I already mentioned that as a territory an official language bill would not have the implication on PR as it would on a full blown State. being a Territory allows us to keep this autonomous national identity while benefiting from the economic and military security of the US.
Anyway, that's the humble opinion of this Half PR born in Vermont and raised in the backwoods of Western Massachusetts :-)
has no say in the matter since PR is not a state and thus not subject to the same norms that States are, we have a high degree of limited political autonomy in PR.
3) Culture and Identity. Even while democratically choosing to remain as part of the US as a territory, we have an independent identity in the world as PRs. We have our own Olympic and World Cup teams. Being a state would mean we lose this identity. Our athletes would have to compete for a place in the US team. Also...
decisions and set its own norms in a way States cannot. If a bill establishing English as an official language were passes, PR as a Commonwealth Territory would be under no pressure to conform. As a state we would be obligated (this is an irony for me to point out since I don't know Spanish). States cannot opt to allow residnce to not be US citizens but remain citizens of that state, a case in PR said that in PR you can do that, be a PR citzen wthout being a US citzen. & the US Supreme court...
I am Puerto Rican. Statehood would be bad for us for a number of reasons, a few of which I will list.
1) It would be the death of PRs economy. Currently PR is not subject to the norms the US economy and is more workable for lower income people. if we were a state we would be subject to these norms that would raise the cost and taxes of living but not income.
2) We have a high levelk of automy. While unable to vote in national elections, PS has a givernment elected in PR that can make its own...
America is a great place where many cultures meet, thus improving the American culture. It's awesome is we were to join in to improve their culture with our culture. Joining America helps it to become a better country, not an empire.
I don't know where the creator of this video is living ATM BUT let me ask this If you want to be a state so bad why not move to the US?
So folks say Hawaii hasn't lost any culture or identity?
Once you become a state there will be no more "Puerto Rican" people.. you are American all the way. The Flag with the lone star will be replaced with one that has 51 stars. So what do you think.. isn't that losing some sort of identity?
If you want that.. please reread my question and think about it.
@CrazyTacky FOR THAT REASON IT IS THAT WE COMPLETELY NEEDED TO BE OR PART OF THE USA BEEN OF THE UNION, WHEN THAT HAPPENS WILL BE THE STATE MAS PROSPER MORE THAN OR IS, BECAUSE IF HAWAII AND ALASKA ESTAN FAR AND ARE STATES WY NOT PR
Please accept my apology if I came off the wrong way.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
At the end of the day what I'm saying is that everyone involved in this needs to analyze the pros and cons of the three (status) choices inside out, upside down , right side up, backwards and forward x50.
Don't just say A is better because that's what he said.
@CrazyTacky no PROBLEM, APOLOGY ACCEPT and like u say",Everyone's entitled to their own opinion" that is absolutly correct ,,,, i am a puerto rican and that's why i wish some day not to far BEIING PART officially BECOME A STATE ,PUERTO RICAN CITIZEN WE HAVE A LOT OF ' limitations.' NOW, BECAUSE IS A territory
I don't like being considered a second class citizen
AS puertorican im supporting statehood ..all the way baby!. we shed to much blood for america are you kidding me if not puerto rico will be run by a bunch of drugdealers no food massive hunger on the iland its gunna suck! if they think south- america euro ect is going to care about puertorico lol your dreaming baby alittle tax is not kill anyone. please think hawaiians never lost no culture dam lol
That is not wrong, you are totally right pass the HR 2499 THEN ALL OF THIS PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO INFORMATION ABOUT IN THE POLLS WE WILL SHOW YOU THAT. THANKS YOU TO SHOW THE TRUTH
Puerto Ricans are so stupid , cant they just decide already . I think there just a bunch of free loaders and I hope pr becomes a state cuz what we have now is shit .
Wow! He's talking about the "Independistas" brainwashing the PR public. What about the people who are pro statehood? Look at Hawaii. Hawaii is a perfect example of what would happen to PR if the people chose the island to be a state. Heavy loss of culture, language and identity. The Puerto Ricans in PR would become poorer while the white American becomes more rich. Puerto Rico is all we have and to give that away to the U.S. only shows that Puerto Ricans are ignorant and careless.
@jabori1 Cool and open minded Puerto Rican guy from Los Angeles. Current student at California State University-Los Angeles and employee at a legal service company. I'm 22 btw not 23! You are living in USA, therefore you lost your credibility. Puerto rican statehood all the way.
Zacub, stop spreading lies. Statehood has never won any poll, it was always defeated. If you mean the last election, yes the corrupt party that support statehood (PNP) won with 53%, not 57%. Even if these corrupt and disgusting party have won before, they have never won any status poll. And yes they won with lies, and the current support for the governor lowered to 28%.. expect statehood to be kicked in the ass in the next poll.PNPgot like 40-50 convicts for corruption, being investigated again
48% is commonwealth and 46% is for statehood under a Democrat administration......Truth is the average Puerto Rican hates the American far right (myself included) and rightfully so. Republicans are greedy, selfish, anti health care reform, warmongering, callous, sanctimonious animals who will stop at nothing to exploit our good people from Puerto Rico. And I'm talking about REAL Puerto Ricans NOT Nuyoricans who are not really part of us.
LOL. I want Tibet to be free. because most Tibetans want to be free. I support PR statehood because most Puerto Ricans support statehood. according to the polls.
nope that is wrong. That is an old pole, intact I recognize those numbers. In one of the most recent poll. 57% support Statehood. This came after the election of Obama. Puerto Ricans realized that this isn't just the white peoples club.
Those who fear Puerto Ricans would lose their culture, whose to say that Puerto Rican's would be American-ized? Perhaps it would be Americans who are "Rican-ized"? I don't mean a total subversion either way, but a melding of cultures, much like any number of other cultural meetings in America.
I am not a Puerto RIcan, but I am a firm supporter of the Statehood movement. I am from Alabama,USA. I made a video highlighting Puerto Rico's struggle for statehood.
No u fucking ass, My parents voted for Obama, so Why don't u just shut the fuck up, just because you were wrong, you are taking it out on my home state. You are a racist
@zacubDon't pay attention to those ignorant indenpendentista their brain had been wash by Mexicans and other envious Latinos. Thanks for your support. Dont mind those idiots

@CrazyTacky wrong wil still call puerto rican after become a 51 state LET ME TELL U HOW IS IN FLORIDA CALL FLORIDIAN and PR PUERTO RICAN
cancr24 1 year ago
@cancr24 No.. we're talking about two different things.
Being a resident of a particular state (e.g. US state) is different than being of a particular nationality.
Some people mix it up like you do but it really isn't same.
Folks say that Puerto Ricans are US citizens.. yes it's true.. but with limitations.
I for one don't like being considered a second-class citizen.. but PR is a colony.

@cancr24 Prosperous for who, you?
Hawaii is a hot mess of a topic... look it up.. start with "The Apology Bill".
Puerto Ricans need to think more of themselves.. we need to stop relying on other people to bail us out.
I for one make my own living.. I don't need my "daddy" to bail me out of anything... if I can do it anyone can :D
We are better then food stamps and welfare hand outs.. you should realize this too.
