Oh and I know that people think by over trimming you will save money and not have to trim so often! There wrong! Palm will only grow faster to compensate for lost photosynthesis! Thus palm grows faster and is stressed!

You're doing more damage to the tree than good. Palms survive off of the fronds, which shouldn't be cut when green. Also, spikes do irreparable damage to the trunk.

The climb was impressive, but you trimmed too much. Trimming the palm leaves before they're almost all the way down causes the trunk to grow lean.

I disagree. I have been trying to remove a palm tree in my yard for years. I have hacked off every leaf. They grew back. Hacked them off again. Grew back. How do I kill this thing?

Does the owner have any recourse when that palm dies from being over-pruned? Doubt it. And the palm has no recourse either. What butchery. If you're worried about the liability of a healthy palm with a skirt, then don't buy a house with one. We had a 60-year low cold snap in Tucson last month, and many of the over-pruned palms are toast.

ive never seen a tree go bad because of using spikes the palms look ugly when they are full of dead leaves usually when they get trimmed in the summer time they will be almost exactly the same by next summer

I have a lot of palms I need to trim, what is the best way to climb while doing the least possible damage? I have the tree saddle, is it possible to just climb without spurs. They are nowhere near as tall as this tree but I'd say they are about 30-40' at the top fronds. Most are sabals

Great way to kill a tree. The spikes alone will give that tree disease. There is much better equipment out there to use. Try the Alpha tree stand/climber by Lone Wolf.

It is spike less and will not harm the tree. If it is green do not cut it. It will take the tree much longer to recover with out these nutrients.

I am a Palm grower / pollinator. We use the tree climbers to retrieve pollen with out damaging the trees.

@mjbrown69 I can see that you are a palm grower, and not an arborist. If you were, then you would understand why we use climbing spurs and not stands. The stands are cumbersome and dangerous to use while cutting. You need a stable foot hold. If there were a safe way to do it that does not harm the tree and is viable, we would already be doing it. Also the client would specify that the tree be cut back harshly so that there is a longer period until they hire us again. But thanks for the advice.

There was no use to cut those green leaves.. when it dries up then u cut it.. Yah i heard that some people say that when the leave dries up, it falls by itself, but it doesnot, I have experienced it. I saw a palm tree in one house where no one lived, the leaves of the plant did not fall. The whole tree was full with dried leaves..

rockah859 and wetbackpride358 have obviously never grown a palm tree before insulting someone try to be credible. I have been growing palms for 40 years. Washingtonia robusta is a self cleaning tree and will drop dead fronds naturally. The leaves are food that is reused. If you look for pictures of w. robusta in the wild it has a smooth trunk. It will not collapse on it self. Each time a tree is climbed in spike boots permanent trunk damage occurs. Palms cannot heel trunk injuries.

I agree with Lytkinedennis, this palm is being pruned improperly. You never spike trees and you never remove too many fronds. These fronds are nutrients that feed the tree. This tree should have been left alone!

I have done my research and I am right. You are wrong. The trees (palm trees) that do best in hurricane are the ones left alone. the dead fronds protect the heart of the palm when pushed by strong winds.

The leaves don't fall off naturally on this Mexican Fan Palm. They form around the tree forming a skirt. Of course he is going to overprune it because that is a long trip up there.
