DanteFox where do you think they got the idea for the calypso is from the kelvinator. Many of the new designs are just variations on the original themes from years ago.
These washing machine videos are taking on new proportions....the on screen words, the still shots, the dramatic music....*sigh*...I just can't compete.
Even though it looked like the agitator was having a major spaz attack at times, this machine was one notch up compared to a GM Frigidaire on overflow rinsing.
@jetcone Probably because the technology couldn't compete with the simple but effective wash system on Kenmores and Whirlpools which became the standard.
@BlogShag As i said in the other video, its an orbital... and you can see how well they turn over here when they fill up after the magic minute. They're amazing machines but so hard to keep running and no one but Kelvinator was interested in this technology. Even they stopped using it by the late 60's :)
Reminds me of my Grandma's 1963 Kelvinator. Hers was less fancy -- no see-through lid, convemtional knob timer, but it did have a lint filter on the agitator. As a child, I loved to watch it in action, but it threw way too much water everywhere with the lid open!
I was thoroughly intrigued by washers from that period I was just knee high, they were fascinating and scary.I'd stand on a stool to see the action as my mother washed.I was interested in seeing the type of machines relatives & friends had when I was visiting. I'm surprised to learn Kelvinator is still in business marketed under another name,I bypassed the lid switch on the Maytag we have now just so it would be like those days (working with the lid up) This is a beautiful machine nice job !
This is a awsome washing machine. Why can't they make machines like this today. I love the overflow and the splashaway the best but it's all good. To bad they didn't make one with a bigger tub like frigidaire did!
Those conical-agitator marvels were some of the BEST machines! Only one family we knew had a 1966 version with no window. It's so funny this machine has the "Time-Line" like my Aunt's 1954 Norge! Another aunt had an old, OLD Easy twin-tub spindrrer, with the "force-cup" tower agitator. THAT was a sight to behold! Also, what ever happened to the Hamilton washers??? We had one-a nice 1968, and I still have the operating manual!
Still my favorite and most longed-for machine...thank you so much for a wonderfully nostalgic post. (I used to sneak in to a neighbor's garage and watch their Leonard® (a Kelvinator with a psuedonym) every chance I got. I can still smell the detergent. (1960's Rinso Blue)
So, if it's an AMC, do you think it is a Raymond Loewy design?

@ryan69me ... I thought the very same thing, although this one actually seems to work, unlike the calypso...
