  • Pennsylvania's finest.

  • Bill Burkette is totally my great uncle! His build reminds me so much of my father's. It's crazy. My father moved to the west but all of our family is still back in Pennsylvania.

  • I love this song! It cheers me right up and I'm addicted to it. I can't stop listening to this great tune. :)

  • WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!!!

I grew up in a small town with only 2 raduio stations, one of which was an oldies station..this makes me smile like nothing else!! THANK YOU!

  • i love the vogues

  • Great song. It starts at :20

  • working class anthem

  • They are performing at the Mt. Pleasant Glass Festival tonite. Can't wait to hear them and say hi again with Mom and Aunt Peggy. Woohoo!!!

  • Why can't they produce sound that's anything like this now days? I'm only 20 and I can't stand this new age... devil music. Smack my bitch up? That's just wrong. COME ON, BANDS!

  • You are my hero. We must talk. NOW.

  • Are you kidding? Come on, he who is wet behind the ears. The prodigy song you reference is about using drugs mainly cocaine not hitting a woman.

  • understood

  • a .45rmp. welcome to the stone age of the stone ae. i love records though. thanks for posting the song.

  • does anyone have the original recordings, special angel and turn around look at me by the vogues??? HELP......

  • brilliant song.

  • awsome

  • This is a great song but my favorite by them is "Moments To Remember". The harmony on it is overwhelming.

  • Influenced by Sam Cooke's Chain Gang.

  • I've always heard touches of "Greenback Dollar" as well as "Chain Gang" in this song.

  • Yeah you are right. Very original sound despite influences. Maybe The Lion Sleeps to Tonight too? Well as I said once on this site their best of contained 2 great songs and then a lot of bad religious songs. I was disappointed and lost my religion .. now I am an Atheist thanks to them!

  • CONT Of and I forgot Magic Town (remembered You're the one) though the greatest hits may not have had Magic Town or a few other good songs they had.

  • nice vid there jimmy. good song and from the vid itself, a good vid to follow it too.

    keep up the good work!

  • All the blood has rushed to my tingly parts!

  • Just a great song. Unfortunately their hits were limited because too many of their recordings had religious overtones.

  • Thanks for posting, love the classic tunes of yesteryear, not like the garbage produced today!

  • The Vogues didn't have the body of work as the Beatles or Stones. Nonetheless, this song is as good as any from the era.

  • I heard this sound on the way home from work Friday morning and it just fit!! I haven;t heard it in probably at least twenty years, but the instant it came on it was like it was right there all the time.

Check out the face in chucks(?) shoulder at about 1:01.

  • This is a good song. I like the old songs!

Christ the savior Cathderal in Moscow has been rebuilt!

Haigha sophia In constantinople(istanbul) andSts.Constantine & Helen(on Stoney Island Ave) in Chicgao will be Christian again soon!

    It's Constantinople NOT Istanbul!

    It's Smyrna NOT Izmir!

    It's Stpetersburg(or petrograd) NOT Lenningrad!

    Glory to God forever!

Glory to God for all things!

  • Great songs! I feel right at home at a skating rink or a penny arcade as long as I hear this!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG SO SO MUCH

  • I absolutely LOVE this song!

  • songs sung like this, well best bet for a trip to the back seat of (my now husbands of 39 years) 61 chevrolet

  • good song, says alot for the time.

  • Great song, wish someone could make songs like this today!

  • "....cause everytime my baby smiles at me, I that it's all worthwhile, yea..."

    Thanks for posting.

  • the vogues had this big hit not Jay and the

americans...It was played as Drew Carey

    theme song...great...........

  • I had previously only heard this song by Jay and The Americans, but I like this version too. It reminds me of Sixties' summers (which did seem to be the best) probably because I was a teenager. The American charts had some classics which never found their way over here.

  • Isn't that the Theme Song Of The Drew Carey Show.

  • I absolutely love this song! Brings back great memories!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I listen to this song everyday.

  • God they were sexy...now who do we have to look at?

  • 4260laurel: Ozzie Osbourne...Gene Simmons...Clay Aiken...the sorry list goes on.

  • Hiya 4260laurel

Michael Jackson? Some people tried to persuade me into the idea that the poor dead guy was "the king". I only see a disturbed man with a severe body dysmorphic disorder. Sorry for being a bit sarcastic.

Who do we have to look at now? I dont know. The real pretty onces are all ancient dinosaurs by now

  • Lo cierto es que si, pero no quitemos valor a los artistas, en su momento fue una revolucion quizas despues solo fue un pequeño disturvio, no creo que su musica vaya mas alla, requiem in pax

  • valenciacac

Thank you for commenting. But I have no idea what you are talking about. Apart from your dramatic Latin "rest in peace".

    Next time try English.

  • Thank you for commenting.

    I Think like you.

Next time try a translation software.

    R.I.P. Dramatic?

    Tu siempre seguro servidor.

    Jose.

  • valenciacac,

    Thank you for replying.

Excuse me, do you or do I need translation software?

Beste Jose, je lijkt mij een hele leuke vent, en ik vermoed dat ik je mening wel degelijk kan waarderen, als ik 'm enigszins kan verstaan. (And this was my reaction to you in my native language).

Next time try translation software dear. ;-)

  • Vitiligo is a relatively common chronic disorder that causes depigmentation in patches of skin. You people who make fun of him will get something that makes you look nasty too someday

  • Hi SupaPhuntyme

As I understood, vitiligo makes your skin spotted, makes you look like a Dalmatian. But it doesnt transform a nice good-looking young Afro American lad with a beautiful voice, into a white dancing skeleton face. With the help of criminal plastic surgeons with only dollars in their eyes. Body dysmorphic disorder is a goldmine for cosmetic surgeons.

I will never make fun of the lonely bloke Michael Jackson.

And that Im not a fan of his music: Shoot me.

  • Franz Ferdinand?

  • A buncha d-bags wearing ladies makeup pretending to sing

  • I have always dug this song . But as a lad , who was just taking up the drums , never noticed that the drummer's tempo is all over the place . Lousy time !

  • hes just lured to the melody... I mean who ever wrote the standard for this stuff.. maybe I have no idea what im saying

  • SuperPhunThyme9: "maybe I have no idea what im [sic] saying." Well, you're right about that. No argument here.

  • Don't worry, I'm sure there's some Rush or Dave Matthews you can find here on youtube.

  • I graduated from Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs, California in 1965. I couldn't count the number of times this was played at our parties during the rest of the 1960's. Just a wonderful time to be young & alive and a wonderful song from that era.

  • Amen. Our progeny don't get it. But that may be our fault.

  • Ahh, but our progeny's progeny can.

  • gerkins1: Yes--if there's a progeny+ left to "get it." The way things are going, President "yes we can" and the danger-mongers in North Korea, Iran, China, et. al., may leave our progeny with not a helluva lot. We gotta stand and defend the legacy.

  • Jesus. Get heavy won't you. Way to bring down the party.

  • Well, the mainstream never gets quality but I guarantee all of my friends dig this.

  • great song

  • I wasn't born yet, but this song is awesome, and I just love 60s music. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Thank you for posting it, lot of good pics

  • This was great song I was in 8th grade in 1965, and well remember this hit. I enjoyed bands like this, in addition to british invasion bands, acid rock, and psychedelic. this period will never be repeated.

  • Nice job.

  • I was born in 1965; good year for music, if this gem is any indication.

  • A great year, indeed, but I won't tell you when I was born, LOL.

  • Catchy song, thanks for posting.

  • Thank you so much for posting. Makes me think of when I was about 4 or 5, living in East Dallas. Kind of a haunting song for me for some reason.

  • Classic 60's when music was music.

  • awesome song

  • Oh yeah you can´t sit still to this type of music even the jodeling kicks ass! :-)

  • Great song, lots of memories

  • are all song from the 60s short?

i mean less than 3 mins?

  • mostly. I think it came from the length of track you could get onto a 10 inch 78 rpm disc. Radio made it the accepted length for a pop record and even when 45 rpm discs could hold longer tracks the feeling was that radio stations would not play them if they were much longer than 3 minutes so the format stayed.

  • The much more music top 40 stations that came along in the 60's 70's loved the 2:30 records. Why play one 5 minute record when you could play two songs that ran 2:30. How many times did you hear the long version of Light My Fire on the radio in 1967?

  • It hasn't gotten any better. I don't think i've EVER heard the long version of Light My Fire on the radio. When i was a kid, I thought the truncated version was the only version. When I finally heard the album version I was like...where the hell did this organ solo come from?!?

  • DItto...I only found out Light my Fire had a long version when I downloaded it...and I <3 this song...thank god my mom always listened to Oldies when I was young :D

  • Jose Felliciano (sp) covered it, and I think it was shorter, but you're right. The Doors' longer take wasn't played on Top 40.

  • I've heard the long version the long version, though not in 1967(I was not even born yet).

  • Also, i believe at the time coffee bar owners had clout too.

They wanted the records to be short so that the kids would put more money into the juke box!

  • Yeah, alot of them were, in order to get airplay they needed to be short. Long songs didn't get played much. Some kind of unspoken rule back then. You know, the Beatle's first concert at Shea Stadium was a huge sucess, but was only 35 minutes long. Can you imagine going to a concert nowdays, paying $100, and it's over in 35 min?

  • minkymott: Education for ya: There were any number of set-up bands that performed before the main attraction, almost the same as a boxing match, with an endless undercard. Hence, many B-list bands are able to truthfully claim they performed with the Beatles on the same stage and rose to stardom on their coat-tails, though many were well established. while the Beatles were rising.

At Shea, the fan "adulation" was so severe, they were all but hustled out before crowd control broke down.

  • Waldocounty...what the HELL are you talking about in your first paragraph? I made a reference to short songs being popular and short concerts being the norm. And how today those short concerts would never work. You ok? Here's some education for you bud, stick to the topic, makes it easier for people to understand what you're talking about.

  • any who cares? the eatles weren't the be all and end all....there were many terrific groups...and this was one...and the vogues and the toys and the letterman...See?

  • here is a nice clean cut group of boys. Nice shirts etc. Then comes the Beatles with their long hair and guitars. Thank God for the Beatles

  • Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles but there's something inherently sexy about songs from this era of clean cut gents.

  • I'm probably the only 15-year-old who likes, let alone knows this song

Everyone in the Bay Area just seems to like rap now

I'm glad my dad always plays his 60s songs

  • your not, because I do to

  • Good for you. It was a better world back then. When I was 16, I worked as a labourer in the East Coast. At the end of the day, I always thought of this song...going home to my girlfriend and Mum's cooking. Good luck, take care.

  • this is what I sing around 4.45 every weekday...love that 5 O'clock!!!!

  • awesome song!!!

  • Gosh I am listening to this very song as my 23 yr old son plays his LP of this very same song!! Gotta love it!! BluRoses28711~!!!

  • Kids these days listen to that junk rap music

  • not everyone ;) i'm 17, love oldies and despite the most "music" of today.

  • Im 13 and i hate rap. My fav band is Queen my second fav is The Beatles

  • As you get a little older (more "mature"), try the Zombies, then the Kinks.

  • Comment removed

  • It's funny because kids in those days were listening to what the older generation called junk but are now considered classics.

    Funny stuff. :)

  • A very moving song. It is one of my favorites. Thank you, Jimmy.

  • my 23 yr old son bought a record player just this week..there is nothing better than to hear these sogs on it!!!

  • a record player? omgs I'm jealous...i want one.

    I love this song :]

  • Beatiful.

  • The Vogues were one of the greatest bands to ever come out of the Pittsburgh area, which was also the stomping grounds of the great Lou Christie.

  • It doesn't matter what era you were born in, if you're old enough to work, you can certainly relate to this song.

These guys were gone, long before I was born but they're one of my favorite groups of all time. Amazing vocals, incredible talent, and catchy hooks. The Vogues are legendary!

  • my fave song of all time!

  • yeah! ty

  • yea! back to the 60's! i love it! i remember hitchin-a-ride! havn't heard that in ages either!

  • I am pretty sure "Hichin' A Ride" by Vanity Fare can be found on YouTube also.

  • I am pretty sure "Hitchin A Ride" by Vanity Fare can be found on YouTube also.

  • Shame that the lawyer-sharks forced off YouTube the iconic "Hullaballoo" segment from 1965 of The Vogues performing their big hit, even if it was lip-synched. We all respect copyright, but c'mon. Why are you so tightly wound?

Lawyers got paid, performers weren't, legacy denied the chance to enjoy, Vogues fade into oblivion.

Lawyer-sharks, hope you're satisfied and your checks cleared. Now on to the next courtroom drama to steal candy from babies, yes? Big paychecks happening?

  • I agree 100%, that Hullabaloo version was a classic!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whoa, buddy. Look at that suit at the 44 second mark - later worn by Herb Tarlick on WKRP.

  • this is a real voices

  • this song is way too hot for words haha im 14&black and still dance to this shhhhh

  • It's simply a good song, what does being black have to do with anything?

  • I'm 1/4 black and I don't go around making it clear that I am. It's stupid, niggers like you give black people a bad name.

  • This is a great record, and sums up the mood of the young at the time. One my all time favourites.

Nobody wanted to conform, and be just the same as their parents had been.

Curious then that the boys in the band look so straight and un-hip in their publicity photos. ;-)

    Why was this?

  • I love this song. The chorus is amazing. Thanks for sharing!

  • paulwho1961 has hitchin a ride. it's still there. 64citykid.

  • --why was the original clip for this Vogues song removed from YouTube?? all that's left here are pictures and records spinning round and round. now i'm depressed. 64citykid.

  • I appreciate this video, but I too was sad and angry that the original video is yet another "unavailable" victim :~(

  • looks like WB, Turner Broadcasting, and EMI have become the youtube lynch-mob. i hope they're happy now. 64citykid.

  • I am so damn frustrated that the media companies are going on a YouTube purge. Albeit, I think they have figured out how people are using YouTube to listen to music; consequently, they are trying to keep people from doing so so they have to buy their records. Unfortunately, before we know it, this video will probably be gone soon, too; I commented on a YT video of a song twelve hours after it was posted. When I checked on it again about eight hours later, it was removed by Warner Music Group.

  • --frustrated?? that will make two of us. last night my own channel was purged by FOX. [i deleted at least 7 dead videos from this site]. i think you are right--these spinning targets and those who post them are the next to go. it's sad, really.

    64citykid.

  • I know what you mean. A great number of my videos here have been made unavailable. This keeps on; I will just go to Limewire for my music.

  • That's unfortunate.

  • I was looking for the original clip as well - what happened to it? Some copyright problem? Does anyone know? Rats!

  • the original B&W clip of 5 o'clock world

--[the group standing in front of a big gear machine]--was apparently removed by the user because of WB, Time/Warner, and FOX's efforts to crack down on illegal usage of any copyrighted material. [many accounts were suspended due to this operation]. youtube is filled with hidden landmines. tread lightly, my friend. 64citykid

  • the clip can be seen on the vocal hall of fame web site. great clip!

  • it would be nice to see the album meet the vogues on cd(especially the stereo album)

  • drew carry !!! love this one ,

  • its good to have more than one video of a song because others can disapear and this one has nice pictures
