Clearly this wasn't a fight over food as much as it was a fight for the lioness' to keep their cubs alive. They are focused on the fight and their cubs at this point, and clearly when it was 1 vs 1 before the 3rd one came in the lioness were getting the better of the hyenas. This was a great clip however, I wish more could be seen.

The only reason the Hyenas were so bold is because

1-The cubs were right there so the Lions have to take care of them first, which means the risk of giving up a kill to save them.

2-Looks like the Lionesses were pretty full anyway so it would be diffirent if they were hungry.

So yes, the ratio thing is probably correct. I've seen plenty of vids of 2 Lionesses owning 4-6 Hyenas. I've seen males take on an entire clan.

There are plenty of vids of hyenas chasing off lionesses, though always outnumbering them, but there are also plenty showing one big pride male running through 15 to 20 hyenas to kill the matriarch, with the rest of the clan doing very little about it..

Im sure that 3 to 5 Hyenas could kill a full grown male Lion if they had just a little more initiative. It takes a Lion a few minutes atleast to suffocate their victim, if two of the Hyenas began ripping at a male's stomach while he tried to do that he'd be dead quick. There is no hard fast ratio! A lot of people have come up with a 3-1 for a female and 5-1 for a male lion! That's all just bull! A full grown female hyena (females r larger than males) is not scared of a solitary lioness. Hyenas hunt more than they scavange.  They have incredible stamina. Lions and hyenas generally avoid one another if possible unless food is involved. Both will kill the other if the numbers are in their favor and to protect their territory..

No, the lionesses were winning this fight. You can see the hyenas backed off a little at the end. The lionesses probably left the kill to go out looking for their cubs who seem to have disappeaared.
