If you are referring to this one circumstance, they are not asking them to stop them from "blocking the recruiting center" as you suggest. At this point the recruiting center was not being "blocked". They are asking the police to use their power to remove the protesters form an entire area, some of it being open field, because they think because they acquired a "permit to gather" & a "permit to allow amplified music" that they rented space in the city that is specifically theirs. This is untrue.
If you read the permit, it does not specify anyone having sole control or occupation of any given space nor does it specify that any member of the opposition groups nor any specific citizens remain outside any specified boundary lines. These people live in this city. They pay city, state and federal tax. They are allowed on any public property they choose. To believe or try to enforce or hire any enforcement of other than that would be insane and fascist.
Even the anti-war protesters filed a complaint against the Berkeley PD for passive law enforcemnt at the Feb 12 demonstrations. Their complaint was heard before the Berkeley Police Review Commission and now officers are less inclined to stand "neutral."
