Carmem geralmente é representada por mulheres morenas - seja Carmem seja uma cigana, pois que isso aí não é Bizet< as mulheres espanholas geralmente são morenas, Elina está mais para uma Valquiria! Mas está magnifica!
Brava, brava, brava. As a queer, I can tell that her jewelry is expensive. Understand what the music is about its about being out there and being alive. We all wanted to feel like rockstars at one time or another. And I would suspect that maybe this was intended at a non-american audience. It has a high fashion kind of look. But it's her voice and her interpretation.

El Vito pertenece a la música tradicional Andaluza, no tiene nada que ver con las habaneras. Por cierto, canta en en español aunque no se le entiende. Recomiendo la versión de Teresa Berganza.
El Vito belongs to traditional music from Andalusia, Spain. This song is nothing to do with Habaneras. She sings in Spanish nevertherless is not very clear. Teresa Berganza makes one version highly recommeded.
What a waste of her time and talent. Whoever convinced her that this was a good idea should be fired. Was it the same person that does not know how to focus a video camera perhaps?
Spanish theme with French Lyrics you mean. I have noticed that French Operas tend to have a lot of passion in them! Les Filles De Cadix is another passionate Song too!

@veganazi Well... Carmen wasn't really an angel and is described (atleast in the book from merimee) as a very lustful and sensual woman who had quite a lot of sex ;) So I don't think it's a huge step from that to a Porn star xD But of course everyone can have a different opinion, but I myself don't think that the video is all that bad :)

Actually it's a popular spanish song called "El vito", probably original from Andalusia.
Several musicians made arrangements of the melody, even Sarasate "deconstructs and recycles" it towards the end of his "Romanza andaluza".During the Spanish civil war the antifascist troops changed the text to make a song called "El quinto regimiento"
This art song arrngement is by Fernando Obradors:
/watch?v=eAKPWxcnDas
but if you search on YT you will get many other arrangements
@Jarajofife hate to correct you but the arrangement that Elina is singing too isnt arranged by Obradors...he originally composed "El Vito" for voice and piano
Perhaps I wasn't very clear in my previous comment, sorry.I didn't meant this arrangement E.G. in this DGG cvideosings was by Obradors, but the one corresponding to the code I posted below his name (YT doesn't allow to post URL so I posted the "suffix" to paste after the "com" part in your browser's address box)
Oh, and don't hate to correct me if you think I'm wrong, but I'm not, :p.
Seriously, "El vito" has been a well known traditional popular song in Spain for generations. Obrador wrote the arrangement that has become more famous in art music, but he didn't compose it.
It is said that García Lorca collected "El vito" along with many other southern spanish popular songs (he even recorded it in the 1920s o 30s on the piano accompaining a singer), but I don't know if that's true.
Of course I mean "collected for the very first time". Besides being one of the innovators in XX century poetry and theatre he was a decent pianist and did a kind of ethnomusicological collection of popular songs acros many villages in Andalusia.
Here you can listen to a much less "professional" version than Obradors':
@Jarajofife I know Obradors...and I know EL VITO...I perform is frequently for auditions :] all I said was this arrangement wasnt his :] and El Vito (as with many other spanish works) was a poem and Obradors set it to music haha although I find the text funny lol
I know this not a forum, so excuse me for writting this much.
Yes, yes, this arrangement isn't the one by Obradors, I told it before; I was referring to the video which link I posted, that one by Teresa Berganza, that's the famous Obradors' arrangement. But no, Obradors didn't compose the music. Every spaniard who has a slight knowledge of their floklore knows "El vito" too, but more significant, almost every spanish grandmother born at the beginning of the XX century knew it
.. and sung to their grandchildren like mine did to me some decades ago.
Here's a list of traditional songs the musicologist Juan Tomás collected in a field work through north Castille in 1947; "El vito" is nº 102; although, I repeat, it is said to have an andalusian origin.
funjdiaz. net /folklore /07ficha. cfm?id=2471 (in spanish)
But if you don't want to believe these documents either I think you at least will have to admit dates: I don't know the date Sarasate wrote his "Romanza andaluza", a piece inspired in andalusian popular music, but it is his op. 22; his catalogue contains 55 opus, so most probably "RA" wasn't composed very near his death, in 1908, Obradors was born in 1897.
It can be seen that Holger Hage nowhere trained and is shitty filmmaker! Backgrounds are terrible, stupid drama and choreography, inability to work with colors and the camera and, finally, stupid stylist and hairdresser. Bad, bad, bad. Wonder how much he had received for that shit. Just singing and sound is good but this is not his merit.
Despite all the negativity, I like this video. She is portraying someone other than herself, so the movement and sensuality will be different. Also, as someone who is young and only got into opera because of one of her performances, I like the video because it is unique and not stereotypical of what my age group imagines opera to be. I state all in this with a humble opinion. :)
I am in awe about Elina's musical accomplishments, but I am very much disappointed with this video. It is the kind of video that we expect from all those in the entertainment industry who would go nowhere without the support of a huge hype machine behind them (not to speak of amplification systems), not from one of today's greatest singers. I am happy that this will be only a CD, not a DVD full of such clips; we will be able to focus on what is essential.
This is a hot mess. Lazy choreography, but most of all, lazy styling. It's like when I pack my suitcase to fast and everything goes in. That the hell is with the hair AND the jewelry AND the eyeliner. It's just all too much. Garanca, baby, I know you've got this cool collected, not-crazy-diva personality, but don't let them send out out there looking like that... Blech.
Bravo, Elina, for the courage and for the portrayal! Those who moan about the video or looks - come on - it's just a small video - a role among many roles, looks she have had, both with wigs and without wigs - not an audiovisual genre that Elina is going to focus from now :) Elina is a unique artist! Having had a priviledge to hear the CD - be prepared for an amazing spectrum and range of music (and even singing) styles, characters , emotions - from light to very dark, tender and passionate.
Shit, her career was too flawless... Well, every great artist has his/her slips. Agree with what NouvelleMatiere said: great music, abhorrent video. Let's hope that she doesn't keep that outrageous Lady Gaga look much longer... *shudders*
Absolutely agree with NouvelleMatiere!!!! Saw Garanca recently on stage and her presence is enchanting and definitely draws you to watch, but NOT like this video!
"See the music clip here to have a first glimpse of the music." How ironic, considering the music is the last thing this clip wants you to focus on. If you know anything about Garanca, you'll find the "choreography" embarrassing because her natural sexiness is miles away from these wannabe sexy popstar moves. Also, she looks nothing like herself in this video, a pity considering how fantastically beautiful she is. At least I won't have to watch this when I listen to the CD.
besides this is just one visual representation of the music. We Opera buffs know that this image is not befitting of her temperament but that doesnt mean she has to conform to our standards, she has the right to step outside the box, especially if its for the sake of art. I'd be worried if all her projects were like this but they aren't. Having said this, I still think she could improve her enunciation; I am fluent in Spanish and I cant make out all the words. Oh and I think she looks pretty :)
lol my first impression of this was similar to a lot of the comments below...I thought 'wow they certainly went a little overboard with this' but on second thought it occurred to me: she is an Opera Diva so why the hell not? If anyone has the right to look pretty and glamorous its her...Opera singers work their butts off for like ten years in conservatories in order to master this art form! Why should all those talentless hacks who sing pop get to have fun and not her?
@operagirlify THATS YOUR TRUTH, NOT MY TRUTH, FOR ME (AND IS MY PERSONAL OPINION) ELINA IS NOT PRETTY, NO SEXY, she dont make me desire her, ANNA do that!!
please be realistic?? :S which reality, yours or mine?
Well, I can`t understand why everyone is so pissed??
Spanish songs are NOT Mozart or Bellini! It`s all about passion, emotions, love, hate, man & woman! It`s wild! It`s vital! Maybe even brutal...... And this video shows it all! Spanish music is not about what is or not right! It`s about how you feel smthng at some moment.
When Garanča sung Carmen at the MET, you all were amazed! And the visual aspect of this video and Carmen are in some way similar... She`s just blond here! :)
@bltmz23 Agreed! The people that try to ignore the fact that 99% of opera plots are driven by SEX are just stubborn and/or ignorant. This is CARMEN, she's a sultry gypsy!!! Really, what do you expect?
forget the video, it\s too embarrassing for words, the song is overdone too. she has no idea how to sing these types of songs. why doesn't she record something latvian?
@nyorker218 Thanks. IMHO EG would be a superb Carmen in a tasteful, intelligent, modern production instead of stereotypical Gypsy, oversexed and very often vulgar portrayal. Carmen is beautiful and sexy because she is smart and knows her power. EG got all, no need to make her into something she is not. IMO.
DG is doing a great job with the other videos but they lost their minds here. The aesthetics of the images remind me of some latin-american soap operas. You know, Pasion de Gavilanes and alikes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Elina Garanca has a voice for the ages and is a world-class beauty who radiates intelligence, humor and a powerful sexuality. However, I wish this video had taken a subtle approach so that we would have been drawn in gradually and engaged emotionally. The "less is more" approach is much more powerful ultimately, especially when you want the video to display gifts as rare as Ms. Garanca's to their best advantage.
what's with the image change? I like the voice and music but I don't care for the over-the-top makeup, overdone sensual gestures and bedroom eyes. Makes it look like a muted pop video matched with a classical track. :/

Jarajofife 1 year ago
@Jarajofife

Also a brief article on the hispanic Wikipedia.

I did enjoy her beauty end her voice, sure the clip is kind of kitschig, but think she's only playing a role, like in any opera.
InternetFrame 1 year ago

Blech.

The text of the song (~):
An old woman is worth a real
and a young girl two cuartos,
but as I am so poor,
I go for the cheapest.
On with the dancing,
on with the dancing, ole!
Stop your teasing, sir,
else I'll blush!

WTF??????
Shit, her career was too flawless... Well, every great artist has his/her slips. Agree with what NouvelleMatiere said: great music, abhorrent video. Let's hope that she doesn't keep that outrageous Lady Gaga look much longer... *shudders*

Oh and I think she looks pretty :)
jgdmol4l 1 year ago
lol my first impression of this was similar to a lot of the comments below...I thought 'wow they certainly went a little overboard with this' but on second thought it occurred to me: she is an Opera Diva so why the hell not? If anyone has the right to look pretty and glamorous its her...Opera singers work their butts off for like ten years in conservatories in order to master this art form! Why should all those talentless hacks who sing pop get to have fun and not her?
jgdmol4l 1 year ago
nobody equals the beauty and sex appeal of Anna Netrebko, good try Elina Garanca, but nope, you are not pretty, no sexy, sorry.
i have the baden concert with Anna Netrebko, Ramon Vargas, Lodovic Tezier and you..you look like a wax museum figure.

@BenWagnerFan OK THAT'S A LITTLE HARSH.
I am a BIG Anna fan so I 'm not trying to say that Anna is not sexy and hot.
I just think you have to be realistic. And tell the truth: ELINA IS SEXY.
.
operagirlify 1 year ago
@operagirlify THATS YOUR TRUTH, NOT MY TRUTH, FOR ME (AND IS MY PERSONAL OPINION) ELINA IS NOT PRETTY, NO SEXY, she dont make me desire her, ANNA do that!!
please be realistic?? :S which reality, yours or mine?
BenWagnerFan 1 year ago
Well, I can`t understand why everyone is so pissed??
Spanish songs are NOT Mozart or Bellini! It`s all about passion, emotions, love, hate, man & woman! It`s wild! It`s vital! Maybe even brutal...... And this video shows it all! Spanish music is not about what is or not right! It`s about how you feel smthng at some moment.
When Garanča sung Carmen at the MET, you all were amazed! And the visual aspect of this video and Carmen are in some way similar... She`s just blond here! :)
bltmz23 1 year ago 38
@bltmz23 Agreed! The people that try to ignore the fact that 99% of opera plots are driven by SEX are just stubborn and/or ignorant. This is CARMEN, she's a sultry gypsy!!! Really, what do you expect?
OperaLord 1 year ago
@bltmz23 Sorry. This video is nothing but cheap stereotype. She is a wonderful singer and surely her production team can do better than this.

However the music is awesome.

Garanca's to their best advantage.
cynthiayockey 1 year ago
what's with the image change? I like the voice and music but I don't care for the over-the-top makeup, overdone sensual gestures and bedroom eyes. Makes it look like a muted pop video matched with a classical track. :/
