I remember this, I was bugging dad to go to a store called Grants to pick up a Sundowner trail bike I got for my 6th b-day which is August 23d. Mom said are you taking him or not, he said in a minute 2 queers have hostages in a New York bank. i'l probably get replies about dad saying that but those people can drop dead. Dad was a good man that provided for his family, never took a handout and worked hard till the day he died. And people weren't born offended in the 70s.
ONE OF THE BEST LOVE STORIES EVER!!! Vietnam vet robs bank to pay for his gay lover's sex change operation? ARE YOU KIDDING ME! that is the definition of romance! He goes from being crazy/confident then realize he's fucked & watch him think as he tries to come up with a new plan. ALL WITHOUT WORDS!
there's legit no more actors like this anymore. this breed died a long time ago along with the kick ass movies filmed back then. and this is coming from a 17 year old girl willing to admit the caliber of movies now is just so fucking shitty. jussayin
@monse1232 That's just joining the bandwagon. The films now are shitty? Like Scorsese, The Coen Brothers, David Fincher, PTA... Actors like DDL, Bale, Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman? In thirty years your kids will be saying the same thing about movies from the 2010s. If there weren't elite film makers/actors than nothing about Dog Day Afternoon would be special.
I remember this movie really throwing me for a loop. I was very young teenager at the time and it freaked me out. It was like, everybody is completely messed up, nobody is in control, society is totally f'ed. I could never watch the movie again.
What I love about it, in case anyone cares, is that Al is in the shade the whole scene... you would only see that in a guerrilla style 70's movie. Today he would be totally lit, totally gorgeous lighting... totally fairyland. This is the kind of heightened realism that allows for a really great cinema experience to take place.
@GodfatherCorleone77 There was a riot at the Attica prison in New York. Prisoners took over the facility. The police broke back in and killed a lot of people. It was a disaster.
@GodfatherCorleone77 Matt is right. Attica is a prison in NY. Around the time of this movie, there was a riot there, with many casualties. The public perception was that the police acted with reckless brutality, resulting in unnecessary deaths. Chanting 'Attica' is Pacino's way of throwing it in their face, reminding them of their brutality. It would be kind of like chanting "Remember Rodney King!" at LAPD. Kinda sorta, in a way. At least that's my impression of it.
The other day my boss piled on one more demand, even though my pay has been frozen for the past several years, giving me that line about a bad economy and having to "do more with less." It occurred to me to start waving my handkerchief and screaming, "ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA!" I wanted to. But I didn't. That's the difference between Al Pacino and me.
I have been looking for the scene in this movie where one of the hostages, a lady, says to the police "I'm going back in". Does anyone know the character and actress in this film who plyed that part?
@nicholasd62 The character's name is Sylvia and the actress is Penelope Allen. She's also in The Thin Red Line, Scarecrow (with Pacino and Gene Hackman), Bad Lieutenant and others (see IMDB).
@Oathbound your a loser. No amount of touchdowns can justify the brutality that man committed. And don't give me the "he's innocent rap" ...we all know he's a killer.
@Oathbound your a loser. No amount of touchdowns can justify the brutality that man committed. And don't give me the "he's innocent rap" ...we all know he's a killer. ...and a violent individual, I'm glad he's in jail now...even if not for the murders he committed at least for something.
Without looking up the story before watching this movie, I knew it wouldn't be successful, but had no idea of the "operation." I also figured Sal would crack and just shoot people inside the car. Regardless, another Pacino classic.
I remember seeing this with my parents when I was quite young. I don't remember him saying the "F" work but I do remember wondering is this real or not. To me it was like watching the real life OJ Simpson car chase on T.V. That's how awesome the acting was, so real.

@mussman717word Don't leave out Charles Durning in this scene...he "gives" Pacino this scene, playing his part perfectly as the "flunky pig"...Pacino's character is the more dynamic, but Durning's skills are right up there...
For people who dont know what Atica was, it was an inciddent at a prison where the inmates took over, captured the prison and started calling demands. So, instead of negiotiating the police shot into the line of prisoners killing guilty and innocent men alike. Sonny is saying attica because the police are all ready to jump to shooting and not negiotiating to get them out.

Transcendant brilliance. As to how he escaped the 1970s without an Oscar, I doubt I will ever find a satisfactory explanation.

@Kinkoyaburi Prison in upstate NY. Back in the early seventies there was a riot there, and a subsequent hostage siege that ended in a massacre of the prisoners and some hostages by police forces.
