i have a 90' 300GD automatic. its a great car, but you should try to get a 300 Turbodiesel. it has 177hp instead of 113. the non-turbo really is not the fastest. its enough for offroading and normal driving but for everyday driving the 300 Turbo is better.
my fuel economy is 22mpg, has 250000 miles, first gearbox, first engine. and still sounds like new. along with Ford Excursion and the S class W140 best car in the world
Not the fastest in non-turbo? My 1980 300D 4 sp man. gray market would do a consistant 21.8 1/4 mile at a NationDragAssoc. sanctioned track. I bought it like that - Intake and exhaust German factory install with no aftermarket installation. I could catch rubber 1st, 2nd & 3rd on asphalt. Timing advanced 5 degrees. Pump Pressure increased 20%.
It had something that no other Mercedes normally has (a driveshaft harmonic balancer).
Yes, I'll admit it, it was an oddball. Most 300D's won't come anywhere close to doing what that car did. Off the line traffic light, I could take any small stock any v6. I also used the silver bottle (don't remember name now)it increased Cetane 10 points and I ran nothing but Amoco Premium which is nothing less than 50 Cetane. Motor oil Chevron Delo 400 20W20 Winter and Sumer straight 30 wgt. No oil additives. Manual Tranny and rear axle ATF oil. (Automatic Trans oil) Stock from Mercedes
Very nice. I own an 86' 300gd 5 door and a 99' G300TD 3 door. They are the best. Even better than the landcruisers and the defenders can't touch them.
Unfortunately no, pre 2000 G-class' with turbos experience a lot of Turbo lag (at least mine does) so in this case the 270 CDI would outrun it for a while until you hit the sweet spot in the rev range in the turbo.

yea pretty much the only thing more capable is a hummer h1. but the G is a way better street car and alot more driver friendly
