I was impressed Kelly Clarkson when i wasn't familiar with the song but this classic song, known by everyone, showed she doesn't know how to interpret it. She faked black singing and didn't have any sense of direction in the song, nor the spirit. Poor job

She's angry at this person and doesn't want to see him again but at the same time still can't get him and the pain of the break-up. It's something she obviously doesn't shy away from in her own music. Similar emotions and themes are particularly present in Behind These Hazel Eyes.

Kelly is the only AI contestant to show confidence and deliver a performance with such star presence.from the way she moves & glides on stage, to her facial expressions, and how she interacts with the audience. from day 1 she already acted like a star, proving she was a PRO. all other contestants that i seen, til this day perform on the show like AMATURES, not knowing what to do or stand on stage, or have blank expressions. She was so confident. every other winner never performed like this!!!
and i believe kellys choice for changing the song to "walk on by" was a GREAT decision..the other song wasnt as soulful, this is amazing!! Kelly knows whats best for her, and it totally worked! she nailed this song, she needs to sing it concert like she did with "stuff like that there"
idk what was wrong with Paula & Randy, but this is my favorite american idol performance of Kelly.. its so soulful and she showcased her voice so well! she made it her own and sounded so beautiful!! so powerful and great control. she is even better nowadays, but damn this is one amazing performance. the original doesnt even sound like this, she makes every cover sound even better, she puts her own style into it.... Randy must have been high to say "it wasnt your greatest", she needed more credit
What a gift her friends gave to the world when they made sure she auditioned for AI. If we had missed out on her talent, the world would be a much less richly adorned place. Go Kelly!!!! Keep making the music that gives us that great pleasure.
i maybe in the minority... but this is my favorite performance of kelly during her run on idol, only maybe because i did not watch her season. i only saw her performances on you tube though i bought the dvd of 1st season.. this performance gives me chills because it has so much soul! and she looks so lovely here!!! love you kelly and will forever support you and your music......

(Pt 2) Even in this abbreviated performance Kelly outdid even Dionne and so I truly believe Randy needed to give her more credit. She was right to change her song choice to this one. The first choice wouldn't have gone this far. This truly is pure Kelly. She made it her own. And everything she sings is her best!
Like she said song choice is so key. Listening to Anyone Who Had A Heart by both Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick I mean that's a great song and I know Burt Bacharach loves it as one of his favorites he ever wrote, but it just never had the smash hit power that Walk On By had and still does.
What I find even more amazing is that she had two record companies offer her contracts and she turned them down because she didn't want to be packaged. For a starving artist at the time it is amazing to have intergrity. Unreal really.
Great version of this classic Burt Bacharach & Hal David tune. With hope this will get the younger generation to listen to the classic tunes that Dionne Warwick recorded, and while they're at it maybe they'll get hip to the bossa nova classics as well.

She doesn't understand anything about subtlety. She keeps adding notes that aren't in the melody, and it just gets rid of the hook. Dionne Warwick did it better, so did Aretha, so did Dusty springfield, and even Laura Nyro (great composer, not so great singer) gave the lyrics better phrasing. I'm going to punch my sister for making me listen to this.
This is just entirely over-the-top. She doesn't try to do anything for the SONG, just show off how loud and long she can hit her notes.

She should have sung this straight - for me it was too up tempo and flew past, when she could have spent longer and taken her time and got into the regret of the song. Don't get me wrong I love this girl to death and think she's the best there is, but I'm glad Randy said just what I was thinking; it didn't do much for me despite being brilliant because the girl never actually sings a bad song..you just get to compare with what you know she CAN do
I think she spend it up because of the time constraint given on each song. I watched a recent performance of Stuff Like That There and it was slowed down a bit which leads me to believe that this was purposely sped up for the sake of making sure she is within the time restrictions and what not.

I happen to like Kelly Clarkson's voice. I just think she ruined the song. However, I thought her best performance on American Idol was when she sang Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" She did a great job.
I actually like this performance...almost more so than any other she gave that season. I'm not sure why, something about it stands out in my mind. I think it's the trilling. She kind of ran the show after it got into the final five...Wonder who would win if you were to pit all 7 idol winners in a competition against each other??? Who would win?
It's a lose-lose situation, really. If she deviates too much, people are going to hate on it. If she tries to emulate it, then they say she's trying too hard.

That's only cuz she's in like massive amounts of pain.
season one she was literally having seizures backstage in the make up chair cuz of neck pain and wasn't tellin anyone about it.
She's not drunk or high. She's just naturally random.
Back then she was just like tryin to sit there and wait for it to be over cuz she was hurting.
Now she's better and being herself instead of having to grin and bear it as much.
She's supposed to be dancing and fun! It's good. Predictability is stupid.

the song is a beautiful classic, unfortunately I don't feel she got this song; it was supposed to be sung delicately and in a very different way, not shouted from the bottom of the lungs

I happen to like Kelly Clarkson's voice. I just think she ruined the song. However, I thought her best performance on American Idol was when she sang Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" She did a great job.

I actually like this performance...almost more so than any other she gave that season. I'm not sure why, something about it stands out in my mind. I think it's the trilling. She kind of ran the show after it got into the final five...Wonder who would win if you were to pit all 7 idol winners in a competition against each other??? Who would win?
