  • Baldwin was a very good friend with Malcolm. Spike Lee's Malcolm X was James Baldwins screenplay. Which should tell you how close they truly were. And it was taken from his book One day when I was lost. Spike confirmed this in his book on the making of Malcolm X In his book on the movie.

  • @javan82 They were friends but Baldwin was very critical of Malcolm.

  • @nomibe2911 it would have been great to have seen malcolm discussions more after he came back from Mecca and changed his veiws from the Nations veiw of race.

  • I'm glad and sorry you ask me that question. Great response from Baldwin.

  • Tears to my eyes

  • @Benny209 word

  • wow

  • Moral bankruptcy, a pervasive mental, spiritual, and intellectual condition within my community. The illusion of inclusion have taken root and seeing the forest isnt possible because of the tree. Ask yourself, what is the contingency of the future of the country. Is the future of the negro/ and this nation insoluble? What does this say either way?

  • Bruh James Baldwin Had Some Answers

  • I love it how he always says "people in THIS country", because others just say, "the white man" which means the whole world and that´s wrong

  • The morality and the courage to "face" that question. Ah, my dear brother Baldwin. That's always been the rub, hasn't it?

  • "the country shouldnt be worried about the Muslim movement, thats not the problem, the problem is the conditions that breed the Muslim movement." BOOOOOOOm !

  • @witness623 You could take this statement and apply it globally. Take the Islamist movements worldwide and ask what conditions Western nations helped create that bred them: the conquest and carving up of lands for natural resources, the propping up of puppet dictators, the undermining of genuine democratic movements (as in Iran)...He travelled exetnsively in Africa, Turkey & the Middle East and I wonder if he saw what we're going through now with the Muslim world coming..

  • when the racists of the day back then watched this man speak, HOW could they justify their own racism in their mind at that moment? what kind of thoughts convinced them that hatred towards a skin color is the right choice, while listening to this man? it boggles the mind.

  • I think I'm a prime example when I say this but......Why have I never heard of James Baldwin. I was tuned in as if he were preaching (he indeed was). But I've never heard of this man and the fact that we learn about outside governments and history and not true American (white, black, gold, green, turquoise, plaid, checkered, whatever) shows that our country is not for us. This is sad.....that's why he had so much passion because of the realization of our countries issues. God Bless Us All

  • @JazzBass7 Forgive me, but you must be white. Because I can't imagine an African-American not knowing who James Baldwin was

  • @88savagebeast I indeed forgive you for your ignorant (lack of knowledge) comment and wished that you could have just asked me rather than assumed. But I am black...and you could have just visited my page to see for yourself. But I have never heard of him and if I have he was never acknowledged. But I don't blame myself because I obviously strolled through a few videos and watched the ones about him. But I could blame schooling, lack of information on him in books, and so on. Be blessed brother.

  • a beautiful man

  • tears running down my face....... eliminate the cause of the Muslim movement.

  • @jamafrican657 Eliminate a Muslim cause? You need to explain yourself because I'm Muslim.

  • @Jemini29944 My apologies, I think you have misinterpreted my comment, I mean if there was a complete metaphysical understanding amongst human beings on an international scale no hatred, oppression, anger and hate there would be no 'cause' for any movements from any race or religion. Sorry if I have offended you.

  • @jamafrican657 Ah, I see what your saying. I wish you would have generalized the comment instead of using the term 'Muslim'. Nevertheless, I accept your apologies and I have to say that I agree completely. The problem in the Muslim faith is that we don't typically denounce radical islamic factions as loudly as we should. The reason is, because we are private about our religious practices so we don't speak publicly about our concerns.

  • tears running down my face.......

  • All three parts were absolutely phenomenal. A brilliant man, and i can't stress that enough.

  • Truth!

  • "i am not a n..... i am a man

but if you think i am a n... means you need it"

    RESPECT.

  • I LOVE TRUTH

  • James Baldwin, this brother was so necessary!!!

  • The entire interview is excellent but this segment in particular is something special.

  • "To be a pessimist is to agree that human life is an academic matter."

He believed in people. As Teena would say, "That's as rare as vintage wine".

  • has the gentle sensitivities of a poet with a troubled soul. I love him so much, without being black or gay. He has this younger-brother-stronger-than-thee thing, where you just stand back and applaud his heroism and genteelness.

  • James Baldwin spoke the truth so matter -of-factly and plain; anyone who listens can understand what he says. Now, also, there is religion to contend with, political affiliation, the pre-k philosophy "your with us, or with them". Nothing is more unpopular today than the truth...

  • All these later, and James Baldwin could ask the same questions. Yes, things have changed, but the "other" remains strong as is evident with the increase in racial bigotry we hear each day. Thanks for uploading this interview.

  • im blown away by the profundity of this....sadly, America still can not face this question and answer

  • Was Malcolm X friends with James Baldwin?

  • Was Malcolm X was friends with James Baldwin?

  • Wise words...

    -G

  • HEAVY!!!!

  • true to the game !!!

  • This man is living the pain and conflict of america at the time he lived. He was immersed in the issues but differently than the blacks are today. Today's "negroes" buffer themselves from the insidious social violence with the toy's and distractions that this culture offers versus using them to study the world. We can't talk about "Black Power" because we've given the power over to those in power, hoping for some crumb of inclusion (Obama, Jay-Z, et al.)

    ps- nigger/nigga, it's all the same 6:36.

  • you can never progress to your full potential if all you do or most of what you do is dwell on the past or on history that you have not lived. Don't let this great foundation your ancestors gave their lives for building be just a foundation. Turn off your T.V. Stay away from the mall. Read learn build then pass it on

  • It is a fact whether you agree or disagree with this man is irrelevant. Unless one has actually lived through their era, you are not qualified to agree or disagree. It is impossible to understand what they are feeling, you can only grasp a tiny bit of an idea. Sure one has their own emotions but it can never be what these human beings felt in their time. Don't criticize the past. Take what you wish from these or any educational vid, book, lecture, advice and carry on with your life.

  • @unhearddof I think I'm in love you with!

  • The suggestion that people should ask themselves why they feel the need to denigrate and demean others is an interesting one.

  • An internet article TODAY "For Obama, Race Means Repeated Distractions"...as long as the white populace thinks America's racial situation has been solved, and that problem is not a daily reality for black people, it will continue to be a "repeated distraction" for them. They'll never understand why invading Iraq or Afghanistan is racist, or why Jesse Jackson continues to fight. What really can be done? I guess they need to watch this video, for starters...thanks antihostile.

  • "It is entirely up to the American people whether or not they are going to face and deal with and embrace this stranger whom they've maligned so long...and I'm not the nigger here, and though you, the white people, invented him, you'd better find out why...the future of the country depends on that... "

  • even the host is smoking. cool. not cool really.

  • God, he's so mesmerizing to listen to. He talks just as eloquently as he writes.

  • Is that man Robinho????

  • I don't agree with James Baldwin's view on Malcolm X and The Nation of Islam!!!

  • Why ?

  • Gigantic mind. Profoundly deep. I need to tap into this mind.

  • James Baldwin a optimistic powerful dude i'm honor that he was born a Black man

  • do you guys believe what he was saying about malcolm and martin?

  • @gabel13 it not so much that I believe it but that he gave a different perspective on the subject than the traditional view. And it is that, that I respect about the man. There was no right or wrong with him there was only what is. We need to begin to look at the moral fiber of this country once again because we have slipped way to low if you ask me.

  • A Beautiful Mind!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm reading his book 'Another Country'. The man is a genious. I find it really interesting that a lot of black history books have failed to include him. But he is a huge inspiration, and his legacy still lives on!

  • I feel so privileged to have watched this. Thankyou for speaking your mind Mr. Baldwin.

  • tremendously dignified. He had the self-respect and boldness to hold the American people accountable.

  • Classic...." I'm not a nigger, I'm a man. If think I'm a nigger it means you NEED it." Thanks for posting.

  • It's hard to listen to him and not feel, however superficially, his dispair. It's to some extent the definition of a good speaker.

  • Tupac said and i quote, "i wonder if heaven got a ghetto?" I beleive in my heart, that because of great black men such as Baldwin and countless others pre and post modern to our world how could it.

  • Dude inspires me to get my vocab up

  • Well, you can start upgrading your vocab by dropping the words 'Whatever!', 'like' and 'dude'. What is the other word you people like to use....? Oh yes, 'retarded'.

  • Whatever, dude.

  • Heres another word for you.... WANKER!!!

Now, go and look it up... DUDE!!!

    lol

  • Here's another word for you: irony. Now, go look it up, dude.

  • I'm not sure you know what irony means

    lol

  • I AM sure you're wasting your time with your tightly crafted, unpunctuated sentence and your txtspeak which you did not even bother to capitalise.

Incidentally, go Google Image Search "blue-footed boobies." You will find them more amusing than I am by a long shot, I'm sure.

  • Thank you for posting this. Thank you very much.

  • I think that James Baldwin distorts and misunderstands the message Malcolm tried to convey.

  • @ekornickey I think he does at this point...however, much later he got Malcolm and the Black Muslims right.

  • Once you understand the ancient Khemtic society then you undertand why Malcolm said we were better...Africans gave a GOD conscience, civilazation, math and sciences to the world..people sat at our feet to learn now we have been reduced to NIGGERS IN AMERICA ...

  • khadijahanwar,

There is truth in what you say, but of course it isn't that simple.

Egypt was a great empire with many amazing accomplishments. But like all great empires, it built itself up through exploitation and subjugation of its neighbors - other Africans.

And like other great empires, it became self-satisfied, stagnant and weak. It let itself fall behind technologically, and therefore was the agent of its own downfall.

  • khadijahanwar, (continued)

Which is of course not at all to excuse what Europeans did to Egypt and then later sub-Saharan Africa. Not at all.

My point is that Baldwin is correct. Any sense of moral superiority over some other nationality or race is a delusion. It leads some to complacency and others to outright brutality, and in the end will lead the deluded group to their own downfall.

  • I believe..Any great Empire, ..GOD has allowed to rule over his people is given a responsibility. They and their children will prosper as long as certain principals and values are adhered to.,to be just... honest and forthright with the Masses...Once that ceases to be a focus and goal... when greed and injustice becomes the main accomplishments...then that satanic rule will eventually be destroyed...mainly from within ..And that is the path that this great country of ours America is on..

  • Yes, unfortunately, America has much to account for and many here are traitors to the ideals of democracy and freedom.

Let us hope it doesn't come to violence again (as it did in the Civil War and then again with the civil rights movement), but if it does, let us also be ready to fight for the good and the right and make sure that again the forces of violent racism (for that's what the Obama hating is really about) can be crushed once and for all.

  • They are working WITHIN the constructs of a system.....

  • Few come as true as James Baldwin. A bona fide intellectual warrior.

  • And those are some true words.

  • his mind is in his heart

  • They should broadcast this interview simaltenously on every station. Especially his reponse to the last question. Amazzzing.

  • Baldwin looked like he was going through HELL. However, I was really impressed with the way he carried himself and his thought provoking answers.

  • Yes, it must have been a very emotional meeting with RFK. The Kennedy brothers were both liberals but were pretty out of touch at this point when it came to racism and civil rights.

I can't think of anyone better than James Baldwin, who had the great genius to speak searing truths in the most eloquent terms right off the top of his head, to meet with the attorney general.

Our country was so fortunate to have Baldwin as a native son.

  • a prophetical voice.

let us not forget that it never was a black and white country.

for instance, chicanos were here a long long long time tambien guey.

    even before beck 8-p

  • A lot of people don't like to heard that but it is true. Chris Rock said it best. Latinos are invading the country. We moved the boarder. People are fooled by that go West young. Most of that area wasn't US territory. It was taken by force.

  • To bad interviews are no longer like this anymore. 1 man and his voice. No gimmicks of editing just straight forward and to the point.

  • I was thinking the very same thing as I watched the interview. We never have honest, earnest question and answer interview shows like this anymore. I don't know where this interview was aired, but it is a treat to see today after so many decades. I'm not a smoker but I even love that both Baldwin and Clarke smoked during the interview. There's something so genuine. Baldwin is lovely to watch with all his mannerisms and angst. Why haven't we produced another like him since?

  • HUH? Surely you can't be serious when u state "Why haven't WE produced another like this"...There are plenty...he also wears his sexuality on his sleeve, that also explains his mannerisms...he is once again he is one of the many diverse BLACK PEOPLE

  • If we have produced many like Baldwin, I'd like to know where I can find them. And about his sexuality, I don't get your point. Most of us have mannerisms connected to our sexuality. Baldwin was an openly gay man (at a time when it was very costly to be so); most people are openly straight. So what?

  • From 5:30 to 7:08 is so prescient and profound. You can almost see and feel the love and anxiety in his response.

    "I can't be a pessimist, because I'm alive."

  • @agibby03 You felt it too!! Yes! Oh my God, my heart sears with tears from the truth, love and sorrow of that moment. I absolutely love James Baldwin. He was a true prophet.

  • was James Baldwin friends with Malcom X

  • 45 years old and still true--how shameful for all of America regardless of race or ehtnicity. Antihostile you8 are one morfe good person for having posted this and the other videos you have uploaded. Thanks to you very much for this great service you are doing.

  • Dear Antihostile,

Thanks very much for all the videos you've uploaded.

    Sincerely,

    EyeLean

  • Amazing man...

  • The moral of this conservation still served true in this day, 2008....what a shame.

  • Yes, but things are better, there can be no doubt of that.

It is up to all of us to see they continue to improve. Electing a black man to the presidency is all well and good but we must not forget the little black children in the poor neighborhoods (and I live in Trenton so I see them all the time) they still need us to work for justice for them.

  • I love everybody!

  • Because Tomstrong08 the Black intellectuals said the hell with getting assassinated by the government ,like X, MLK, BPP, etc!

  • True! But its time 2 fight back!

  • Thanks 4 posting!!!

  • Awesome!

  • Wow. Thanks for posting this interview!

  • Why was there such a gap from the end of the civil rights era to the rise of Barack Obama? During that period there were almost no intelligent, reasonable, or charismatic black leaders.

  • For some black leaders, fighting racism began to become a business. They profited off of people's pain. Not to mention many black "leaders" began to integrate with Democratic party (who are as bad as the GOP). The media appointed people such as Jackson & Sharpton as "leaders." For many gullible blacks, they believed it. There also been a suppression of diverse ideas. Many blacks believe the church & mosque have the answers. There are many areas in the community that have not been tapped yet.

  • Unfortunately you're right. It's really sad that guys like Sharpton and Jackson were appointed the go-to guys for any black media story. I've always thought that a black president could've happened sooner if it hadn't been for guys like that.

  • do you know how many blacks are below the poverty line in america. You are looking at a mulatto for the indication of where life is going for black america. You are soooooooooo stupid. Dont let me get out the stats, and shut you up...you white loving asshole

  • Comment removed

  • I never understood why black people are so negative towards Jackson and Sharpton. What have they done wrong to deserve such condemnation. The problem with black people is that they don't know how to trust and put faith in their leaders. Self-appointed or unintentionally appointed. How are we ever suppose to progress as a people if we tear each other down so damn much?

  • either you are an authentic leader, regardless of your color, or not. personally, i think that sharpton, jackson, and farrakhan are all sell-outs. plain and simple. just because they are "black leaders" doesnt mean that we have to support them. i only support authentic "black" leaders like malcolm x.

  • Think carefully about what you're saying. There seems to be an unconscious need to accept dead leaders because to accept a living leader is too much to hope for. I understand. I don't put all my hopes on 1 person either because they are human afterall but I listen and accept parts of what each says and respect their efforts because they are targets on behalf of black people, wether they are loved or not by black people. Ultimately we need to be responsible for ourselves.

  • i know exactly what im saying. its foolish of you to make an assessment on my mind when you have no idea of who i am. I reject all politicians in the U.S. govt, and i do not accept hypocritical religious uncle toms like farrakhan, sharpton, jesse jackson, or any other "black leader" i believe in self-determination, which is what malcolm stood for. all "black" politicians are sell-outs to the white power structure. if they really cared, the problem would be solved. end of story.

  • I agree to an extent ...if the Sharpton's, Farrakhan's jesse's NEVER spoke then there would be NO VOICE for the voicless Do you think MY OPRESSOR will SPEAK for me on any level?. Africans in this country are MADE MEN Mentally...Someone has to speak for and to those in POWER please don't talk that self determination stuff If we were NOT determined we'd be DEAD from the middle passages, slave trade, lynching, acceptable LAWS like Jim Crow, BLACK CODES, COINTELPRO so that's NOT the END OF STORY!!!

  • our condition lasted so long because of the sharpton's, jesse's etc. these so-called black leaders are literally sellouts. im a journalist in new york city and ive interviewed many politicians and they are liars. coldblooded liars. black religious uncle toms, black politicians, and white politicians are all the same thing. this is more than color, its class as well. the real leaders were either killed or in prison.

  • ...BUT they are working WITHIN the constructs of A SYSTEM. Harriet Tuban once said "I could have free 100,000 more slaves had I just been able to convince them that they were slaves" that is 1 of the most POWERFUL statements ever made. That's why our condition has lasted so long We NOR the majority of the WHITE population has NO clue to who we really are! Of course it's about the have and have NOTS on a higher level but you can't see it because of ALL of the BUFFERS like sexism, rascism etc.

  • overall, we just have to continue to struggle for our freedom. i understand what you mean. but i still thinks its relevant to make a distinction between geniune leaders and corrupt puppet leaders. i agree with you. we just have to learn from the mistakes and correct them for the future generations until we attain our true freedom and peace. some leaders made mistakes, and some were on point, so we learn from both and move on. but i agree with you. i know things are better than in the 60's etc.

  • The problem with Jackson and Sharpton is that the only reason they're considered black leaders is because they lived during the time of King and Malcolm X. This doesn't make them leaders, just primary sources. They haven't learned the lessons of King or Malcolm X's later message and that's why many people can't relate to them. People are supposed to choose their leaders, it can't work the other way around.

  • yes many idiots believe the world was made in 6 days. go screw off dumbass

  • FYI...There Are Thousands of Barack Obama's in the Black Community. Most are put in a box by all the "ism's" that we battle daily; don't get it twisted.

  • Well, that's exactly the point. Newsweek and MSNBC don't tend to call up those guys.

  • i dont get what the problem is.......if the black muslim movement does bring about a reverse burbingham....it should. Do you know how many rapes of children, women ......killings....and they got away with it. That should not be....revenge is needed, so they know they cannot do it ever again

  • what are you saying

  • your a dumbass

  • great answer shows the world where your headed

  • yup just got into nanotechnology engineering.......what about you? your nothing but a house negro. your from haiti huh, heard they like light skin blacks better than your ass........go marry a white girl thats all your good for bro

  • why are you making it a race issue? what makes me a house negro? my good man you have a long way to go. my mother is white so theres no need to be disrepectful.

  • lol i didnt make it a race issue dude IT IS A RACE ISSUE. Before i was brought onto this earth it was a race issue. lol you need help

go masturbate .......leave intelligent humans alone

  • nothing you have typed has been intelligent,,,,,its people like you who help perpetuate the race issues of this world.

  • how do you perpetuate race issues?

  • by writing the types of things that you do.

  • no what perpetuates race issues are black poverty, welfare system, white racism, lack of fathers in black communities, capitalism, high percentage of black males in jail....i can go on and on hunny bun

  • no. you make things race issues when you throw racial slurs in your every response.

  • i think you should read my responses again

  • What did I miss that he said???? Because the truth HURTS and makes people uncomfortable RACE has NEVER been dealt with in this COUNTRY

AND it needs to so we can GO forward.. REAL HONEST progress IS... DIALOGUE not pretending....... RACE was a problem before kRAZY got on the planet!!!.

  • No disrespect but you must not be in touch with your blackside if you really don't understand what's going on here

  • Naw don't be upset...I understand you u

  • I appreciate your comment because it is true....however, we I don't think we are evil enough to do to them what they did to US.
