I have a question for you . To get the the lower board , the audio input selector board PS04 . I need to change a cap 823 2200UF16V . I was hearing from a guy on the website audiokarma . that This cap is for VL 5V supply circuit . That why My Receiver wont turn on right . He said its a bear to just get to that cap on that board . email me back for a response . I posted once before , but you were unsure if my receiver was broke .
@ducklandwikeno You have to remove the back panel, and the screws at the corners of the stacked horizontal boards. The boards can sort of flip up like you see in the video. Don't trust what the other guy said though. You really need to do your own troubleshooting. It would be a shame to go to all the trouble of replacing that cap and find out that it was not your problem after all.
@ducklandwikeno The receiver malfunctioned again after about a year. Originally I had lifted the ground leg of the regulator and added a diode to get .6 volt more. Worked OK, but it turns out there was a funky 10uf cap at the output of the regulator, and it was OSCILLATING with a waveform visible at it's output on a scope. Replaced the cap, removed my diode mod, and the reset is now perfect, and the regulator output also. (November 2011)
How much would the repair have cost if it was simply the bad IC not giving out the right amount of voltage to power up the receiver? I'm having the same problem and am curious how much they're going to charge me. Should I hold onto this unit once it's fixed or are these not very reliable?
@PsychPresentations When you say "same problem" do you mean the small relay clicking or totally dead? In my case it still would be up to 300.00 or so because of the troubleshooting and major dissassembly. Don't forget the molex connectors on the amp module MUST be resoldered, that's a big job, and the backup cap is most always bad - that's about 40.00 with freight for the part and again major labor to replace. Even still it's a great receiver and worth fixing unless you "GOTTA" have HDMI.
@mdzacharias wow! Thanks for the fast reply, much appreciated. I mean the relay clicking. And 300.00 total for parts and resoldering of molex connectors and replacement of the backup cap? Additionally, what makes the backup cap so costly? Excellent channel and video by the way.
@PsychPresentations I know it seems like a LOT to fix this thing, but they are just big, monstrous receivers that take hours and more hours to troubleshoot and fix. Just the dis-assembly alone is a really big deal, and there are two or three separate major dis-assemblies involved here. The backup is special, available only from Marantz, and it costs me somewhere around 30.00 plus - it's been a while so I don't remember exactly. Then there's unpacking, repacking, UPS charges, etc. It's a big deal.
also I want to point out if i try to power it on from the remote control the receiver will go dead . The stand by light will also go dead too . This was not the way it should work . After Marantz it worked fine . But after 6 months or so I experienced the problem lIke Im explaining to you . So I think it back to the repair shop when I have the money to fix it . I will spend the money on , this receiver sound great too me .
well I can turn it off from the remote fine but . If I first power it up and push the main power button it will not turn on right , But it I turn the Function Knob and press the main power button two time it comes on fine and plays . I had the main power supply fixed a year ago my marantz not under warranty . I think it got the same problem again with the main power supply not working right .
Hi my receiver is the same model the marantz SR-18EX . I had a problem in the past that the receiver would not power on . I had it fix by marantz . Now I am having a problem with the receiver when you press the Power button it wont power on from stand by . If I turn the video selector knob and press the power button it powers on . Do you have any info on what may cause this problem . If I send it to marantz there going to charge me 50.00 just to look at it .
@ducklandwikeno The SR-18EX does not have a standby power button - no way I know of to turn it off except by hard power switch or remote. You mean you can't turn it on by the main power switch until you turn a function knob? I would say try turning it off with the remote and see if it functions normally after that. I'm not sure your receiver is really broken.
BY THE WAY. The reason these blow up is bad solder connections at the molex connectors at the top of the amp stack. Don't forget to resolder them if you should happen to work on one of these.
Although I AM the "Multimeter Junkie" and I like a good analog multimeter, a repair like this makes a strong case for using a good digital meter at least in some cases. I'm not at all sure I would have caught the critical output of the 6v regulator being several tenths of a volt low had I been using an analog meter.
