this music must have come partly from india at least there is a strong resemblance especially in the way the drums is played. the timing is a generic 6/8 beat which can be found throughout the sahel zone eventually reaching yemen and then going further to iran and india. The weird thing though is that the 6/8 timing isnt very prominent in other eastern arab countries like egypt or libanon.

@mdinka just because two cultures have 6/8 rhythms does not mean that their music is especially related. it does not take much time to create many different types of rhythms when you are bored and have nothing to do but sit around and bang on a tabl. 6/8 rhythms exist all over the place but it's not like no one could ever create a simple 6/8 without learning it from someone.

@glorplaxy of course you are right It could be just a coincidence but I observed many more similarities between the cultures I mentioned below. it's not only the rhythmic patterns or the pentatonic scale it's also the dancing and singing (especially the singing) . And I'm thinking here about very very old ties like way before biblical times. I can't prove it though it is just a gut feeling. @dnicholsoncole Well first of all. Im an european married into an sahrawi family and I live on the border to west sahara. (All my thoughts to them). And no one in our family or me is forced to wear melhfa, as the traditional piece of clothing for women is called. And I wear it everyday. The only thing I can say is that in the 45 celsius heat then melhfa is more comfortable than an abaya or tight skirt with matching top. An pale colored melhfa (chigga) is perfect for the summer weather.
