i have not seen a more fun & entertaining car race ever than this, as i can recall of. with all types of cars , it reminds me of le mans 24h race. that fight for first place between the camaro & escort is amazing racing! a big thanks for this upload mk1tina!
@23751 to be honest i havent found the films since moving last year and must be buried in a box somewhere :-( I know i didnt have the championship u ask for.
Why do I feel nostalgia when I wasn't even born for another 10 years?! Great stuff. What became of this circuit?? . . another retail park for Matalan, Argos and PC World I imagine :(
Not only more excitement in one race than a whole F1 season, not only more wonderful sounds that tingle the sences, but also an amazing smell of Castrol R.... Even just watching this brings that special smell straight back....
1 Camaro, 1 Mustang. Thankf goodness grew up in Oz with stormin Norman Monara Big Pete and Moffs Mustangs, Jane and Thommo's Camaros and so forth. V8 power rules!
Hey all you dudes: Motor Racing is Back at Crystal Palace this May Bank Holiday 2010. Check the web for details. I doubt spectators could sit on the grass verge - like they did in the 60's. As a young lad, I would take the bus to Crystal Palace, climb over the fence at Thicket Road and sit on the railway sleepers on the race track - with my legs hanging over the circuit - as the likes of Graham Hill went roaring by. Tickets are just £10..
At the time it was serious but fun, Gerry used to bog down often at the start but often it was a bit of show boating to blast through from the back- and for us in the smaller cars he was often a bit rough- you had to get out of the way --or else!! One of the highlights of my racing was passing Gerry in the wet at Mallory, out of Shaws hairpin - he was on slicks! You have to remember also Gerry was the only one at the time with works/semi works assistance.
I used to race against these guys --way behind but racing like this most weekends and all friends after. marshal used to have acouple of pints at lunch before the race and much more after. Sometimes these races supported the sportscars, lola T70 , Ferrari P3 etc, you can imagine the spectacle!
There was some similar fun at Brands this weekend, but not quite so close for so long. Coys historics and the Goodwood revival give us a flavour, but have to say it must have been nice first time round "for real". Yes I am just a little bit jealous....
Another memory is Frank Gardner lapping us on the club straight at Silverstone. In the slipstream my mini turned sharp right through the infield cornfield, had to get a tractor to tow me out but Frank after came to see if all was ok! Another great character that was hard but very fair!! Imagine this lot and Barry Williams sideways antics and yes it was FUN most weeks.
Another memory is Frank Gardner lapping us after 4 lapson the club straight at Silverstone. In the slipstream my mini turned sharp right through the infield cornfield, had to get a tractor to tow me out but Frank after came to see if all was ok! Another great character that was hard but very fair. Imagine this lot and Barry Williams sideways antics and yes it was FUN! Spent 3 glorious days at Classic races Silverstone, last year. What a shame this fantasticaly organised event has gone already!
38 years old,and what is more exciting to watch this or modern day F1.?no contest,i just hope the Beeb doesnt fukc up this season, but thank god no more Add breaks.
Crystal Palace is very similar to Catalina Park here in Australia. Tight, entertaining, but now gone. This footage just shows how good the track was, but even more shows how good Gerry Marshall was. From an Aussie, great footage, and a great tribute to the man whose equivalent in Australia was the late Peter Brock. RIP for both champions.
that brought back some great memories of my dad taking me there when i was a kid nearly every bank holiday i wish someone had some more film clips from there thanks again !!!
that brought back some great memories of my dad taking me there when i was a kid nearly every bank holiday i wish someone had some more film clips from there thanks again !!!
Those were the days - cracking classic stuff. More action in 8 minutes than in almost a whole season of current F1 !! You can almost smell it !! Brilliant.
I too was someone who recorded this amazing race many years ago and sadly lost it in the mist of time - thank you for uploading it - I raced many times at Brands in the 70's and had the pleasure of seeing the Big Man throw 'Old Nail/Big/Baby Bertha to one of 600 + wins - if there was ever a man who deserved a knighthood for sheer charisma/and
entertaintment.. RIP Gerry - Thank you for the great memories
Yes - this was when special saloon racing was fantastic to watch. Crazy machines and crazy drivers, who never failed to entertain. Is there any more special or super saloon footage out there?
My God, I have been hoping for someone to upload this for the best part of 20 years.
I remember coming home the day this was first shown, 100 Greatest Sporting Moments on BBC2. I changed channel, saw some motor racing, took a few seconds to realise what race this was, then slammed a video into the VHS recorder to capture it - but sometime in the last 20 years the video disappeared :(
To see the whole race from the start is priceless.
Typical Murray Walker, of course: he totally fails to comment at around 4:17 when Mike Crabtree in the Ford Escort RS1600 clearly comes up inside Thomas's Camaro (one can hear the tires schreech as they get out of shape) and then next shot they're all out of sorts and the gap from first to third has totally closed. Murray seems oblivious -- he must have been looking down at his notes or something. :)
Yes... have some with Andy Rouse and the late Keith Odor in the RS500's and Smith - Ratner with M3 etc. Not sure how they survived yet,do house up at the mo but will get there..
Just found more footage to convert & upload time permitting.. Crystal Palace F3 with James Hunt 1970, Rally Sprint Series with Tony Pond, Stig, many other top drivers inc F1 guests.. Cars include Talbot Sunbeam lotus, Chevette HSR "R-Brooks" etc..
I think I might have been at this one? I went to the formula 2 meetings in 1965 and 1966 and in at least one or two other years. I always got myself at North Tower corner and can well remember much of the action. I can't remember this bash however. I was there the year Frank Gardner was driving the Wiggins Teape Camaro which was obviously not on this occasion. Can anyone help jog my memory? I likewise would love to get this on DVD.
no original footage left of this.. I did ask bbc some 10 yrs ago or more and they said the tapes were thrown!.. I'm working through my VHS and saving it all to DVD...
I miss TV like this! Thanks for taking the time to post it. I don't suppose anyone else remembers a race between Gerry Marshall in one of his Vauxhalls, and Roger Clark in a works Escort?? I was about 10 at the time around 1970. Two very different approaches to getting around a corner! If anyone has it, please post it!
This is amazing, thanks for putting this on. I wish so much they would vary modern touring cars to allow massive engined cars with the 2 litre ones! Like imagine the 300C Crysler vs Vauxhall Astras and stuff like that :D
Fantastic posting. And another reason that racing is weaker today is the cars themselves. It's not so exciting watching small-engined anonymous boxes droning round.

Oh, okay. I wonder where I came up with Martin Birrane. O_O I think he has driven cars though, if I'm not mistaken he drove at Le Mans once. XD
YukiNekoPrincess 2 years ago
YukiNekoPrincess, it was actually Martin Birrane. I hadn't even seen the whole video when I posted that XD
scook120 2 years ago
o, LOL. Well, I guess Martin Birrane was/is pretty epic then.
(Btw, any word on that new F1 chassis Lola had built lately? You'd think they could find a buyer for it.)
