I don't know what you guys have against James Labrie... he has such an unique voice, I can't see Dream Theater with anyone else singing in their songs.

I agree he used to be much better at higher notes, but he still have a clear heavenly voice that, I believe, sounds good. And he's also doing his best to chant in a more metal way, at which he is good enough, without being Russel Allen.

Maybe you don't like it at the beginning of the singing it is because there is vocal distortion added.

its true. but it sounds like its because there is alot of hesitation in that intro in general due to the tempo being set a little too slow by what sounds like the guitars. then after that mike attempts to bring the tempo back up when the drums start building.
