How the hell do you guys tune your snare drums?! TEACH ME! Please make a video tutorial with "how to tune snare drum" - your snares always sounds like a dream!
@JonesSs1993 Thanks! Most of the drums have the bottom tuned up pretty high and will stay that way with all the different tunings. Then the top is tuned with equal tension on all the lugs.
i've played for about 15 years and i have played a variety of different kits with different woods and dimensions. GRETSCH is by far, the best snare manufacturer that I've come across. very nice snare here. i'll be watching your ebay store closely.
oops I hit "dislike" by mistake -- because of themes installed on computer (there's a "like" in a box with blank box next to it. the blank box is the "dislike" button. I apologize. This drum has nothing unlikable about it.
I know what you mean about the 8x14 snares. All I get anymore are custom snares that are all 8x14, because I just love the tones pulled out of them. I really can't wait to get my next snare, which is going to be an 8x14 solid brass shell. I've only ever heard one before, and boy does it crack.
however trying to a/b snare drums would be much easier if you would use the same mic and mic technique...
I've just watched 3 different vids (dunnett 14x8, brady 14x8, and this one), and I've seen a sm57, an audix, and a room mic(assumed, because there is no mic in sight) respectively.
This makes it very difficult to know whether the difference in sound is due to the drum, the mic, or the mic proximity. Same preamp for all compression?
The audio recordings up to this point have been a lot of trial and error. No preamps. Just a mic plugged into a Sony HD camera. The room mic seems to work the best. We've got a ton of new ones coming up, we'll do our best for you all.
Even though I could never afford these snares, I always watch these videos.

even with a drum that big, the "lower tuning" still sounds like a piccolo
calebrosazza 5 months ago
@calebrosazza Actually, that's largely due to the miking techniques that Shane uses.

Nice demo. Very helpful to demonstrate the various tunings. It seemed to "choke off" a bit on the hight end. Low and medium was sweet. Nice drum.
