They just really loved scifi and anime, then made a great bit of animation. What kills me is, if you watch the crowd scene at the end frame by frame, there's movement and perspective change. Anybody else would have made one piece of art and scroll from left to right. Subject, animation, music, all just amazing.

I want to do my own version of this with video game characters but I have no idea where to start. I can't imagine how these guys pulled this off with traditional animation in their late teens. Holy shit.
I don't care what anybody says...every time I watch this, it just fills me with joy. A bunch of guys made an anime in their basement just for it to be a convention opener, and they became Gainax.
@rorymacve I wonder if they did break copyright law. The characters aren't on the screen for more than two frames in most cases. It might be considered fair use. If you can get the convention people and ELO to sign off on the film, it can be released easily to DVD. And I'm sure the 8mm film can be properly scanned for an even better copy.
@egdeltur666 It's the opening credits for a japanese SF convention held in 1983. The amateur crew who produced it went pro, forming the core of GAINAX.
I've been watching anime since Prince Planet and I've only just seen this last year. Still dazzled.

Copyright Infringement: The Animation. And it was great.
Internet myth pretty much states that it was Playboy, ironically, that blocked the release.

@egdeltur666 Were do you think the Easter-Bunny works when its not easter? Saving the World and fighting against aliens that is =).
Or do you REALLY think that it was LUKE who defeated Darth Vader? Or that it was the POWER RANGERS who defeated Evil Megazord?
