I love this song so much. It bears such strong meaning. I don't like any of Steve Earle's other music and I typically despise country music as a whole, but this is amazing. I'm thinking about getting 'lonely are the free' tattooed somewhere. I really don't like the studio album version, however. I'd love to find a rendition of this without the rain at the beginning.
צדקה "the world is broken we have to fix it." quote from movie. good song. sorta Dylany and i REALLY appreciate the lyrics, thanks very much, tomwolff0, nice photos above also.
Happy Succot, good film for thinking about at harvest time, has many unanswered questions, but they are all good ones. Ed Norton's Bill/Brady is a bit like Jekyll & Hyde, music is similar to "O Brother, Where Art Thou" music.
Tim Blake Nelson and Ed Norton are understated partners here, good film & sound track.
"What I want, is for you to give me that equipment and then to go back east with all the other Faggots, that think that New York City is the only place on earth!
Don't you turn your back on me!!!! Don't you walk away!!!!"
though you guys would appreciate the lyrics in full.. I'm having trouble understanding the line between the lines "keeps you hanging on" and "the breaking of the dawn"... and also, does he say (in that same area) is it "and is shattered by the silence singing sacrificial songs" or, maybe "and is shattered by the sirens singing sacrificial songs"?? could go either way..
@drewactual to answer my own question above,, it is: "until the still is signaling the breaking of the dawn" and "and is shattered by the SIRENS singing sacrificial songs".. which makes the meaning of this part of the song some strong shit yo... and makes me like it that much more..
lonely are the free cause there aint that many of them they dont walk like you or me they just tumble in the breeze lighter than a feather all together separetly thats how it's sposed to be no matter where they wander from coast to in between from here to over yonder there's no place for them to land lonely are the free
silent are the strong as so much as a whisper tells you anything is wrong you've known all along but you can't help but listen and now the moments gone keeps you hanging on until the tears are signaling the breaking of the dawn and is shattered by the silence singing sacrificial songs. the silent are the strong thats all there is to see a violet shadow passing across the sun so fleetingly that if you have to ask you miss it anyway you see lonely are the free lonely are the free
Capo on First fret. Stays in C maj the whole time, so don't overcomplicate it. Keep it simple! Throw in the melody, bass note rhythm, and your good C Lonely are the free 'cause there ain't that many of them Am they don't walk like you and me C They just tumble in the breeze lighter than a feather Am all together, separately F That's how it's s'posed to be no matter where they wander Am from post to in between, from here to over yonder, C there's no place for them to land Lonely are the free
The ol' man has done it again! I'm amazed! Now... when is the OST of this movie available, and where can we get it? Must have this song as soon as possible.
Thanks for posting! This song is rediculously hard to find. The download link you gave says "limit has been reached" - any chance of uploading again, if you have the file?
I can up the song on my rapidshare or megaupload free account and share the links here. If you want, mail me the song: nehemiaspp hotmail com Thanks for post this in youtube. The movie is amazing.
About the rapidshare link, on click he said: "This file is neither allocated to a Premium Account, or a Collector's Account, and can therefore only be downloaded 10 times."
Heard this song just now when finished watching that movie, thanks for the lyrics too. Gonna grab that guitar here and be learning me a song now. Cheers
Was going to end my life tonight,, but then while i had it ready.... i was like whats that fucking song i heard months or years ago that almost changed my life when i was younger, then i remembered it was fuckin earle and his guitar, simple but so very strong, so ill stay strong tonight... and maybe tomorrow, music is my cure for every sickness, i hope it can cure this one.
@ndf2d It's just words on a screen my friend, but you aren't alone. I don't know your pain, I can't take it away, but you aren't alone. It sucks that way sometimes, or most times, the people who don't know your pain, but at least that pain, that pain you're feeling now, are miles away. I know that years of suffering inside for whatever reason, will bring you a strength you'll never know if you stop. But the trick is to admit you aren't strong enough now, now you have to own up to your weakness.
@ndf2d No offense to Steve, but I don't agree. I've seen real men cry, and real men hold it in. I've seen real men do a lot of shit but it was never one thing, but every single one holds themselves accountable. The only person you have to be accountable to right now, is yourself. That's the toughest thing you have to face. You. You're weak right now, not bad. You understand? Take care.
Heya man...thank you so much for this! I have been looking everywhere for a download link! And being the dickhead I am, I didnt even see it under the video,HA!
[pt2] Lonely are the free Sign them on strong at so much as a whisper tells you anything is wrong we know we're not alone(?) you can't help but listen and now the moment's gone It keeps you hanging on until the stillness signaling the breaking of the dawn is shattered by the silencing of sacrificial songs the silent are the strong
What I have so far: Lonely are the free cuz there ain't that many of them they don't walk like you and me They just tumble in the breeze lighter than a feather altogether separately That's how it's supposed to be No matter where they wander from coast to in between from here to o'beyonder There's no place for them to land(?)
This song is not on any of his albums, nor is it in his discography yet. I don't know why - my only guess is that the website is rarely updated. As far as I'm aware this is the first copy available anywhere on the internet. The movie starring Edward Norton, "Leaves of Grass", hasn't been released yet onto DVD either. I was privileged enough to get a sneak peak. I assume that when the movie is released onto DVD, this song will be available on some type of soundtrack.
Steve Earle just recently released the track listing for his next album, which comes out in April. "Lonely Are the Free" will be on it, so the track should be available as an mp3 and I am sure the lyrics will be available with the liner notes.
@Qwentin99 hey, hope you know by now that this jewel is on Steve's new album, I'LL NEVER GET OF THIS WORLD ALIVE, a wonderful thing to have in your own little hands!!!
its a great song to a great movie

as first the first, it's tough. it sounds close to something like "until the stillness' signaling the breaking of the dawn"
hope that helps!
