Dan Kelly was a great announcer, But as a Blackhawk fan Lloyd Pettit was every bit as good. You will never have the excitement again of the late sixties, early seventies hockey. That's when hockey was played by great teams and players.
The talented Chicago teams of the late 60s and early 70s rarely played as a team, like the more disciplined and better-coached teams in Boston, Montreal and New York. Billy Reay was a great man, but wasn't able to get his tremendously talented rosters to sacrifice individuality for the team, and he also couldn't figure out how to park his biggest man on Phil Esposito's butt in this series!
I remember that serieas very well. Phil Esposito had a big hard on to beat the Blackhawks who a few years earlier had traded him to Boston with Fred Stanfield, and Ken Hodge shortly after Orr came to Boston. It was a trip to see a Hawks home game on TV in Chicago. Also if I can remember right, this was teh last season the home teams wore dark jerseys, and white on the road which of course currently they've switched back to the way it was in this clip...
Bobby Orr should be a text study at every Hockey, Baseball, Football and Basketball team training camps. All athletes can learn something from number 4, be it courage, discipline, talent, never-say-die, never give up, etc. I remember reading Larry Bird looking up at the rafters and seeing Orr's number 4 up there for insipiration. And Bird was a basketball player. There you have it, inspiration. Every athelete needs it. No matter what.
No, NBC didn't start NHL broadcasts until 1972. This was a CBS broadcast, I know because I saw it (one of the very rare instances of Arthur M Wirtz lifting the home game blackout).
It was Pat Egan, a former Bruin, who was just awful. He was only 52, sounded like Grandpa Jones, rarely said anything, and what little he said was basically useless.
Hawks goal, coming back from the break about 10 seconds late.
Watching the game as a kid, with the Bruins up 6-2, the Hawks scored a late goal. I heard the crowd roaring, but the goal was missed, and no replays were available.
Game 1 was the also the trigger for a rule change. Every time the Hawks were pressuring, Cheevers flipped the puck over the glass, putting the fans in a foul mood. Next season, goalies were penalized for delay of game...
Orr was the best. Darryl Sittler and Guy Lafleur, great players in their own right, played against both Orr and Gretzky - and both men have said that Orr was better.
This is what makes Bobby Orr the greatest hockey player of all time. Sure, Gretzky's numbers were better, but he was a one-way, non-physical player. Not only does Orr score, get a few assists, and make dazzling end to end rushes, he also played great defense. Look at how many shots he blocked! Can you imagine, in your wildest dreams, Gretzky or Lemieux throwing themselves in front of a Bobby Hull slapshot? No way! Orr was the ultimate hockey player.
Fearless -- and brilliant! Players today, even with the advanced padding don't "risk" themselves like that. As you say, Mr. Bleeney, Bobby Orr did this consistently, and didn't know any other way. No one was ever a better or more complete player -- not even close -- BRAVO!!!!
@Bleeney, 85highlander, I couldn't have said it better. People sometimes forget what a great defencive defenceman Bobby Orr was. They see him unbelievable offensive rushes and wonder how could he have been a great defenceman. In case you don't know folks, he was. Cheever's said he should give Orr half his pay for the shots he's blocked/save for him. Truely Gods masterpiece of hockey, Robert (Bobby) Gordon Orr!

He was good yet he won't ever compare to the greats of the Montreal Canadiens. And they lived happily ever after. The End.

This may have been Game 1, which was on a Sunday afternoon and on CBS-TV.
These clips may have been from a sports segment in a TV newscast in Boston or Chicago later that day.

THe Boston announcer was Don Earle.

A trivia question to try on your friends:
Who was the Bruins analyst along side Earle
that season ??
It was Pat Egan, a former Bruin, who was just awful. He was only 52, sounded like Grandpa Jones, rarely said anything, and what little he said was basically useless.
In this clip, we actually heard him, no small
feat !!
He was replaced the next season by Johnny
Pierson, who was excellent over a 20 year run...
