My perspective is unaided by wine, for better or for worse,
but I think it has to do with conscience and the war that our
country has engaged in where hundreds of thousands of
innocent are being killed to keep the oil supply to Americans
gushing onward and seeping into the sky.
I think part of the tone reflects a lackadaisical and detached American
perspective on the war. First it looks like "something good has begun",

but the lyrics spin the facts that leave us no choice to share
the heart broken realization of our countries real role and real colors,
with the poignant refrain "what have we become?"
The songs sadness provides a gentle transition for the typical American
from innocent ignorance to tainted knowledge that leaves our hearts
full of questions.
Hopefully we keep asking these questions
and let them define our new realities
