yet no one is concerned with the millions of deaths alcohol causes every year. And THAT actually is being advertised to kids.

People suck at trying to explain the consequences (addiction/withdrawal) of HARD drugs in school. They just tell you dont smoke weed or you'll end up in jail. truth commercials aren't necessarily anti-smoking and they are definitely not anti smoker. Their purpose is to expose the lies that are the foundation behind the unethical marketing/PR strategies of the tobacco industry. The funding they receive from the tobacco industry is the result of a settlement between tobacco companies and the 46(?) states who sued them over these types of business practices. I think everyone knows the dangers of smoking. If you ask anyone anywhere "is smoking bad for you?" smoker or non smoker, there response 99% of the time will be yes. Its the peoples CHOICE to do it anyway. If you don't smoke, great, you might live longer, or you might get t-boned on your way to work cuz someone wasn't paying attention and ran a red light. If you smoke, you may live shorter, or the same thing could happen to you that happened to the non smoker. People just make different choices.

Sometimes anti-smoking campaigns do promote smoking. I don't think this is the case, but it's important to know it's possible.
For example, if you stress how smoking is bad for teens, then 20-year-olds would think they're old enough to smoke, and teens would want to be as cool as adults and be able to smoke.
If the campaign looks silly, it'll send the message that people who hate smoking are just silly.

The reason you don't see Cigarette commercials is because no television company in their right mind is going to air that on their station, that would hurt their ratings... From what I've seen most of these Truth commercials air during programs geared to younger audiences. There are laws regulating smoking in buildings and even a distance regulation, the people have spoken and many have listened, changes are being made, and the Truth Commercials give us a voice.
Actually it is illegal for tobacco companies to make any form of advertising. They did this in agreeance with "Truth" commercials being used as cigarette advertising. And also the entire "Truth" campaign is funded by tobacco companies. And these are just the hypocritical reason these ad are complete bullshit. But they also use inaccurate statistics, scientific data about 2nd hand smoke that has been thrown out by the Supreme Court. The fact is it's an infringement upon people civil liberties.

Two things. A) there were commercial ads for cigarettes up until 1997 for the US (1988 for Canada). They were taken off the air because they were generally cartoon advertisements, aimed at a younger audience. The TRUTH commercials aim at young adults, not children. and B) the fact that you mention bullets in a vid about smoking shows the kind of person you are. The point made was that bullets kill as do cigarettes. Get over yourself.

Ok, so there's a lot of mention of cigarettes in the media these days, but certainly not in a positive way. Your thinking behind the Truth commercials is equivalent to saying, "So many commercials talking about how suicide is bad...Well, better off myself now..." Dumbass
So while The Truth Campaign is technically funded by big Tobacco, they arent paying for it because they want to--they have to. And the American Legacy Foundation is run by all people who have no connection to Big Tobacco and are personally interested in preventing teen smoking.
Secondly, the Truth campaign has, in fact, been proven to be very effective at preventing teens from smoking- much more so than "just say no" campaigns. Look up the market research yourself if u dont believe me.
ok...in response to "cigarette companies owning the truth campaign", here is the truth. The Truth campaign is run by the American Legacy Foundation, a corporation formed from the money cigarette companies had to pay as a part of the Master Settlement Agreement- you know, the court case where the government sued Big Tobacco for misadviertising and manipulating the amount of nicotine in cigarettes so smokers are more addicted among other things.

A: no...
and another thing, the "annoying" truth people, don't give advertisement for tobacco companies, if you see their commercials, whenever they are in front of a tobacco company thing, they cover up the name and everything, they NEVER mention brands...

Cigarette companies don't put those little warnings on cigarette packs cause they're nice guys. They have to. Because when smokers with no health insurance and no money go to hospitals, the government has subsidizes that cost. And the government doesn't like to do that when they don't have to. So they made tobacco companies counter-advertise as much as possible. Yet no one is concerned with the millions of deaths alcohol causes every year. And THAT actually is being advertised to kids.

People suck at trying to explain the consequences (addiction/withdrawal) of HARD drugs in school. They just tell you dont smoke weed or you'll end up in jail. When we had D.A.R.E. in school it was a joke! Nobody even paid attention because the DARE officer had a stuffed lion he let the kids pass around and play with the whole time he talked. I remember they cut back a lot on the anti drug programs at school, when they found out mentioning it on a near daily basis, ended up getting more kids into drugs.

truth commercials aren't necessarily anti-smoking and they are definitely not anti smoker. Their purpose is to expose the lies that are the foundation behind the unethical marketing/PR strategies of the tobacco industry. The funding they receive from the tobacco industry is the result of a settlement between tobacco companies and the 46(?) states who sued them over these types of business practices. I think everyone knows the dangers of smoking. If you ask anyone anywhere "is smoking bad for you?" smoker or non smoker, there response 99% of the time will be yes. Its the peoples CHOICE to do it anyway. If you don't smoke, great, you might live longer, or you might get t-boned on your way to work cuz someone wasn't paying attention and ran a red light. If you smoke, you may live shorter, or the same thing could happen to you that happened to the non smoker. People just make different choices.

I beg your pardon, but I don't think you understand. Yes, cigarettes are addictive, everyone knows that. So is coffee. So is cocaine. My point is, anybody can quit, no matter how long they've been smoking. My grandfather is an example: he smoked for years, but when my mom was a kid, a commercial came out that denounced cigarettes and said plain and simple that smoking leads to death. My grandfather IMMEDIATELY threw that cigarette into the ashtray and never smoked again.

and not all people live short lives because they smoke/smoked. Look up Jeanne Calment. She passed away in 1997. She quit smoking 2 years before she died. She was the last person alive at the time to meet Vincent Van Gogh. She died at 122. Most people that lived pass 100 were/are at one time smokers. And they usually quit pass the life expectancy. But Truth wont talk about this because it goes against their agenda. People just die from random things. Blaming cigarettes is inaccurate by large.

Sometimes anti-smoking campaigns do promote smoking. I don't think this is the case, but it's important to know it's possible.
For example, if you stress how smoking is bad for teens, then 20-year-olds would think they're old enough to smoke, and teens would want to be as cool as adults and be able to smoke.
If the campaign looks silly, it'll send the message that people who hate smoking are just silly.
It's a known strategy in tobacco companies funded campaigns, btw.

The reason you don't see Cigarette commercials is because no television company in their right mind is going to air that on their station, that would hurt their ratings... From what I've seen most of these Truth commercials air during programs geared to younger audiences. There are laws regulating smoking in buildings and even a distance regulation, the people have spoken and many have listened, changes are being made, and the Truth Commercials give us a voice.

Truth's commercials, website, entire CAMPAIGN is chock-full of statements such as, "Cigarettes contain rat poison," "cigarettes cause cancer," "cigarettes are designed to be addictive," "cigarettes kill 1 out of every 3 people who smoke them."
There are a lot of people who do and say stupid things in the world, but NOBODY is THIS stupid, people - this guy can be nothing else but a pawn of Big Tobacco who comes here to try to muddy the waters and control the damage caused by the Truth.

In fact the smoking has gone down in youth since the commericals have been around. After the tobacco companies lost a major law suit in the nineties, part of the settlement went into funding truth, which is completely independent of the industry. Since the program started, there's been a 22% drop in youth smoking. Tobacco companies have their own youth anti-smoking programs, but truth is not one of them.
If you don't like Truth, fine, but don't go around making stuff up when there are a lot of people who work very hard on the truth campaign because they really care.

I dont necessarily agree with exactly everything that you said here but there is some truth to it. Theres an old saying "theres no such thing as bad publicity" and as someone who works for an undisclosed tobacco company I can tell you in all honestly that they very much so believe in that saying. As far as "truth" working together with tobacco companies, I personaly don't think its going on. But I do know that the tobacco companies have a lot of money and anyone can be bought. its a possibility.

I completely agree. Take for instance the "magical amount" commercial. I know they're trying to be sarcastic or what have you, but that's not the easiest thing for young kids to pick up on. All young kids see when watching that is a bunch of cartoon characters singing about how there's not enough nicotine in cigarettes to hurt you and it's done so in a very catchy and fun tune.

Two things. A) there were commercial ads for cigarettes up until 1997 for the US (1988 for Canada). They were taken off the air because they were generally cartoon advertisements, aimed at a younger audience. The TRUTH commercials aim at young adults, not children. and B) the fact that you mention bullets in a vid about smoking shows the kind of person you are. The point made was that bullets kill as do cigarettes. Get over yourself.

I understand completely. (: I don't look down on those who smoke because I grew up with it. I do look down on those who don't respect the fact that I don't smoke and would rather not have to deal with smoking in a public place or in my own home. Don't forget because of these commercials that alot of teens not only get a catchy tune they learn the truth of the ingredience and things about smoking. Also when they shoot the commercials don' most of the companies block there name out=O? Being an aunt with teens i find the commercials helpful and i even talk to my nices and nephews about the commercial personally i think tv needs more commercials like theirs. A No-nonsense way of learning. Something kids these days can understand.

So while The Truth Campaign is technically funded by big Tobacco, they arent paying for it because they want to--they have to. And the American Legacy Foundation is run by all people who have no connection to Big Tobacco and are personally interested in preventing teen smoking.
Secondly, the Truth campaign has, in fact, been proven to be very effective at preventing teens from smoking- much more so than "just say no" campaigns. Look up the market research yourself if u dont believe me.

The Truth campaign is run by the American Legacy Foundation, a corporation formed from the money cigarette companies had to pay as a part of the Master Settlement Agreement- you know, the court case where the government sued Big Tobacco for misadviertising and manipulating the amount of nicotine in cigarettes so smokers are more addicted among other things.
