They questioned the Church quite often and sought to prove/disprove preconceptions about laws of the universe (ex. the earth being the center of everything) through science, experimentation, and reasoning. However, they were persecuted by the church until the group faded away.

I'm pretty sure i got some of that wrong and left out a lot of details, so you should google them to find out.

You also have to know that they surfaced during a time were questioning the church in any way was considered very seditious and not many went against them. Often it led to harsh punishment or exile.

At any rate, I didn't see any references to the Illuminati in the lyrics; they likely just wanted to make a kickass song, and succeeded
