What I like about the writing of PKD is the future is close and its not in good shape... in fact its a mess. People are the same, and machines are ordinary to the people who use them.
The film isn't set in 2013. It's set in the future, seven years from now. Regardless of what year it was released in, I don't think a definite year can, or should be placed on it.
@googlejoint It's 2013 in the book. The film came out in 2006, and was set 7 years in the future, which sort of sets it in 2013, but I agree it's better just to think of it as "in the future". That was it's always relevant.
You're right about the relevancy element, and I hear what you mean, as in the film would have been set around 2013 when it came out ("seven years from now..."), but in the book it's quite clearly said to be June 1994 in California - page 3 of Ch.1 if you don't believe me ;)

Guess I didn't pay attention enough on Page 3 haha. Great movie, and I'm really enjoying the book so far. I just wish I could own a Cephalochromoscope. Sounds epic ;)
The book is awesome too, and I actually think in this case it's better to see the film first then read the book, mainly due to all that crazy rotoscoping - makes images far more vivid in your head when you read it, especially re: the scramble suits, imo
I really hope someday he gets the chance to make Ubik that's my personal favorite of all PKD novels
