  • My problem is wnen i see these vids i need to watch the triple crown again and again and then the otherr races and i cant stop ,,,,,i cant watch the movie anymore for now but i have these vids,,,,Go Red,,,,

  • luv the dick butkus reference lol

  • 2:24 never forget it , I mean NEVER!

  • *shiver*

  • the actuall footage AWESOME !

  • " I believe Dick Butkis could have ridden this horse and won". "perhaps they could have ridden double"..........

  • was almost 40 when sec. ran the belmont. my wife and i were jumping up and down on the sofa as he crossed the finish line.

    nothing more exciting.

  • "I suppose you can't really be embarrassed by being beaten by the greatest horse in the last century".

  • Certainly one of the greatest moments in the history of American sports!

  • By far, the greatest horse of all time.

  • Forget Tiger Woods, Bob Beamon, Michael Phelps, Even Dimaggio's record, 2:24 will never be broken.

  • He's not even blowing hard. Incredible. Thank you so much for posting this, a horse for the history books. One person couldn't understand what he saw. Horse from Heaven. Thank you to Team Secretariat.

  • I couldn't catch that horse if I were in a car! What a performance. A record that still stands 39 years later! Amazing.

  • i like this version a lot, clearer

  • Still funny to hear them wondering (before the race, of course) whether Secretariat can run a mile and half.

  • SECRETARIAT,the legendary horse.

  • Proud to be a Virginian just like Secretariat. :-) I wish I could have seen this in person. And I wish we had a modern day story like this one. We sure could use it. Until then, this will do. So inspiring.

  • For those of us who saw this race as it happened Secretariat was greatness in action. Just his royal name stands for magnificence alone like the name of every great champion. We must not forget the people behind this great horse, Mrs Tweedy his owner, Lucian Lauren his trainer, Eddy Sweat his handler, and Ronny Turcotte his jockey. It takes a great team to handle such a special athlete and that is what Team Secretariat was.

  • Inspiring performance. One of the greatest athletic performances on any level, any sport!! Once that will live in infamy!

  • I just simply adore Secretariat and he will always remain my favorite. I have to admit that Sham was great as well and I guess that if Secretariat wouldn't have been there he would have won the triple crown. His misfortune was just that he was born in the same year as Sec who was just the most terrific racehorse ever and we will probably never see a horse like him again...

  • " he's all alone "

  • Greatest thing ever in sports, I think. Although Tiger at the Masters and U.S. Open is damned close.

  • TV productions were so much simpler then. And so much better.

  • The greatest performance by a horse ever. No horse will ever duplicate this effort.

  • Secretariat was such an amazing horse

  • I got to pet Secretariat when he was a yearling and Riva Ridge when he was a 2 year old. How I wish I took a picture.

  • @TheVagolfer : I wish you had too...home for me is Caroline County and would have loved to see those shots...

  • We all love you Secretariat i mean Big Red you will always be in our hearts and never forgotten. Especially in my heart.

  • wow

  • when they make movies about moments in history, they usually embellish a little (sometimes a lot). They didn't have to with this story.

  • this is how i will remember Secretariat: "blazing along" "Secretariat has accomplished the unbelievable task of breaking the mile and a half record by 2 & 3/5ths seconds. That is a record that may stand forever! Almost unbelievable!" and the almost comical "And then it's such a problem to count lengths from that point..." lol :-) If you are someone who likes to believe in the extraordinary, this horse is a great affirmation.

  • my dad used to take me to the horse races as a kid, where he would point out what made the best race horses.............he would take me back to the stalls, where he would study them before betting..........i loved those days. This was back in the mid - late 70's / early 80's..........Not sure the time-line of Secretariat, but I can't help but wonder if I ever saw Secretariat..........I was young, so I'm not sure. What I can say, is that this horse brings tears to my eyes. Once in a lifetime.

  • he is by far, the greatest horse of all time, I ever saw race.

  • Of course everyone was speechless after this race. They could not fully grasp the significance of Secretariat's incredible performance, nor could they find its proper place in relative historical terms. People struggled with this until finally being taken by the realization of how truly momentous an event this was. Then it was clear that Secretariat was a giant amongst giants, his performance not diminished, yet embellished with the passage of time - a greatness not yet seen again.

  • "He is Moving like a TREMENDOUS Machine."

  • You will never see anything better than this. Ever. Period.

  • Pegasus.

  • @schnitzie13 Yep. Simple and to that point. Jerry Izenberg said "I believed in Pegasus that day 'cause I saw him." And anyone would say the same thing. Simply put, he deserves to be amongst the greatest human athletes of all time. He was that great.

  • i like the way secretariat walks up to the gates and just stands there like "well i am here-lets go"

  • I person disliked this video, er, missed Secretariat's post time. :)

  • Poor Twice a Prince. I felt so sorry for him. You could see the strain toward the end.

  • Sham didn't like the video.

  • the thing that gets me, that always gets me, where the tears start to fall, and I get emotional, every time, beginning in '73 when I was 10 years old watching this, is when Red hits the stretch, the camera pulls back, and you see the fists of the people in the grandstand, and the arms of the people waving, as Red promenades alone down the stretch. The fists, the arms waving, the clenched fists of the people waving. Gets me every time.

Thank you Red. Gone, never forgotten.

  • @giles422 i was 10 also, and was in a room full of naysayers smoking their cigars and shushing me. Secretariat shushed them, and put a smile on my face which has never gone away! :-)

  • I cry whenever I see secretariat! What a Magnificent horse!

  • 2:24 speechless!

  • For anyone out there that says a racehorse is not an athlete .......

  • their legit will never ever be another horse like him

  • Big Red, the best, and it was a better time in america, big red will always be 1 to me

  • I was 8 years old when Big Red won the tripple crown; and, it was Secretariat's magnificent performance here at the Belmont that helped seal my love for horse racing forever. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • big red 's belmont was one of the greatest sports victories. turcotte was looking for competition big red could have run another mile and won by 60 lengths

  • That was supercool to watch. Thank you Cf.

I wish i could step into a '73 Ford Maverick now to get my grocery.

    Big Red, The Perfect Horse.

  • i wasnt a horsefan then but something happen , i saw the movie sacretariat , now i can't stop looking for videos of htis horse. I wonder how close to reality was the movie?

  • love this reminds me of my mom and dad now both gone watching w/ me and seemd to me a better time in america.

  • Secretariat was thinking "I am ready to show how great I am"

  • We should all also thank Mrs Tweedy for believing in him and not giving up on him. and he was and is the GREATEST HORSE EVER

  • Secretariat's win in the Belmont was after all the talk about how he would not hold up through 1 1/2 miles. The experts considered this race too long for him. Final victory by 31 lengths. Wow

  • I'm not going to lie. I nearly got choked up watching this race. There is no controversy in Secretariat's success. He made it very clear on the track who's the best, and he was. Thanks for the video!

  • @casterTroy1941 you're not alone, most people do choke and even sit and cry even sob. I did the first time I saw it here in 2006 after almost 40 years.

  • To me, the biggest triumph of this horse's breeding is that his legs held up under all that weight, all that muscle. He really was a perfect athlete as well as a rock star. I've never forgotten seeing him for the first time in the Derby - and he only got better. This race was almost a thumbing of the nose - I think you could have put Man'O'War and Citation there and he would still have pulled away from them like they were standing still.

  • "He is moving like a Tremendous Machine!"- Still gets me every time!

  • @Stalicone It does the same to me. Just amazing!

  • @Stalicone I too LOVE that during the race. He was like a tremendous machine!

  • Ron Turcotte didn't even need the whip that great day.

  • happy anniversary, secretariat.

  • Big Red......

  • Great video! Being born in the early 70's I was only a baby and I didn't know anything about secretariat and the victories this talented horse has won. Your videos have allow me to enjoy the history and to understand this magnificent horse. Thank you for uploading!

  • 2:24....................im a beliver!

  • I can't tell you the number of times I've watched Secretariat win the Belmont. It still brings tears to my eyes. I saw the race in 1973 on my little B&W TV. It's still a thrill 38 years later.

  • not that he needed it, but i wonder if it would have been counter productive had the jockey used the whip down the stretch or would have he done better than the2:24 he posted ?

  • HE'S MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE

Possibly the greatest declaration in sports history.

  • After all these years, I still get goosebumps. I've loved this horse since I was a kid. Other girls had posters of the boy stars of the time - I had Big Red. Thanks so much for posting! Wonderful.

  • A great horse, a great feat....wonder if we'll ever see a Triple Crown winner again.

  • I love when they put the flowers over his shoulders people just have to reach out and try to touch him as he passes, as if he were a deity.

  • Not that it would have mattered on that day...but only a 5 horse field in the Belmont? It's usually three times that size these days, again, not that it would have mattered if there were 100 horses running that afternoon.

  • @ccrosbie33 you are thinking of the derby, the belmont usually have around 10 horses

  • "I believe Dick Butkus could have ridden this horse today and won!"

    Ha ha ha ha!

  • @Zayrina lol Very true!

  • @Zayrina

Isn't that something? I love it! But, I still think it's an "under-statement", for I believe a Sumo wrestler could have ridden Secretariat and won on that day. May be not by 31 lengths, but 3 1/2 lengths only.

  • Yes, I too haven't seen this since I was watching it on the T.V. as a kid...and I never forgot it. It is so interesting a lot of explaining and history mentioned that you don't see on T.V. with the races anymore. Shame.

  • Thank you for the video clip, being a full 10 mins from the TV broadcast takes me back to the very moment I watched Big Red win this race on my Grandparents black & white TV in 1973, Talk about re-living the moment !!!! Thank you S.L.Hancock

  • Still possibly one of the most beautiful athletic achievements one can ever watch.

  • I am proud to say that I live in the same home town as Ron Turcotte. Small town in New Brunswick Canada I was three years old when he won triple crown. I am amazed of his accomplishments good job Ron and Big Red!!!!!

  • He just did what came natural to him. Amazing. What an athlete! He had It!

  • that is a record that may stand...forever.

just average 37.5 mph for 1.5 miles. no sweat. :-D

  • Secretariat's like Michael Jordan. Because of him so many legends didn't win a championship.

  • @5:20 that horse looks like he's flying. Im pretty sure he would if he has wings....lmao.

  • I was too young when this historical race was run to be aware of what was occurring on the track. As an adult I have watched Big Red's Triple Crown races over and over. Yet, no matter how often I witness this incredible Belmont, my throat tightens and my eyes tear up. Chic Anderson's call as this race unfolds never fails to affect me. No horse ever, even today, has been equal to the great Secretariat. Thank you cf1970, for the gift of being able to witness this unrepeatable performance.

  • 2:24 still stands.

  • I saw this race. I was 13. I felt that he would win, but he just kept going! Running and running! None of us could believe it! Ever since, every 3 crown, I always hope, before my life has ended, I will see this, and have that same thrill. But, deep in my heart, I know I never will. I will go to my grave with that memory, and I will share it with all I can when the subject comes up. I'm very lucky to have lived to seen this.

  • This race always makes me smile. Secretariat is my most favorite horse in the world. Thank you so much for posting this magnificent horse.

  • "He is moving like a tremendous Machine!!" (it hits me every time I hear it.) What a miracle horse!

  • At 5:21 on this tape, exactly one second before he reaches the 5/8 mile pole, he achieves Perfect Stride. The only thing missing is an audible *CRACK*, of some ethereal chain being snapped: Turcotte wasn't his jockey anymore, but rather his companion rider.

  • "Secretariat is all alone!" That was true both literally and figuratively. On a different plain, level, class — all by himself.

As Charles Hatton of the Daily Racing Form wrote: "His only point of reference is himself."

I'm blessed to have lived during the reign of Secretariat. We'll never see his like again.

  • i saw him win the Canadian International in 1973 and I still have the ticket..

all it said was " Big Red". greatest champion ever

  • I was at the Belmont that day. The crowd expected Secretariat to win. As the race progressed they realized they were watching a legend - that's why the crowd was going nuts. I mean a $2 winning ticket paid 20 cents so nobody was surprised by the win.

  • I was there that day - dragged to the track as a kid by my father and grandfather. I could not have cared less about Secretariat or the Triple Crown. Everyone at Belmont that day knew Secretariat would win - a reason he paid 20 cents.

However - once the race began and Secretariat pulled ahead - people realized that not only would Secretariat wine but that they were watching the making of a legend..

  • incredible--thanks as always

  • One of the greatest athletes I ever saw. All three races were amazing . . . and the performance in the was absolutely stunning !

  • easy goer ran 2:26 and that's not even close!!

  • thanks so much for this --it is truly incredible....amazing video

  • No horse will ever beat this record for 1 1/2 miles - ever.

  • What broadcaster today would react to this feat with, "Well, 3,000 yrs ago when they brought the first horses out of the valleys of Turkistan, the Emperor of China called them 'Heavenly Horses' when he saw them, and this was a 'Heavenly Horse' "...

  • Listen to the crowd when they're on the back stretch - Secretariat stopped racing Sham and started racing the clock. Then gravity!

  • 1 word....AMAZING!!!

  • Poor Sham.. This race broke his heart.. He never ran again :/

  • @horshooer

Your right,Sham gave his all in that race.Several days after the Belmont Stakes a hairline fracture of the cannon bone was discovered in one of his legs and he was retired to stud and went on to a successful breeding program.Sham died at the

age of 23 on April 3,1993

  • @horshooer The reason Sham didn't race again was prior to his next meeting with Secretariat after the Belmont, a hairline fracture in the leg was discovered.

The Belmont didn't break his heart, Secretariat broke him in half.

  • @horshooer When you consider that Sham's effort in the Derby also broke the old Derby record, that no record was set in the Preakness, and that he fell back so far in this race--it appears that each loss to Secretariat took something out of him. I didn't know that he never ran again, but it doesn't surprise me.

  • @drewby613 S did set a record at 1:53 2/5, Andrew Beyer had come up w/a formula using track conditions, previous races and times that day, and MADE prediction 1:53 2/5 wld be S's time. Then you had 3 DRF guys doing hand clocking fm 2 or 3 different vantage points, and ALL timed race at 1:53 2/5. Amazingly, they had let a literal hoard of fans cross track near timer before race, one threw a soda or beer can. In 1999 10 yrs after S's died, MD Racing Commission gave him his record.

  • @horshooer I heard Sham produced some good offspring. Is this true?

  • When he crossed the finish line he could have galloped into the heavens!. Be blessed those who were there that day, you were witness to something very special..we will never see his like again. To all those associated with this great horse, "thank-you".

  • Some of these trainers today want to "Alter" the Triple Crown by either more time between races,or adjusting the lengths. That will just make a "Paper" champion, and cheapen the triple crown! Do it like the rest of the GREAT ONES!!!

  • Great! Astounding! Supernatural! The first time I have seen the whole broadcast!

THANK YOU! Loved the way the one guy said "Dick Butkus could have ridden this horse and won...PRICELESS!!!

  • This telecast from 37 years ago is light years superior to today's technofluff sports coverage. With less bells, whistles, flash and datablitz, it's far more compelling, informative, entertaining and memorable television.

  • I am firmly convinced to this day that Secretariat was trying to fly off the track and into the air during the Belmont. That was his ultimate goal in life, I think, to fly.

  • This was the first time I ever saw both my parents cry in front of me. They were so overwhelmed by Secretariat's victory, and the absolute perfection he displayed in winning the race that they couldn't hold back their emotions. My dad looked at me and said, "Don't you EVER forget what you just saw because you'll NEVER see it again."

  • Wow...I love this great coverage...no Celebrities..just the horses. Notice the casual warm up, the relaxed, Euro-style loading process and quiet gates. Then..the magnificent Secretariat. The horse, according to Steve Haskins and his personal photos, loved to play fetch with a stick! Ahhhhhh...such wonderful coverage and thoughtful commentary!

  • Thus, that Sham did not win the Triple Crown himself, merely by happenstance of birth in the same year as King Secretariat, is something that forever...hurts. His name should've been pronounced with an "ah" to his name..."Shahm"...because that horse was -never- a sham, and gave literally more than his all, in a Belmont effort that was as 'doomed' from the start as Sir Barton's match race with Man O' War was.

  • @VampireYoshi I share your heartfelt feelings. Dear Sham was a tired horse who never shld've run this. Jockey behind Sham said he cld see Sham's legs start to get rubbery near 3/4 pole. That's when Secretariat pulled away for last time. Pincay sensed Sham's distress and, thank God, stopped pushing him. That's why he fell far back so quickly. Bill Nack describes it in 8 pages in his bio. If not for Secretariat, Sham wld've won the TC. He actually also broke the Derby record.... very sad

  • @VampireYoshi I agree with all my heart VYoshi, it will forever.... hurt. I think Pancho Martin is still alive. I wld like to think he sees all the caring comments that are posted by the lovely Sham... with his dark sable coat, glimmering bronze and red in the sun. I like that Penny approached Martin before one of the races in the barn and petted Sham.

  • Despite all the things that make me savor this broadcast, event, etc...one thing makes it something less than perfect. As great as Secretariat will forever be...Sham is among the top ten, maybe top five, race horses of all time. Anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves, and I don't care if he didn't win a Triple Crown race. Without Secretariat, Sham is one of only three sub-2:00 winners of the Derby, and his margin running behind Secretariat's Preakness record was likewise the same.

  • These posts of Big Red are just great.

So much time has past that I don't think people really appreciate how great this triple crown was. It had been 25 yrs since Citation and some thought it would never happen again.

Listen to, "he is moving like a tremendous machine" and I still get goose bumps.

And this performance is what stamps him as The Greatest!!!

    Tremendous!!!

  • what i loved so much about the coverage back then was that they showed the action as it happened...not so many fluff pieces showing secretariat visiting hospitals and talking about his homelife, etc...

a little background and narrative are great, but let us see and hear and observe for ourselves the full experience of the day, the moment, itself...

    thanks for posting.

  • What a fitting reward for Chic Anderson to be able to call this historic event. Funny how there ain't many boos coming in now, eh?

  • one of the most amazing performances in the history of ALL sports

  • It's amazing how Secretariat absolutely broke the will of Sham in this race.

  • Every time I watch this reinforces just how MONUMENTAL an event this was not just in terms of horse racing, but as the rarest of displays when something on the fringes of supernatural occurs that pushes the bounds of what is possible. This is beyond greatness. This is a dream materialized.

    Mitch

  • We are so very privileged to have witnessed in our lifetimes such a great performance by such a magnificent animal. Secretariat embodies and defines greatness.

    Mitch

  • First crop Stallion, Wildcat Heir, just tied a northern hemisphere record for 39 wins. Would anyone like to guess who his great, great grandaddy is??? Some horse named Secretariat...

  • What gets me after alll these years is how eloquent these folks manag tp sound before, during and after the race. These were people who loved the sport and talking about it, and could do so in an entertaining way that grabs you by the brain too....

  • Shivers down my spine while watching...

Big Red crushed em all! Sham tried something, but he found out in the end there was no use in trying, he was a little suicidal. Wowee! Amazing.

It looks like Red prefers white roses. ;-)

  • The comments are perceptive and interesting. Thank you.

  • anne its just me ha he!! I hope we see another triple crown winner but i hope it is in the hands of modest people like secretariet was i think thats what makes it special also

  • After initial urging, Ron Turcotte never asked Secretariat for speed. Ron has stated that had he been asked, he could have run even faster.

Thanks for posting this for all to see. On this fine day in June 1973, this performance affirmed Secretariat's status as legend among the giants in racing.

    Mitch

  • WOW ! I was in High School when this happened and we-as kids!-followed the progression of this magnificient horse. I don't think we'll see another one like him in our lifetime. But OMG-he gave us ALL something to cheer about in those darkening days of 1973. Thank you so much for posting this!

  • I agree; there will never be another one like Big Red.

    You're very welcome!

  • @libralady1010 Amen to that!! '73 was especially rough in NYC.

  • Piece of history...thanks for posting

  • You're welcome. Thanks for the comments..
