This must have been an absolute nightmare for the family of those victims who saw the disaster. The Lord rest the victims souls in eternal peace and give the surviving members the strength to carry on. A real tragedy hopefully NASA learnt s merging out of this.
1 second in, you can tell that the right SRB was not a FULL plum of fire..It was flickering in such a way that the pressure was way lower than the (GOOD left SRB). Yes the field joint failed and seven people 60,000 feet in the air Died, Because lack of Nasa management. Who the hell would launch at 36c weather? A day later if they waited on the 29th this would never happen. Tell someone wants to name a shuttle Christ and see if it blow's.Don't name a spacecraft with a C. This day is burned in me.
@ilovebubu28 They might just be in shock. Probabaly even though they saw Challanger on their screens, what happened hasn't hit them yet. You know when you get into a car accident? You see the damage before you, but you're in so much shock, it hasn't actually hit you yet.
This was very touching and sad. I was only 3 when this happened and for some reason decided to look it up while I was taking a break from my psychology paper. Just to know that 3 of them may have known what was happening just breaks my heart even more. RIP
So So sad for relations to watch their loved ones die, the people going on the flight are brave, focus and furthering space projects, they accepting the risks. But what it boils down to is if they die, they die, but they leave relations to carry the pain of loss, kids without a mother or father. Is that worth risking everything for, if so then anyone who boards that shuffle are signing their own dead warrant and the pain, stress that puts on a family so hugh. No flight is ever worth 7 lives
The vehicle didn't "explode"... it was ripped apart. When the booster veered off and the tank collapsed, the shuttle was torn along and ended up wrong against the wind... it didnt' have it's nose pointed forward. The tremendous winds therefore ripped it to pieces immediately.
Had there been an explosion, everything would have been obliterated on the spot.
We were in Germany (military) when this occurred in 1983. I quickly noticed the flames on the side of the booster while watching the replays leading up to the explosion. Since I wasn't familiar with the shuttle, I didn't know the exact source, but certainly knew those flames shouldn't be there. We were at the home of another couple, so I pointed out the flames to both them and my wife. We only later learned where the flames had come from.
Richard Feynman wrote about the investigation in one of his books. It's an interesting read, but if only the disaster hadn't happened in the first place...
@yeismeload They re-played that image of her parents over and over again on the news and I always looked away. It was many years before I could stand to watch it and I still can't always manage it.
It's so hard to grasp that in all the confusion and disbelief at the time that there were engineers who not only knew exactly what had happened but knew it was going to happen.
What shocked me is that 3 of the emergency oxygen supplies had been activated which indicated that they survived the explosion. When I first saw the footage as a kid I'd assumed they'd died instantly.
Salute for all those peoples who were in there, they will always be in our heart and we wont forget them, love for all there families who loses their loved once & this love is from Pakistan.
During my 8th grade science class, we focused on the Shuttle, the missions , the history NASA... because a civilian, a teacher that won a national competition would fly the Shuttle, big deal back then.Remember it as if it was yesterday, watching this live on TV and seeing launches on TV before this..I recall thinking "did the shuttle just blow up?" - camera, mission control just kept talking as if nothing happened for the next 15-20 seconds. Was just a sad day.
"Mission control order Challenger to throttle down her engines". I'm sorry but that's bullsh*t. Challenger has solid fuel "engines", which are basically tubes filled with gunpowder. It CAN'T be throttled down.
@Maloy7800 the solid rocket boosters, yes, but the engines on the shuttle itself use liquid fuel and are used during liftoff to provide additional thrust and help the solid boosters accelerate the shuttle. that's what the giant center fuel tank is for, the shuttle's main engines.
@Maloy7800 That's why NASA puts them through such rigorous tests, to make sure they're up to the job :P
The space shuttle actually lets the onboard flight computer do most of the work, from the barrel roll at liftoff to positioning the shuttle for re-entry. There's very little that the crew themselves have to do manually (such as controlling the throttles on the main engines), the ship literally flies itself. Of course, there's still manual controls there, just in case.
LoL they got pwned on liftoff i wish i was there filming i would of made good money selling it to tv crews or whatever.. pwned on liftoff that shit is classic LoL those astronauts got owned
@vtecivicsib18 Uhm... there's a problem. The TV crews were actually THERE, so you'd have some really hard time selling it. But yes, would be nice if you were there. You could've been killed by something. GOOD! Tell your mother, she should've gone through with that abortion idea. Not to mention, she shouldn't 've messed with a drunk trucker.
@ziradith well i think these guys are trained for this. i mean they would know there is nothing they could do and at the same time if you panic you will do more harm than good ya know what i mean?
@SecretService80 I think they were in complete shock and could not even grasp what they had just seen. One second they're watching their daughter take off, the next second she's dead. I imagine it took them a long time to get out of a state of disbelief. Unlike the other families there, they were not used to having space travel and the associated danger as parts of their lives. Anyway, it makes me cry to see all of the families having to witness such a horrible moment.
This must have been an absolute nightmare for the family of those victims who saw the disaster. The Lord rest the victims souls in eternal peace and give the surviving members the strength to carry on. A real tragedy hopefully NASA learnt s merging out of this.

@zooch79 Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
