I think that this monster face wasnt showing his hidden face as alien or something, but his monstrous personality!!

When you opened his desk and touch the bones rolling out after the room where he slaughtered the dog, the portrait will change into this in the blink of an eye. He is the most unforgivable scum walking the earth.

(SPOILER) The portal he tries to get through in the end of the game is a passage back to his own world.

@Maxiking006 Daniel wants to kill Alexander for the horrible things that Alexander made him do. Daniel went to the castle to try to find a way to stop the shadow that's following him, and Alexander made Daniel kidnap people for torture. Daniel thought those people were criminals, etc. who deserved the torture. They were actually innocent.

@Maxiking006 I think they came from alexander's world. Remember when Alexander's note said that he needed this substance for Agrippa's potion? He said that the substance isn't on this world, but you can get it from the Kaernk, the water monster.

@KingLyonidis usually that's the case but, in the taxonomy room, or where the first painting of Alexander is located, If you look at the pile of skulls/bones you find in the desk drawer for a while then back at the painting he'll have changed.
