  • John McDermott was at my uncle's funeral and sung this in the church. It will always have special meaning to me.

  • @heliostellar

This a sad but beautiful memory... but I think it's a good thing when we link to a song some special (joyful or sad) moment of your life.

  • Although an Irish song I love it, especially when sung so well....we are after all C(k)eltic brothers......and there is also a strong connection between Scotland and Italy as well......!! Am really enjoying your uploads Paola!!!!

  • @04jambo1956

There is more than you could guess! :) I live in North Italy, near Turin, and Celts people lived here long ago! On Wikipedia there's a page about Chieri (from the Celtic "Kari"), my hometown, but it's only in Italian language :(

Anyway, if you would like to take a virtual walk in Chieri, look for my video titled "Karrea" :)

Thanks a lot for watching and commenting this video, I'm happy you enjoyed it!!!

  • Over the past several weeks I have been listening to many, many versions of this song, from choirs to Elvis to Celtic Woman, and this is, by far, the best I have heard. Rich and pure, not pretentious or forced, exactly the way I imagine it should be sung. Absolutely beautiful.

  • @Demonde25

I'm really happy you enjoyed this version so much, so thanks you for watching and commenting on my video!!! :-)

  • @Demonde25

You have said it so well: "not pretetious or forced. " McDermott's dynamics are perfect. Forceful and emphatic as

required, but oh so tender on the high notes. Yes, "absolutely beautiful. " I am now 80 years old, but sang

Danny Boy as a solo when I was still a soprano choir boy .

It has always been one of my favourites.

  • @gronker4

Thanks very very much also for your comment here!!!

  • @Demonde25 I'm crying- thank you

  • The first man I ever loved

I have seen strength like an oak in a storm

I have felt gentleness like a golden summer dawn

I have heard laughter like a splashing waterfall

I have felt protection like a shelter all around

All from a life that gave me life

    All from my Father's Love

    I miss you Papa xo

  • Thank you for replying LadyGreyCarolyn. You may like some of the songs on my list of favourites on my website. I started with my top 30 but am heading towards my top 100 songs because I keep remembering others that I really like. All the best. And thanks again. Stan Pinnegar

  • Wonderful song and a wonderfully rich-voiced singer. I like Jim Reeves singing Danny Boy as well, but oh my goodness, Jim Reeves leaves out a whole, beautiful verse. Thank you so much.

  • @MrGrandad4

Thanks you for watching and leaving your comment on my video! :-) I'm happy you liked this version!!!

  • Never ceases to amaze one, whatever John sings close your eyes and you find yourself within the song.

  • @jackford1918

I think so too: he has a breath-taking way to perform these songs!

Thanks a lot for watching and commenting!!! :)

Thanks very much for your beautiful comment! :-) I'm happy you enjoyed the video!

  • Only when I became a father of two boys and those boys had grown to men, have I come to really cherish this song. One of the most precious songs ever written and recorded ever.

"...and i shall sleep in peace until you come to me."

  • @truckereleven

Thanks very much for sharing your feelings - and for watching my video!

God Bless you and your family!!!! ^_^

  • eccezionali foto che accompagnano una musica emozionante!

    ciao

  • @stelladoriente1

    Grazie, sei molto gentile!

E' molto bello fotografare le nuvole, la loro varietà è davvero infinita. :)

  • Wonderful rendition of this wonderful song. I always loved to hear Jim Reeves singing this but John has an edge on him i think. It must be the Scottish/Irish connection. There is a beautiful lilt to his voice. Thank you so much for sharing this.as an expat did find it difficult to find such treasures until i found YouTube.

  • @baycast

Thanks to you very much for all your comments (here and on the other videos)! ^_^

  • @lggriffin

Thanks very much for sharing your Dad's life, I was moving by your words...

  • @LadyGreyCarolyn Thank you, my dear, I am likewise moved every time I hear this song. It puts a lump in my throat, and tears in my eyes...as I think of him. Thank you so much for posting!

  • @lggriffin I'm impressed by your father by your description and never met him. Clearly his memory is alive and well in you. Be in peace...

  • @heliostellar It sure is! Thank you much...and God Bless you!

  • If I can find a typical "bad version", I will send you the address.

FYI, I live in Buffalo, NY and John has drove down the Q.E.W (about an hour drive) and done informal concerts here.

  • Perhaps the definitive interpretation of this classic. John has an ability to interpret music. This song should be sung in a "laid-back" way, see the work's origins. Other tenors BLAST it at you - with a full orchestra. John's distinctive voice is always, clear, resonant - he doesn't need to enhance it with increased volume and a large backup band. I have heard him sing this song acapella, but I can't remember where. (I don't know of any other vocalist who would even THINK of trying that).

  • @Urineculture

Thanks so much for your detailed info about the song and the way it should be performed... I don't really know other versions, I posted this one because I like John's songs so I'm trying to post all what I can of his music, but indeed he has an amazing voice, and he makes even more beautiful all the songs he sings! :)

  • @Urineculture: in his cd titled 'battlefields of green' danny boy a capella

  • Aye , John does much credit to this song...

  • @savantleo

Thanks a lot to you also for watching my video and for leaving your comment! ^_^ I'm happy you enjoyed it!!!

  • There are no words to express the emotion this has stirred in me. I have been listening to some of John's songs on youtube this morning. This and "My Old Man" have brought tears to my eyes. John has a magnificent voice. God bless him.

  • Lovely version, however today I heard a version from him " a capella " ( just lyrics_ no muzic) , Stunning, but can't find it

  • @frabu29
