toyota tick is just another one of toyota's many problems, the brake and steering problems are some of the most disturbing, oil sludge and rod knock will just kill the engine, but the steering aqnd brake defects could be as deadly as the unintended acceleration problem was
its normal. it sounds like this more often when you first start it early in the morning and when you are low on oil. It also depends on gas grade. in the unlead grade it will sound more like this. in prenium grade it sound different. after all this is what all 4 cyclinder motors that is 1.8liter sounds like. i find the bigger the displacement the less noise it is.
@zajdabneeg This was neither the first start of the day, nor was the oil level low. I was running regular gas at the time, but I tried switching to 89 octane, and nothing changed. I think 1ZZs are just noisy motors.
@Xbox360Player350 these years model are a bit more noisy. but i think it is mainly due to valve clearance and the mechanism vvti to it. usually for mine back then i have to run it accouple miles before the noise smoothens out. it is the same sound in everyone of them. how ever it is not a major problem. even the newer 1zz are noisy. but what do you expect from a 1.8 1zz? i got to admit a 2.0+ will sound alot better.
@Xbox360Player350 like my dad says. a 4cyclinder sounds like a weak car. it makes all those weak unsmooth sound. a v6 sounds flawless. You could bearly hear anything from inside the car. I drove my 01 rolla up to 145K until a lady T boned me. I've gotten into two accident that is not my fault with that car. suprise it still runs great except once it reaches the 140k mark that i notice it starts to burn oil faster and oil level lower soo quick.
@zajdabneeg Haha I don't know about that. Certain 4 cylinders sound great. And I actually like a bit of motor music in the cabin lol. V6s and inline 6s do sound great though. I have an E36 M3 now
it's an easy fix tough, if it is the manifold just have to put 2 long srews trough it on the right places and job done... i work at a Toyota dealership & that's how we solve this cheap and fast :-p
85% it's your OCV (Oil Control Valve). Makes the 1ZZ sound like a clacking diesel motor. It is located at the front-right corner of the engine and has a two terminal connector on it. 10mm wrench will be needed. once out, carefully clean it with some carb cleaner. Also, just below that, is another plug with a very tiny filter. Clean that too. Do this in conjunction with an oil change.
It's a spray-able solvent. That's all you need to remove deposits of coked oil and other gunk that can build up and prevent the OCV from operating correctly. Other solvents can be used as well, but I suggested the one I did for its convenience in aerosol form. It worked great for me.
@3F05Q hey just came across this now.. my 03 1zz motor is popping codes up random misfire 1,2,3,4 and is running too lean. ive checked all the vac. lines and put hose clamps on them and changed the intake gasket, the injector o rings and grommets. it idles like shit and seems to surge accelerating normally (standard 5 speed). You know anything about this? thanks
@MrBansheeguy gonna sound crazy... check the lines going into (or coming out of... whatever you wanna say) the airbox. had the filter changed on my celica once and the girl at the place forgot to reattach a line. it did everything you described. i thought the ECU had gone bad!
Probably has hydrolic tappets and one is beginning to collapse when low revs lowers oil pressure allows a leaky check ball to bleed off oil pressure and therefor allowing valve clearance to report back with the ticking noise. It it is not a faulty checkball spring it could clear itself in time. Wouldn`t use oil detergent to clear.
i have the exact same car/engine. it's normal for it to sound like that when it's cold. it's normal to sound like that a little when it's warm. if you haven't done a valve adjustment/timing chain adjustment (or change) then it's due. other than that the sound is coming from your lifters. they have to fill with oil to work properly and that usually doesn't happen until it gets warm. also, they're electronically controlled (VVT-I) and will be a little low when cold or at idle... email me for more.
no. at worst you would be looking at poor gas mileage because the valves aren't opening as far as they used to and the computer is still dumping the same amount of fuel in anyway. i would get it fixed whenever you have the money. you don't have to worry about the lifters. they're doing what they're supposed to do... but i would definitely have the valves adjusted and the timing chain/gears replaced...
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT IS MAKING THIS SOUND?..because my mom rear ended someone w/ a Toyota Matrix also w/ the 1ZZ-FE a year ago, and recently it started making this noise. I, who just happened to be unlucky, reversed parked the Matrix into a space and someone who backed out bumped into me..T.T. My mom is kinda starting to freak out on this. Btw, I'm only a 16 year old driver. yea...SOS.
Yea bro i have a 2001 Celica Gt 5 speed manual with 135000 Miles. Running great. Your engine sounds fine. humming like a bird. and like sovie said change your oil regularly and you will get alot of miles out of that engine.
Lol yeah 1zz is a noisy engine, mainly you hear the injectors and the valve train, nothing to worry about, mine sounds the same, just keep your eye on your oil level and use synthetic.
i thought valves at first but i doubt valves bc of the way it sputters sometimes. turns from a tick to a vibration

@onewingedangel326 Hmm I'm thinking it was probably just the injectors

@zajdabneeg True, Toyota's bigger 4s do sound better. Maybe because the 1ZZ was their first aluminum block 4 cylinder?

@marek0086 Somewhere around 140,000 in this video I think. I sold the car in 2009

@Xbox360Player350~ It was probably just the valve clearances. Do u know much about engines?

@Xbox360Player350~ yes they are hydraulic... but they also need adjusting with shims. Its a weird setup.
