The rhythmic sensibilities of Capt Beefheart....piercing guitars of Television.....the biting, surreal lyricism of Syd Barrett...all added up to pure magic.
Great post. I always marvel at how little the Soft Boys' album tracks differ from the demos (aside from recording quality); they always had such a clear vision of what they were doing, they had it all figured out before they ever went to record the actual album versions. WHY OH WHY ARE THERE NO VIDEO RECORDINGS?!?!
What really gets my goat is that the little attention they get is all focused on Underwater Moonlight. A great record, obviously, but I DO prefer Bees.
some of my favourite recordings actually are the demos and out takes, all the rare tracks you can get. I really like the rough feel on them. Their covers as well, of lou reed, velvet underground, lennon and syd barrett, are great. You're right that the rest of their ouvre beyond moonlight is underrated. I've already put a few tracks of it up. will do more. only the stones remain is another favourite.
@rjbride I have a whole bunch of soft boys stuff I downloaded off soulseek. It doesn't say where it's from. Might be the radar tapes or something like that. If you want some of it I can skype it you
Still remember finding A Can of Bees at Shabby Records. The sun had bleached the cover so that when I removed the stickers there was darker red underneat. This TREASURE sitting there for years!
Classic Soft Boys.

Thanks for posting. A fine alternate version, althogh the original on COB features one of the most beautifully twisted guitar solos in history.

You know, Jon, another song that is great is Fatman's Son.
Sort of an ugly song, but at 1.23 they throw in this GORGEOUS guitar bit out of nowhere! The reason why I love these guys is right there :)

It is really a hidden treasure eh. So is the band really. Especially in their own country.
