for sure...I'll take da 96-97 Penny Hardaway over any past or present NBA player, I could go on and on about where he would rank amongst da greats had he not gotten injured...one of da rare players that could dominate a game with scoring, passing, and defense. 1 cent live 4ever!!!!!
@uziman2. I am a Bulls fan but I see what it is in hoops first. Except for MJ I do agree that I take Penny in his peak over Kobe and Lebron; and Penny is very close to MJ in his peak. And the MJagic in 1994-95 and 1995-96 are probably among the greatest non-NBA Title Teams ever. The 94-95 Team I think just let the big stage and choking Game 1 get to them and thats why they didn;t give Houston a better fight. In 95-96 the Bulls were the greatest ever so its understandable.
I've watched Penny from Memphis Treadwell to the Miami Heat, I have yet to see a basketball player with his skill level and iq to match. His career got shortened but he will always be my favorite basketball player. He may not be a hall of famer, but he will be one of the reasons players like Lebron and Tmac go. Penny is #1!!!
@Peypen. If Penny doesn;t get put into the Basketball Hall fo Fame then I lost all respect for what Hall of Fame means. Penny was almost as good as MJ in the mid-90s and people MJ refocused his game when he came back so yes those were MJs best yrs as well. Same could be said for Grant Hill but like Penny injuries took his career away---heck same for Alonzo Mourning. So many great superstars in the 90s could not coninue that greatness in the 00s due to freak injuries/illnesses.
Could have ended up one of the best ever! No weaknesses in his game. Size, athleticism, smart, jumper, dunks, an overall great player. Neck and neck with MJ for a year or 2. MJ did it for over a decade tho! Thanks for the vid!
MJ did it every year he played, dumbass. Anyway, he didn't guard MJ, he guarded their point guard. MJ used to dominate everybody he played, thats why he got the highest regular season & playoff scoring avg. record.
i remember Penny dunking on a one man breakaway against the bulls at orlando in 96-97 season... jordan tried to run back and block penny's dunk but penny double clutched and dunk on mj... but i've never seen that highlight again
Jordan developed his post game as he got older and could no longer fly past opponents , but penny had the best post up, back down game i have ever seen. That s the problem with the league very few post player probably could name them on one hand. If you got that in your arsenal ur down near unstoppable. I love seeing hardaway post up scottie and dogg him knowing how good pippen was with his defense.
mj has met a great rival in penny coz penny is the ultimate complete player in the history of the nba. size advantage to guards. quickness that can easily blow forwards and smarts of playing unselfish basketball plus deadly outside shooting from 3pt. range upto half court all in all his a complete package. only injuries denied the fact if a prime healthy penny could surpass mj?
Penny was great. My favorite player growing up. At 6'7" and freakishly quick and athletic, I would have liked to see anyone stop him had he not had so many injuries. Probably the most athletic until LeBron came along (all things considered: ball handling, court vision, leaping, getting to the rim, etc.)
Thanks for the Memphis State clips of Penny. I got to watch him play then and it was amazing, especially considering how he was homegrown talent--and the Tiger had to play against the Cincinnati Bearcats, featuring Nick Van Exel and Co. again, thanks for the MSU clips.
Penny was the second best player in the league behind Jordan according to not only the analyst's but also Jordan himself....if it wasnt for the injuries who knows how amazing his career would have been.
You must didn't see MJ when he was younger. MJ was lightning fast when he was young, dumb mofo. When he got older, he slowed down a little bit, dumbass
Had it not been for multiple injuries, Penny and Grant Hill what have been in the discussions of top 10 players of all time.. Damn I wish we could of seen them at their best all the time
Great vid, One of the best players and charachters to step into the nba, humble, always smilin, not a hater, not a showoff, great player...my fav player of all time.....and yes if only it wasent for the injury......
If anyone can tell me any player in the history of the NBA who had a higher skill level than Penny, please let me know. He may not be the greatest player ever, but what player at his size has ever had his court vision, speed, hops, quickness, tenacity, killer instinct and jumpshot. Long live the best player to ever wear number 1.
I remember being a Penny Die Hard fan!. Actually his move help me become a better player. I remember I mastering his spin while going in the lane, the challege about that you need to create option to shoot the ball. I held on to hs rookie card. I would never trade his cards! I saved my little funds for his jersey. AFter Shaq left it was just a different mood for him I guess. Then his love just fade away. Penny I don't know what to say!
Have you ever seen any player with this kind of skill set b4 or since? big guard ball handling scoring ability and passing ability.
don't get me wrong Jordan had these attributes, but no one was worried about Mike's passing. i mean Penny could pass like JKidd, dunk on Ewing(the prerequisite for all Stars back then), and almost singlehandedly beat the Heat in the playoffs one year. Penny was so good that Jordan said he would carry the league when he left. He never said THAT about anyone.
I'm very happy to see penny play in his golden age. Also I'm happy to be able to see him play in Japan against Nets.
Thank you for posting !!

I probably already said something but what the hell...
Penny had the skill to lead the league in scoring but he was a combo player of MJ23 and Magic. He like to pass andget his teammates involved too.
Too bad his health held him back. Also add that he was sensitive and let criticism rattle him.
I still enjoy watching him. Awesome athleticism and a high basketball iq.

one more thing penny played consecutive games w/o any single turnover. star players are prone to commit errors coz they always have the ball
