I took was stationed on Okinawa 1961-1963 and took the Ferry to Ie and climbed to the top of the mountain. I still have color slides from my trip there, including photo of the Ernie Pyle memorial.
From Wiki, "Common names: Habu,[2] Okinawa habu,[3] yellow-green tree viper,[6] Okinawan habu, Kume Shima habu (for T. f. tinkhami).[4]"
Note: "yellow-green tree viper", therefore, the snake that fell out of the tree in this video may very well have been a Habu. I don't like venemous snakes, have had close encounters and seen someone get bit by a rattler. Pooh on venomous snakes.
HI I spent 7 years on Okinawa in the Air Force. I loved it there. We went to IE Jima And sat at the very place you made this video. I miss it and would to go back someday Thanks for the memories!!!
Thanks for posting! I'd always wondered what Ie Island looked like. I only saw it from the Okinawan mainland. It's a lot more developed than I'd thought.
I was there for 30 days in Nov 1981. I was marine stationed at camp foster. We did so bulldozer work, there was a air force base on Ie-Jima bace then. The air force fed us well.
yea im a marine stationed on that island now,i love it it so nice.i go snorkeling scuba diving exploring the caves and collect war artifacts like bullets. i been all thru ie jima i could tell u anything. the golf course is pretty nice too with a great restaurant located on the golf course.i think its the best on the island
I enjoyed watching your video. I was stationed on Ie Shima in 1967-68.. I didn't notice it on your video, but on google earth I can see a golf course on the Island.. If we would have had the links there back in the 60's I might have reenlisted.... ;)
i couldn't see the head of that snake (which is a sure way to determine habu or non) but the pattern appeared to be habu-like. there are a few different species of habu on the islands, however this looked like a commmon habu.
wow. great to see that! my family is from that island :) i was born in okinawa as well. i am an okinawan-american singer in the u.s. you can check out my videos on my page here if you like.
Glad you liked it. I'm working on my last Okinawa video today - 25: Peace Memorial. I'm excited to finish it up. Don't forget to tune in in a day or two and check it out.
Ie-jima was a lot of fun. I wish I could have spent more time there.
I love Okinawa. I am Taiwanese American. I think your family made a mistake moving to the US, America is going down! One day I want to live in Okinawa.
Sou do Brazil e estive em Iejima no ano de 2000, em um periodo de 3 meses, onde conheci sua cultura, o lugar, clima, as pessoas. Ver este filme me traz muitas lembraças... boas!!!!
I had spent some time on Ie-Jima back in the mid 80's while serving in the Marine Corps. We would stay at the small U.S. Air Force Base while we were there. We invited a group of islander onto the base one night for a softball game, then dinner and drinks afterwards. We sat in the small bar that they had in the barracks and taught the Japanese guys how to shot gun a beer. The next night the Japanese men returned and took us all out for dinner and drinks.
That was the finest travelogue about the snakes of Ie Jima I've seen this year! Way to go, James. I thought you were in real trouble when the snake fell out of the tree.
i grew up in okinawa on the air force base. watching your videos brings back so many memories for me.

I bet it was a southeast island python. I saw one in Yomitan and killed it when I showed it to my Okinawan neighbor he told me what it was. Whoops.

Actually, the habu snake is "venomous" not poisonous.
