  • This has ALWAYS been my favourite version.

  • I hope this makes it to Broadway in 2012, I'll be the first to buy a ticket

  • Thank you - all I could find were with Sarah Brightman singing - so very frustrating - I really missed the original and knew right away it was a different singer even 35 years later. I found out Andrew Lloyd Webber bought the rights and re-recorded the song with her vocals instead of Yvonne Elliman - that made me really angry, it is wonderful to hear the original... no one sings it like her and all the money and inflluence in the world can't buy her heartfelt beautiful rendition of this song..

  • HI NENES LA MEJOR MARIA MAGDALENA DE TODOS LOS TIMEPOS

    YA DIJE

  • FABULOUS...!!!

  • I don't like her voice. It's not as if she is really singing. It sounds out of tune.

  • @elianne44 Are you a complete itdiot? This is one of the most classic performannces ever! Not to mention how many years she protrayed this character. Obvidously you differ from all the critics and fans alike! Good deal! We don't need your opinon anyways!

  • Wow! a perfect interpretation of a beautiful song and voice

  • Isn't everything brought into perspective when she sings this song. All those who came after only pale in her shadow. When Tim Rice and Andrew Loyd Webber asked her to play Mary Madeline the original stage show. They knew exactly what they had found. The part was made for her. I've always loved you and your voice.

  • She's not just singing, She's acting, She's is feeling the role so deep, that is why her performance is perfect, She touches every fiber of my heart with this performance

  • Oh my. I've heard plenty of versions of this song and love them all but this is the first time I've heard this one (believe it or not). This is so hauntingly beautiful. Every note and word poured out with feeling and conviction. So, so beautiful.

  • "NADIE,..Y REPITO, NADIE CANTA ESTA CANCION, COMO LO HACE IVONNE ELLIMAN. BELLA...

  • No music necessary. Her voice and emotion are perfect.

  • Just incredible! There is something about her voice which really brings this song to life. Definitely one of the highlights of the musical.

  • Yvonne Elliman is the personification of love and wonder in this song. You could hear it even if you never saw the video.

  • Amazing, this song was #1 on the charts.

  • This is the original from Jesus Crist Superstar. I have the album and love it.

  • njoyed this great album in downloadmusic .im

  • pure genius !!

  • best cast EVER for j.c.s.

  • I remember seeing this original musical when I was in the 7th grade.....Ted Neeley....at the old Universal Amp before there was a roof..before it was in doors...awesome show,,,

  • saw this 3 times in the 70s she has a great voice. god would would love this

  • @Chuckles123thefish

"If you cannot bring yourself to believe what the Bible says, then what else is there left?"

    Thinking for yourself.

  • wonderful song! very good singer no doubt another filipino pride!

  • I love to listen to her sing this. If I heard it everyday I would only love it more.

  • What a beatiful voice, she is so good she even sang disco music, thanks Ms. Elliman for all the great performances you have give us.

  • Yvonne was definetly one of the most beautiful vocalist there ever was.. she has a voice like an Angel and the beauty of one as well..

  • Hello,

I have decided that this is not the best place for this discussion and that since neither of us are going to change our minds I am not going to engage in it anymore. I wish you peace and blessings. from Dancer

  • John 11:27 is another place in the scriptures where Jesus is called the Son of God. Jesus does not correct Mary Magdalene and tell her to call him God. John 20: 31 states that Jesus is the Son of God. If you cannot bring yourself to believe what the Bible says, then what else is there left? John 4: 24 says we must worship God with "spirit and truth". Truth is a key word. Satan is called the Father of the Lie. We cannot worship God if we do not worship him in spirit and

    "Truth". Can we?

  • The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

  • @DancesWithJoy If we love God, we will seek ways to find out what is true and what is false. Is Jesus, God? Did he say he was part of a Trinity? Why did he state that only his Father knew the Last Day spoken about in Matthew 24: 36? There are answers to every one of those questions, but you have to want to know the answers bad eough to seek them out. In saying that, I am not saying Jesus was not divine. He was from the heavenly realm. and is God's Son. But he was not God and is not God,

  • In fact, at John 20:17 (King James Bible) - "Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] MY God, and YOUR God." Hence if he were God the Father, as you suggest, then that scripture then Jesus words show this not to be true. Why would he call the Father - "my God" - if he were part of a trinity or was God the Father himself? Jesus was the Son of God, and not God Almighty

  • @Chuckles123thefish Hi there. I am really confused. You said that in the Bible Jesus never claimed to be God and I gave you Scriptures where He does exactly this and you reply that it is I saying it. It is not my words but His. I never said that Jesus is the Father. Also the word 'divine' means God so saying that Jesus is not God is saying that He is not divine.

  • I cannot post links here but one could check out the every student dot com site or radio bible class ministries which is r b c dot com and do a search for the subject. Peace

  • John 1:18 "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known."

John 10:30, 33 "I and the Father are one.” " “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

John 8:58 "“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

There are many more and the evidence of the life He lived and what He did.

  • Heard Yvonne sing this on the US David Frost talk show in ca 1970. Fell in love with her. Fell in love with music, at the age of 9. God Bless you, Yvonne.

And she still owns "Can't Find My Way Home. " Stevie Winwood wishes he could sing like that.

  • Whats it all about? The question still asked today.

  • Yes, this is one of the sgnature songs of this movie. I don't believe she had any romantic attachments to Jesus but she most definitely appreciated that he could see into her heart and see the real person inside. Many modern day commentators appear to be fixated on every relationship that Jesus had with others, as being of a sexual nature. That is the way people think today but serious bible students realise that Jesus was no ordinary man and his purpose here was not sexual. He came to save us

  • @Chuckles123thefish I think that one of the reasons that that heresy is so popular is because it degrades the LORD and makes Him either less divine or not divine at all. And of course if Jesus is not God then He is a liar or a lunatic or both and definately not someone to whom we should listen nor who has a right to tell us how to live.

  • @DancesWithJoy - I don't recall Jesus ever saying he was God. I do recal him saying his Father was greater than him and that he was going his way to the Father. I don't b elieve Jesus is God or ever set out to say he was God. The idea of Jesus being part of a trinity of three gods, i.e. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost is not suppported by the Bible. iT has its roots in pagan beliefs. Jesus was the Son of God.

  • @Chuckles123thefish Hi there. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. youtube is a difficult place to get into this as there is not much space. The Bible is very clear that Jesus did claim to be God. The religious leaders wanted to kill him for blasphemy and calling Himself God. There were wrong but not dumb. If they thought He called Himself God then He had. God is tri une and that is why some pagans have that concept they took it from the Truth. It was not the other way around.

  • @Chuckles123thefish There are dozens of Scriptures where Jesus says that he is God. Two of which are' I and the Father are one' and 'Before Abraham was I Am'. If one is interested in studying the real facts other then the Holy Word of course one can check out the writings of Josh MacDonald and Lee Strobel. Only God could save us. No human could do that. So God came in a human body to lead the rescue mission. "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God".

  • @DancesWithJoy Jesus himself said, with his own mouth, "the Father is greater than I". He also said that everything that he did, he did as the Father told him to do. He states many time the fact that the Father is greater than himself. That is not just me saying it. That is Jesus himself. He did not claim to be God. I suspect you have not studied enough about where your interpretation of the Scriptures came from, and so I guess you will have to see why Jesus said those things.

  • @Chuckles123thefish I respectfully suggest that you have not studied the Word enough. When Jesus was on the earth in a human body but still divine he had voluntarily laid aside His equality with the Father so when He made those statements it was not about His eternal status. Also saying that the Father is 'greater' than I is not that same as saying 'I am not divine'. The religious leaders wanted to kill him for claiming to be God. They were not stupid. If they said that He said that then He did.

  • @DancesWithJoy I never said that Jesus was NOT divine. I said that he was NOT God. In particular, he was not God the Father, as you call him. He states he is the Son of God, but never will you find in the Holy SCriptures, that Jesus said he was God. He is also not called the Sovereign of the Universe, the Creator or God Almighty. He is called a mighty God, but NOT Almighty God. I most certainly have studied God's Word. I can say without lying, that Jesus NEVER said he was God, as you do.

  • what a great song sung with a voice so true

  • just an incredable song, sung with such passion

  • , This is the first time Ive heard Yvonne Elliman, sing ,this song from Jesus Christ superstar ...".. I dont know how to love him" most original and heart felt, realistic and true....It was Great

  • simply beautiful

  • have to agree with ukbarton...Yvonne's is the definitive version of this song :)

  • Beautiful song ! ! !

  • She is soooooo great! Best performance EVER!!!! Yvonne 4ever!!! love it!

  • One of the best talents during the 70's, I was just in grade school then, but I can still remember how she made me love her songs. thanks for posting

  • The one and only!

  • When the singers were real singers, but, today a lot of plastic faces wihout any talent. Precious Yvonne.

  • Have you heard Sarah Brightman singing this?,...This version is awesome,too,...Speechless O.O

  • Song still brings tears to my eyes almost 40 years later! What an incredible vocal! She absolutely NAILS this song! It also describe very well the feeling you get when you first grasp who Jesus was, what he accomplished while here on earth and what he will do for mankind in the future. (Rev 21: 3 & 4) Breathtaking song!

  • I too, must add my voice to the supporters of this posting. I have, (ever since I first heard this song many years ago), always believed that this was Yvonne Elliman's 'life's work'. She has 'owned' it, she has lived it, she has breathed it. It is her's. Thank you, Yvonne, for the continuing legacy that lives on through your interpretive rendition of this song. It is yours, and you have made so many happy. No one will do it better in my lifetime for sure. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • At times the right singer is wed to the perfect song for them. This is one of those. She sings it the way the subject matter demands.

  • SIMPLY MAGNIFICENT INTERPRETATION!

    Can anyone say otherwise?

    Ivonne Elliman owns this song.

  • It seems as if this a person pleading to their Lord for help, pleading with humility, and being truthful.

  • Since the very first time I heard this song back in 1973 I knew NO ONE would never sing it better than Ivonne... she sings it angelical... superb... she owns it!

  • Every Play written by Andrew Lloyd Weber become a masterpiece and the artists who play the staring roles step up and deliver their own masterful performance. Yvonne Elliman, gave a priceless performance that is a masterpiece.

  • oh - such emotion - I'd love to be a part of that!

  • I remember when I was young, Yvonne this is your song.

  • Maybe there will come a day when the love that both Mary and Jesus had for each other, as I believe it really was, will be known...If so, it's meaning will be as wonderfully rich as this song itself is...Loved it then, love it still...

  • out of all the rock musicals this my favourite..she sings this song so beautifullly. well done yonnie..

  • Escucho a JONI MITCHELL y les digo que esta es una interpretación increible, y el acompañamiento es el preciso...una bellisima canción

  • Yvonne no es la que canta. Es su ALMA...y el sonido del bajo es increible

  • I agree shes the only one who sing it the only way but hey! is ok if other great singers destry it its their risk !!! I love Ivonee

  • I sooo love this song. I remember watching this movie. Yvonne just blew me away. My sister inlaw had the LP. I would just play this song over and over again. It gives me the chills just watching the clip again. It's just as good as it was back when I was 9 years old. Thanks you for posting this.

  • LoL! No-one sings this better then Yvonne. No-one. She has the voice for this song, as Carl Anderson had the voice for Judas and Ted for Jesus. It was a magic moment. The music was/is unbelievable and timeless, the cast for the album then the different cast for the movie were all untouchable. Ian Gillian also was untouchable as was Murray Head as Judas on the album. But I will always prefer Carl, but that time had the best versions of this. Yvonne had some deep emotion going on there.

  • @babystinky I gotta disagree Helen sing this song as well as Yvonne. Helen's version has a fuller sound to her voice.

  • is this from a movie?

  • @balance7235 Yes. Jesus Christ Superstar. Watch it. It's amazing.

  • Much better than Helen's version. (And that version ain't bad.)

  • απο τις πιο γλυκιες μελωδιες που εχουν γραφτει ποτε

  • Wow! Dynamite. She leaves ya breathless on this one.

  • Sorry folks, I have to agree. Yvonne OWNS this song! No one touches her voice in this one!

  • amen....................

  • what a tremendous voice Yvonne had here-wow!

  • love this love this

  • I think her version has the greater depth of emotion -- still get goosebumps after all these years.

  • and you can sing this better?

  • im not saying i can sing better than this im saying the blonde abba girl sings this song better than this.

  • my voice teacher has me singing this for auditions and stuff. i looove this song. her voice is so beautiful

  • She sang the role of Mary Magdalene in the original album of Jesus Christ Superstar and in the subsequent Broadway and film version, and achieved her first hit single with the ballad "I Don't Know How to Love Him".[1] The song was her first entry on the U.S. charts, peaking at #28 pop in 1971, although a cover version by Helen Reddy was a bigger hit. This performance led to a 1974 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.[1]

  • Comment removed

  • god she sounds beautiful.Yes, that is the right word. I did not think i just wrote what my mind said. Her sound is beauty

  • One song that Youtube was made for. You can surf version after version, getting everyone's take on an ALW classic. Since we're all weighing in, my vote is behind this version. Elliman absolutely melts my heart with every word. She does not deliver a weak line in the song, and no one bar none, delivers the bridge like she does (I never thought I'd come to this). BTW, she did my favorite disco song of the era, If I Can't Have you, and trust me, I hated disco. Secretly admired this one though.

  • Haha, I share your feelings about that song that was nice in spite of it being disco.

  • Yvonne Elliman is the original singer for this song. Helen Reddy recorded it the same year, 1971.

  • she is so good she looks great

  • Never even heard of this chick. Is she European? Helen Ready is the originator from my experience. I find this version okay, but not better that Sinead's, and on par with Helen's.

  • She was born in Hawaii,as far as I know. She did this in the movie "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 1973 I'm not sure if it was the original,it might be

  • This was live, presented by Andrew Lloyd Weber, in the early 70's. There was also a double record album Jesus Christ Superstar.

  • She's American from Hawaii.

  • hair raising performance i love it, wow

  • After so many years, Yvonne Elliman still moves me to tears. Noone can top this version. I wonder what has become of her ...

  • For Jon, for times past...

  • Simply beautiful.

  • i snuck out of my house when i was 12 years old (!) to see a midnight showing of this movie. all i remember about that night is this song. as someone else mentioned, her voice is the most "pure" i've ever heard come across in a song. i'm still amazed at how good it sounds after all these years. awesome job yvonne!

  • She did justice to the songwriter and the song, which she sang with so much passion. I got carried away with her emotion. Just perfect!(^.^)

  • to me she has a perfect voice so pure and calm like an angel

  • I have heard so many singers destroy this song by over-cooking it. This is the way it should be done. Yvonne owns the song.

  • Agreed.

  • @ukbarton She supposed to be JC's girlfriend? No one can do this song better.

  • @ukbarton well said and timelessly correct. the years just make it more true. the helen reddy version is a "jack the ripper" version compared to elliman.

  • Absolutely superb performance from Yvonne. She's simply and truly wonderful.

  • Always loved this song.
