Very funny man. He wasnt a racist, he grew up with racist jokes in the working mens clubs and it kinda stuck to him that style. Im black and i went to see him many times. If a comedian takes the piss of an american nobody minds, joke about a paki and all hell breaks lose in the media. People should lighten up and just laugh and laugh. Let me make my positions clear. Manning was, I believe, hugely talented. His timing, command of a room, and understanding of his audience should be a lesson to all comics. Some of his material was, in fact, really clever (there's a gag about Bisto in Spain I am fond of), but he represented a time when casual racism was considered fine. It's not. Also, his style, even by 1980, was desperately old fashioned. He quite rightly fell of the TV scrhedules in the 1980s.

You're Irish. I want you to know Bernard's act wasn't what you think it was. He was very popular with the Irish community here in Manchester (and it is big). My grandparents are from Galway Bay and Tipperary. His act wasn't racist, either. His audience considered it an honour to have the piss ripped out of them by Bernard. People who diss Manning just because he took the mickey out of other races, as he does with Irish, Scottish, Mancs, Welsh, should get a life. They are obviously too depressed and complicated sitting infront of their facebook accounts, twitter, etc. to find any enjoyment out of the simpler things in life. Bernard had a heart of gold. He is one of the funniest stand up comics of all time. He even had black and asian fans. Maybe he should have played sick prank phone calls on defenceless old guys?

There were of course many problems then, but in 2010 the very fabric of our nation has crumbled. Let me make my positions clear. Manning was, I believe, hugely talented. His timing, command of a room, and understanding of his audience should be a lesson to all comics. Some of his material was, in fact, really clever (there's a gag about Bisto in Spain I am fond of), but he represented a time when casual racism was considered fine. It's not. Also, his style, even by 1980, was desperately old fashioned. He quite rightly fell of the TV scrhedules in the 1980s.

The Comedy Store, when it was foounded in 1979 did indeed have an anti-racist agenda, and Manning would not have been welcome to perform (they were also against traditional gags), but in no way did they deny Manning freedom of speech - they did not have that power, nor should they.
Manning's act, which I saw several times, was technically highly accomplished but was virulently racist.
You are quite wrong, about Elton and Manning.

You're Irish. I want you to know Bernard's act wasn't what you think it was. He was very popular with the Irish community here in Manchester (and it is big). My grandparents are from Galway Bay and Tipperary. His act wasn't racist, either. His audience considered it an honour to have the piss ripped out of them by Bernard. And that, on occasion included black blokes too, who got the joke. Please don't be misled by the YouTube clips which are entirely misleading.

Bernard Manning was NOT a racist !! He was a comedian that told jokes.... and they were jokes about anyone or anything, but that is what they were - JOKES.
Behind the facade, Bernard was one of the nicest people you could meet.
He said on numerous occasions:- "They are jokes, never take them seriously".
