Imagine the things Otto Dix saw to put all this in his head! This one at 3:57 has the biggest impact on me. I saw it when I was 16. Those men are alive (so to speak) surrounded by dead bodies, mud and stagnant water. Not allowed to retreat and knowing they will likely be killed by artillery the next day.
War is hell? An understatement if such a thing is possible.
Incredible arsenal of techniques - far greater than Goya's! The subject matter too - his relating of sex, ugly or not to war psychology, is epoch-breaking: far in advance of Viet Nam or Iraq today! Revolution & Hyperinflation, nightmare psychology, torture, etc. are never mentioned in these "gallery Line-Notes". They should be - help prepare us for what is developing today! It won't be sweetie middle-class "correctness protocols"!
I think his paintings go far beyond what is easily understood. There is certainly a part of war where everything becomes so insane from streams of gore, constant shelling, and lack of proper food that your mind goes blank and horror freezes in time. Otto Dix vididly expresses pure horror.
Also, Dix actually fought in two wars. He was a Volksturm conscript in WWII, and he made more paintings afterwards which are even less well-known.
Otto Dix is one of my favorite painters. It's hard for me to find people who are familiar with him and his work. Why didn't you include the "Der Krieg" triptych in this montage? I didn't see it. I would venture to call it his masterpiece.
Dix is the only painter I can think of who has captured so eloquently the gruesomeness of war and its psychological after-effects. His work is very easy to understand but far from simple.
Did dix paint the picture of a kokaine addict-poet jumping to his death. In any event, does anybody know the painting I am referring to and what the title of it is?
I'm pretty sure that's from a triptych (sp) he painted. He did a couple of them after he got back from the front in WWI. I might not be right though, that's just off the top of my head.
schade, dass das beste kriegsbild überhaupt - "der schützengraben" - vernichtet wurde...

Otto Dix's art is certainly macabre yet gripping. Certainly one of the best artists ever.

It's beautiful in dark way which isn't really beauty at all, more in that; though it isn't pleasant you want to see it because it intrigues you.

Brilliant set of pictures by the master Dix...
Nevertheless I was missing his triptych "war" in the video. Just search for "Dix war" on google / images. Outstanding piece of art, too.

Por cierto (y debo admitir las comparaciones son odiosas), la fuerza de estas imágenes no tienen comparación.
