Actually it's not that bad engine. This one was overheated many times and never had any head failure since they're separate for each cylinder and (almost) impossible to crack.
However it chewed up camshaft and it's impossible to find new one.
I found out that jeep use these or did use these engines or a development of, in their cherokee, my neighbour has one, had it for ages with no problems.
I read a magazine with a 6 cylinder vm conversion in a rangerover, they made a 5 cylinder also.
@kerozin520 Camshafts should be the same for Range Rover VM 2.5, Rover SD1 2.4, Ford Scorpio VM Rover 800 2.5 VM as the engine type is HR492 (High Rev 4 cylinder 92mm bore) Must be some on eBay or try The VM Specialist in Chesterfield. (By the way these engines when brand new and crated cost about £5000) Try Rimmer Bros, they may have some cams. Good luck.
@tpvalley I totally disagree about these ENGINES overheating. This is not the engines fault but the fault of the installation. Bad installations were the early VM powered Range Rovers. The oil cooler was in the radiator so all the eggs were in one basket. Rover 800 is superb if the radiator is new and will actually tow better and faster than the Range Rover. Ford Scorpio VM was good. I must have done 50 to 100Ks on VM 2.5s and apart from the Rangie I've had no problems.

@techdavey1000
they did a ford scorpio VM?
That will shift, 220lbft ish, thats the same as a 5.7 v8 olds diesel!
The range rovers used to block engines cooling galleries I believe.
I do know the jeeps didnt seem to have problems as I said.
