I'm not an opera expert. I love Beethoven and Mozart and most baroque music. I've heard the versions of this by Fernandez (from Diva) and also Tebaldi's. Their versions are superb. I've listened to numerous versions of this aria and can really say that Callas takes them all. Noble sound, noble tune, noble breath, noble intonations, noble transformation. La Divina.

@s0ondae I have the 2CD 'Diva The Ultimate Collection' This is track 12 on CD1. The date in the info booklet has the date 1955 next to the name of the track. The double CD was produced in 1996, and I imagine is still available. I get most of my music from either HMV or Play online. Hope this helps.

Can no-one see that she is the worst screecher of all opera singers. She breathes on her chest and doesn't use her diaphragm. She really isn't as good as everybody thinks, she has the typical western opera voice rather than the mellow Italian voice. I'm surprised her voice didn't run out sooner because of the way she sings on her throat, you can just hear the strain. Anyone who has been taught correctly will tell you this.

This woman's voice was flawed, but she sang from her soul, and I like that. Others may not. She is definitely a legend; there are many and I don't think they can be compared because each is unique. If you don't like Callas, listen to Sills, Sutherland, Tebaldi, Freni, Fleming, Caballe, Price, Te Kanawa - you'll find the one you love.

A voice with three octaves full supported (Fa#3-E6), able to sing from Lakmé to Turandot giving different and innovative tones to every character can't be ugly. You haven't got to like her, but her singing changed the history of opera (so that they talk of pre-Callas and post-Callas).

Yes, she could sing 24 tones, but on no register she was something special. Callas was, primarily, a singing dramatic actress and just perfect for women, gays and soppy freaks. But there were a lot of better Singers in every register.
Callas was a comb pliers, a Swiss Army knife, good for everything but not as good as special tool. But it's enough for the average listener!!!

Can no-one see that she is the worst screecher of all opera singers. She breathes on her chest and doesn't use her diaphragm. She really isn't as good as everybody thinks, she has the typical western opera voice rather than the mellow Italian voice. I'm surprised her voice didn't run out sooner because of the way she sings on her throat, you can just hear the strain. Anyone who has been taught correctly will tell you this.

Oh, people, take a chill pill, will ya? Listen to a singer with your heart and realize that everyone likes/dislikes certain singers for a myriad of reasons. This woman's voice was flawed, but she sang from her soul, and I like that. Others may not. She is definitely a legend; there are many and I don't think they can be compared because each is unique. If you don't like Callas, listen to Sills, Sutherland, Tebaldi, Freni, Fleming, Caballe, Price, Te Kanawa - you'll find the one you love.
