dragonscales Only John McD can sing Danny boy like that- he makes my heart so full- he sounds like my parents- Heliosatar how fortunate that John McD sung at your uncles funeral I would so love to have him him sing the last rose of summer for my mom you are blessed and I am sorry truly- for your loss
Although an Irish song I love it, especially when sung so well....we are after all C(k)eltic brothers......and there is also a strong connection between Scotland and Italy as well......!! Am really enjoying your uploads Paola!!!!
There is more than you could guess! :) I live in North Italy, near Turin, and Celts people lived here long ago! On Wikipedia there's a page about Chieri (from the Celtic "Kari"), my hometown, but it's only in Italian language :(
Anyway, if you would like to take a virtual walk in Chieri, look for my video titled "Karrea" :)
Thanks a lot for watching and commenting this video, I'm happy you enjoyed it!!!
Over the past several weeks I have been listening to many, many versions of this song, from choirs to Elvis to Celtic Woman, and this is, by far, the best I have heard. Rich and pure, not pretentious or forced, exactly the way I imagine it should be sung. Absolutely beautiful.
@boneymaroni28 Thank you so much for your poem- I have put it in my "favorites" and shall enter it into my Jounals about our family ( with you name of course) I felt safe with my pop there- miss the feeling. God Bless and Keep you. Mary wilde4445
Thank you for replying LadyGreyCarolyn. You may like some of the songs on my list of favourites on my website. I started with my top 30 but am heading towards my top 100 songs because I keep remembering others that I really like. All the best. And thanks again. Stan Pinnegar
Wonderful song and a wonderfully rich-voiced singer. I like Jim Reeves singing Danny Boy as well, but oh my goodness, Jim Reeves leaves out a whole, beautiful verse. Thank you so much.
Only when I became a father of two boys and those boys had grown to men, have I come to really cherish this song. One of the most precious songs ever written and recorded ever.
"...and i shall sleep in peace until you come to me."
Wonderful rendition of this wonderful song. I always loved to hear Jim Reeves singing this but John has an edge on him i think. It must be the Scottish/Irish connection. There is a beautiful lilt to his voice. Thank you so much for sharing this.as an expat did find it difficult to find such treasures until i found YouTube.
@LadyGreyCarolyn Thank you, my dear, I am likewise moved every time I hear this song. It puts a lump in my throat, and tears in my eyes...as I think of him. Thank you so much for posting!
Perhaps the definitive interpretation of this classic. John has an ability to interpret music. This song should be sung in a "laid-back" way, see the work's origins. Other tenors BLAST it at you - with a full orchestra. John's distinctive voice is always, clear, resonant - he doesn't need to enhance it with increased volume and a large backup band. I have heard him sing this song acapella, but I can't remember where. (I don't know of any other vocalist who would even THINK of trying that).
Thanks so much for your detailed info about the song and the way it should be performed... I don't really know other versions, I posted this one because I like John's songs so I'm trying to post all what I can of his music, but indeed he has an amazing voice, and he makes even more beautiful all the songs he sings! :)
There are no words to express the emotion this has stirred in me. I have been listening to some of John's songs on youtube this morning. This and "My Old Man" have brought tears to my eyes. John has a magnificent voice. God bless him.
Thanks very much for watching my video and commenting on it! :))) Yes, he has a very beautiful and emotional voice, I like a lot the way he performs the songs... and God bless you too!
i have the battlefield of green from where this was. it is a great loss for us that it taken out of circulation for some reasons. that was how i was exposed to mcdermott the first time. it has been a great pleasure since then. thank you so much.

You have said it so well: "not pretetious or forced. " McDermott's dynamics are perfect. Forceful and emphatic as
required, but oh so tender on the high notes. Yes, "absolutely beautiful. " I am now 80 years old, but sang
Danny Boy as a solo when I was still a soprano choir boy .
It has always been one of my favourites.

The first man I ever loved
I have seen strength like an oak in a storm
I have felt gentleness like a golden summer dawn
I have heard laughter like a splashing waterfall
I have felt protection like a shelter all around
All from a life that gave me life
All from my Father's Love
I miss you Papa xo

FYI, I live in Buffalo, NY and John has drove down the Q.E.W (about an hour drive) and done informal concerts here.
