Boyle's version is very self-indulgent. By self-indulgent, I mean singing all the notes "pretty," not making any dynamic changes and just letting her vibrato ride so she can here herself sing. Nothing makes this version unique or stand out. It's very flat.
Barbra allows herself to be "ugly" (if that's even possible for barbra's voice, let's face it, it's not) by cutting notes short and musically interpreting the song to follow the lyrics. When you listen to Barbra sing, she grows with the song, reaches a high point (I don't mean high note, even though those are phenomenal and well supported on her, I mean emotional and musical height of the song) and then ends it beautifully

She's not trying to impress the audience or show-off, she's trying to convey the emotion, fully immerse herself in the song, and show respect to Arthur Hamilton's gorgeous chart. Boyle's version sounds like she's singing in a foreign language as the phrasing of her breath and melodic choices don't match how you would naturally say the lyrics at all. I don't care if you're a professional singer or not -- if you go on some "talent" show
and want to make a career of singing, you should invest in learning about the craft and if she knew anything about musical theatre singing (which I believe is what she auditioned with, yes?) then she would know you should study the libretto first, and interpret the lyrics before making musical choices. I clicked on this video out of curiosity.

@giowillis : I think both versions are equally nice it's just a question of one's preference. I love Barbra, but I will have to agree with 'Markbryn", Barbra does sing it beautifully but it's obvious she's hamming it up ...sort of like "Look at me I'm singing" Susan's performance is far more sincere and vulnerable imho.

@Katfishh Those were Streisand's feelings. Susan was singing about a real life romance, gone wrong, shortly before she recorded the song. If you can't hear the raw emotion in her voice, I don't know what you think it sounds like.
I like her voice it feels like a true expression of her heart. Her interpretation is not seductive like London's nor bitter angst driven like Barbara's. No one's voice is as spectacular as Barbara's or Whitney's (before Bobby).

I can't stop listening to this song,,,I just want more. I only buy CDs occasionally but I 'll buy anything she sings. I would love to see her in concert. I'm usually somewhat embarassed to be so enthusiastic about another persons' talents, but in this case I'm shamelessly smitten.

That was smooth.Barbara have a lot of pitchy parts.I can't hear susans.sounds like it's out of the 1950's.just made in the 1999.she sings like it's to easy for her to sing.That's what makes it so super to smooth.This can be a big hit song .

@Katfishh in her new album, she covers this tune with a more appropriate verve but if you discount the lyrics, the smooth & alluring vocals in this 1999 recording are better than the album, at least IMHO.

@Katfishh Those were Streisand's feelings. Susan was singing about a real life romance, gone wrong, shortly before she recorded the song. If you can't hear the raw emotion in her voice, I don't know what you think it sounds like.

I like her voice it feels like a true expression of her heart. Her interpretation is not seductive like London's nor bitter angst driven like Barbara's. No one's voice is as spectacular as Barbara's or Whitney's (before Bobby).

This is too tepid, listen to the words, she's supposed to be pissed off at him! Where's the emotion?! She's good, but for the words she's singing, it's too monotone and boring. Show some range, lady.

TornTen said the younger singers today aren't usually trained to handle notes like these and often can't sing them anyway because of lack of talent and/or experience. I agree and with the right software, even the most out of tune singers suddenly sound good.

On his first audition he came out in a crumpled business suit and the crowd was mocking him like they did Susan and America was worse, they started booing him, but instead of running off the stage, he kept singing and his voice is a God given gift that turned the crowd around to where they were giving him a standing ovation like they did Susan. I was involved in the nashville music scene. Young people are the biggest buyers of music. (or their parents buy CDs for them)
As a result the producers are looking for young goodlooking people.
I know many people with far greated talent than miss boyle.

I can't stop listening to this song,,,I just want more. I only buy CDs occasionally but I 'll buy anything she sings. I would love to see her in concert. I'm usually somewhat embarassed to be so enthusiastic about another persons' talents, but in this case I'm shamelessly smitten.
