If you like historical fiction, which as I can see from your videos you do, you might want to check out A Game of Thrones from The A Song of Ice and Fire series by George r r Martin. It's takes place in medieval times, and it's about the struggle to to keep or achieve power, it's incredibly realistic, and it's an excellent book it's quite long, so you really have to love reading to get into this. Also the character development is so amazing, best I've ever read.
I'm from Italy and I go in Sardinia every summer, I have a house there. It is really beautiful, and the sea is just amazing. Hope you will enjoy sardinia :)
You should come to Croatia on vacation during the summer! It's great here, we have Adriatic Sea, you could rest, relax and see lot of cultular things. :)
Saint Germain on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich was the best club! I literally went there every weekend but it does have more mainstream music. There is also Indochine, which as an asian theme decor and a good mixture of music. You can go to encore...
so many others but these are all in Zurich so im not sure how close you are. I also know lots of good bars in Zurich where the atmosphere is very eclectic or chic or anything you really want. If need places let me know
I read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan a couple years ago and its one of my favorite books, im glad you liked it. I have Water for Elephants but I havent read it yet.
Can I suggest Corsica to you for your relaxing vacation? It is the island above Sardinia and is way more lush and green than Sardinia. Corsica is French but more Italian in atmosphere and food. On the eastside you have the most idillic beaches, the westside is more rough. It's just a gorgeous place to go.
i read snow flower and the secret fanthis last summer and went and then read her book called shanghai girls I would totally recommend that as well:) I loved water for elephants as well...I am a little concerned about the movie though:( They never do the books justice.
When you were explaining Water for Elephants , it reminded me of Carnivale, an older HBO show that I absolutely loved! It was also based during the Great Depression and about the travelling circuses, although the plot is a lot different! That book sounds great I think I'm going to pick that up. Oh and I love your nailpolish!
2. I'll have to read Snow Feather and the Secret Fan, because I loved Memoirs.
3. If you like memoirs and life stories, and don't mind somewhat tragic, but definitely home-hitting tales, I would suggest Milkweed, a historical fiction by Jerry Spinelli, and Night, a memoir by Elie Weisel. Both are about WWII Holocaust survivors. My personal fave book, though, is Vampire$ by John Steakley. Decently graphic, but an excellent, excellent read.
love your channel can you do more things on this channel as l like hearing about other things in your life. your very interesting to what the river runs deep with liebe beth
So glad you're doing these book reviews, I've gotten so many books on my to read -list because of you :) I think you might like the Shadow of the wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, it’s really fascinating. The storyline is kinda complex, so I don't know how to fit it in one comment. There's a little bit of mystery and magic and a hint of a love story. This comment from amazon sums it up perfectly I think: "I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for one of the best reads of their life."
My great grandmother had her feet bound and it sounds extremely horrible. Apart from tightening the cloth from time to time, they have to put glass shards on their feet for it to rot so that they can crush the bones and let the feet be a mere 3 inches long. And the women could hardly walk after that!
OMG the mortal instruments is REALLY good :) You should read that series! But then it is more on the supernatural and romance side, I'm not really sure if you'd enjoy it though, but it is very VERY addictive.
i'm mad for amazon. don't know what i'd do without it. there is an amazing book called, "the seventh daughter". in essense it's a cookbook but it is actually about the author, cecelia chiang, and is a chronicle of her life and follows her and her sister's escape from china after the japanese invasion. from a pampered background, her mother was one of the last generation to have bound feet. it is an amazing story with some great recipes included. read on and good luck with everything.
Haha! This is so funny! We are also saving up for a house/apartment and we're also planning two holidays for this summer -- and guess what! For a superrelaxing holiday we're planning to go to Sardinia too. :D This is so cool! :D
I have "Water for Elephants" that I bought a while back but I procrastinate a lot. Now, I'm more eager and excited to finally open it & start reading. Thanks for the reviews~
Didn't you say you and your boyfriend have been together for many years... long enough to have a common law marriage? Any plans to get married officially?
I love to hear you speak about other stuff then beauty ( i love the beauty side of you btw) it's refreshing to see a beautiful women have some intellect as well. Keep it up Julia! You're subbies adore you!
HAHA I laughed so hard when you talked about the font sizes... also...I love love love watching your videos on this channel. I really love your energy and positive view on life, and watching your videos really cheers me up:) so thank you:)
Thankyou Julia for the LitChats !!! I got the two Ken Follet books on your recommendation and just finished one - Pillars of the Earth. Enjoyed it alot ! Love your vlogs also :)
I've never been able to get into Audio Books... the voices never seem to work for me somehow. When I read a book, it's almost like a movie in my head and always works much better for me.
Love the LitChats! Have you ever considered purchasing an eReader? I'm contemplating purchasing one, but I know I'd miss purchasing actual books from the bookstore. :o) However, my husband and I are expecting our baby to arrive any day now and we are quickly running out of room to store much more of anything - and we have so many books that the eReader may work better for our situation or until we get a bigger house!
@MrMadi368 I have thought about it but I somehow don't like the feeling of reading books from a screen. It kind of hurts my eyes after a while… I trade books on a local trading site though for credits, which I can use to buy other things like DVDs or games or other books. That reduces some of the clutter.
Where do you go to trade books? This sounds like a great idea ...I have a couple of books that I would be willing to let go of in exchange for others.
@GloriousNonsense Well the site I use is only for Switzerland, but the USA has one called swaptree dot com I think, I'm not sure if there's a Canada branch.
I've read Memoirs of a Geisha and I loved it, so this book you're talking about sounds really interesting to me. Thanks for the reviews!! I like your second channel a lot, it shows how much more there is to you than make-up - you have a great personality!
Damnit u dont speak French, because I live in Québec city (I'm not sure if they sell it in France) but I have this book called "Fils de bourreau" by Patrick Gosselin and it's about the story of Patrick as a child because he was beaten by his father, and at the very end of the book, he explains how is his life now lol
@strawberrymargharita - Thanks! I assumed that was the spelling but I rather spell it from pronunciation where it can actually be understood then misspell it all 2gether. For some reason I need to see & hear someone teach the language. That's the problem I had w/ Rosetta Stone. It was an annoying voice that went w/ pictures. I rather someone say apple show an apple then tell me how to say it in the language I want to learn. That way I can watch their mouth when they form the words. But thanks!
@nebunikmititik1 I was thinking of reading the vampire diaries but I dont know where to start, could u tell me what the first book is called and how many are there?
@shebabe03 It depends where you are...In England or America or countries where english is the main language there are 6 original books : 1.The Awakening ; 2.The Struggle ; 3.The Fury ; 4.Dark Reunion ; 5.The Return : Nightfall ; 6.The Return : Shadow Souls
I live in Italy and here there are divided in 9 books...
Can you make videos on how to speak, spell, & read basic German? I just moved to Germany about 2 months ago and all I know is that Donkay (I'm sure that is spelled wrong) means thank you, Hollow (Again spelling off pronunciation) is Hello, & Cheers is like saying have a nice day. Of course I know some traffic signs b/c of getting a DL as well as common sense things.
I'm going to be here for 3 years, so I want to get started & Rosetta Stone doesn't work for me. I would really appreciate it.
@Raphaelx2ily it's "danke" and "hallo" ;) but I like the way you spelled it because it's always hard to explain German pronunciation to English speaking people via writing ;) you should go to a book store and look for langenscheidt dictionaries, they have one that's like "basic German" and things like that! hope this helped you!
I was wondering , when you moved to Switzerland were you already an EU citizen ? I want to move to Europe but every time i start reading what things you will need I get lost and scared.
the book about the chinese women seems to be very interesting. i think you are right about the foot binding, it stopped somewhat during the last century, but there are still women alive who have their feet like that. but it's so rare that even chinese people find it curious when they see an old lady with bound feet.
@Callisino The crazy thing is that it completely crippled women, they couldn't walk long distances anymore and had servants to help them. It meant they were also relegated to their homes and couldn't participate much in public life. Thank god it's not practiced anymore.
@TheThirdShift i have always been fascinated by this horrible practice- i learned about it in school -many years ago- and still like to research it. its so horribly depressing but so interesting. similarly have you heard about this sick practice done in japan - bonsai kittens? they put kittens in 'fun shaped' vase like things -hearts stars whatever- so the cat become that shape. how messed up is that? bc people think its 'cute' to have a custom shaped cat.. ugh.
I LOVE WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. One of my fav books i have ever read. I cant wait to see it translated to film. Everything about it is soo magical and beautiful
I think you mught like the Troy series by David Gemmell, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini or maybe The Circle Trilogy and the Key Trilogy by Nora Roberts
wooo i've always wanted to go to berlin! have fun!! also sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you listen to audio books do you just sit there and listen, or do you listen to them while doing other stuff? i feel like i wouldn't be able to pay attention haha. sometimes i zone out even when i'm actually reading >_>
I decided to give Water for Elephants a try, so I put it on hold at the library... I'll get it after 31 people read it ;-) haha! Clockwork Angel is pretty good.
okay, jetzt blicke ich nicht mehr durch :D Du kommst ursprünglich aus bayern, dann bist du mit deiner familie nach Kanada gezogen und dann bist du in die Schweiz gezogen? Oder sehe ich das falsch ? :D
I loved, loved Water for Elephants. I'm reading A Reliable Wife now and so far it's really good.

pinkychachacha 11 months ago
@pinkychachacha I think bonsai kittens turned out to be a myth/fake story spread on the internet.
lucifer1343 11 months ago
@pinkychachacha hehe the bonsai kittens was an Internet hoax from many years back, it's not real :)

I started the Water for Elephants audiobook but I can't really get into it, I don't like the audiobook version so I'll probably read the actual book!
perishednight 11 months ago
@perishednight Yeah sometimes audiobooks are not as good as the actual books, I'd give the book a try it's really good.

wooo i've always wanted to go to berlin! have fun!! also sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you listen to audio books do you just sit there and listen, or do you listen to them while doing other stuff? i feel like i wouldn't be able to pay attention haha. sometimes i zone out even when i'm actually reading >_>
megan235 11 months ago
@megan235 I usually listened to them while cleaning, cooking, or in bed before sleeping!

I don't have "Snow Flowers and the Secret Fan" at the local library why is the world so cruel T.T
fleetingray 11 months ago
@fleetingray It's Snow Flower, maybe the typo caused no results to come up?
TheThirdShift 11 months ago
@TheThirdShift it seems that I actually misspelled the author lol
then I suppose I'll read it <3.
thank you ^-^.

I decided to give Water for Elephants a try, so I put it on hold at the library... I'll get it after 31 people read it ;-) haha! Clockwork Angel is pretty good.
